I love dudes. Straight up, dudes are amazing with their tallness and deep voices and facial hair and whatnot. I even like their ability to eat astounding amounts of food and their random, dorky humor. There are so many awesome things about guys that girls in general just don’t have.

However, there are some things that girls have that guys should just stay away from. These things mostly exist in the realm of fashion (and make-up, but we won’t go there because dudes should not wear make-up, period. We’re talking to you, Adam Lambert). Here is the list of the most heinous fashion crimes committed by the male population.

And sometimes it’s damn near impossible to work their Hollywood looks into our not-so-Hollywood lives. I’ve made it my mission to tap into the mind of a fashion stylist and show you how to take your style inspiration – whatever it may be – and make it more you!

Sometimes in this (awesome) summer heat, the last thing on our minds isn’t what else we can add to an outfit to showcase our style, but how many layers we can remove without flashing too much skin or, worse, a nipple. And if I had to name one person who balances this all out perfectly, it’s Sanoe Lake.

Not familiar with her? Well, this part-surfer part-actress is part-Japanese, part-English and part-Hawaiian, the perfect combo for her breakout role in Blue Crush. (Which, like to admit it or not, you know you stop to watch when it’s on TNT on a Saturday.) In the movie, you don’t get to see much of Sanoe’s style as she’s either wearing a hotel maid uniform or rocking her bathing suits (and the occasional board-short).  But off the movie set, Sanoe takes her cool, laid-back surfer style with her, which makes for some pretty gnarly (in a good way) style. She’s a surfer girl from the waves to the street, and she does it well.

Sanoe’s style isn’t cool because she cares about all things fashion, but because she doesn’t.  Her main focus is on the water and what she wears is just an afterthought. Still, she pulls together a look that is cool, chill and a total fashion inspiration to anyone who sees her. The fact that she can do that without even trying? Well, that makes her an under-the-radar fashion icon.

Sunglasses, Hair Wrap, Shorts, Rope Bracelet, Wood Bracelets, Shirt, Shoes, Swimsuit

The key to getting Sanoe’s look is to make it seem like you’re not trying to get Sanoe’s look. I know, it’s backwards, but the whole “I don’t care” vibe is what makes or breaks this look. To start, you need a swimsuit. You can’t be a surfer girl without one and, well, it’s essential under that gorgeous crochet tank that screams summer goddess. Pair those with the frayed shorts for the “I don’t care if they’re torn, get me to the beach” look and some casual gladiator sandals (because comfort is key for this style).

As for accessories, think bohemian meets city girl. Mix chunky and sparkly bracelets (city) with more natural braided ones (bohemian). Big sunglasses add a hint of diva, but the printed head scarf is very beachy. (Not to mention, both pieces double as protection from harsh sun rays and add total badassness). Put it all together and you’ve got a flawless summer look.

Pink and silver is such a cute combo for summer. There’s something about the silver that just jazzes everything up. I’m loving this look over a cute swimsuit for a day at the beach, or for fro yo and window shopping on a sunny Saturday afternoon.

Floral Dress
Love the vintage feel with the Forever 21 price tag! And thanks to that gorgeous print, you don’t need much to accessorize; sandals, a fun bag and some vintage sunglasses will do. This look is perfect for a Sunday brunch outside. Nothing says summer more than pancakes, iced coffee, a porch and a fabulous yet comfy sundress.

Strapless Dress

TOGA! TOGA! TOGA!

Who or what inspires your style? Many of us use movie characters (like Adriana La Cerva) or celebrities (like Khloe Kardashian) as style inspiration, even though, most of the time, they are being dressed from head to toe by the best stylists. Which we don’t have. And sometimes it’s damn near impossible to work their Hollywood looks into our not-so-Hollywood lives. So, you may not know this, but I’m a teensy obsessed with world history.  The fact that I’d rather watch a movie like “300″ over a movie like “Legally Blonde” makes it’s safe to say that I am a history nerd raised to the 10th power.  But while the battles and the coups and the whole mummy thing interests me, what really gets me riled up is what everyone was wearing.

Many of us have a mental image (based on movies) of what ancient Greeks, Romans and Egyptians wore. Beautiful and sexy yet simple things, like long white robes, gladiator sandals, gold accessories and olive branches in the hair. The “style” was ethereal and stunning – it’s no wonder so many of today’s trends are based on that ancient look.

And it’s no wonder I am so obsessed with all things toga-inspired. Most likely a result of my 200th viewing of the bloody, thrilling action film, “300.”

For those who have yet to see “300″ (here at Michigan State it’s like an unwritten rule before even being offered admission), Queen Gorgo is the wife of King Leonidas (also known as the guy who likes to scream and kick people into giant holes in the ground).  Her style is very simple and typical of the time. She commands power with her dress, but still looks sexy and gorgeous, managing to attract her King to the bedroom. What I love about Queen Gorgo’s style is that, although she can’t get too creative with the white cloth, she manages to drape it differently every day, her own (and only) way of expressing her style during that time (which didn’t give women much room to budge).

We have a lot more freedom when it comes to getting dressed these days, but I still can’t get enough of this Queen Gorgo Grecian look. I love all the gold. I love the clean, flowy white tops. I love the flat Gladiator sandals that are dressy enough to go out without hurting your feet. And, of course, I like paying homage to my home girl, Queen Gorgo… in my own, modern way.

Obviously no one’s going to go to class with a white sheet wrapped creatively around their body  (we save that sort of stuff for the theme parties.), so I chose one very Grecian element and built the rest of the outfit around it. I love this drapey white tunic – it just screams Gorgo. I wanted it to really stand out so I paired it with leggings, which which really allow all the focus and attention to be on the top and accessories. (And since the top is long and covers the booty, it totally works.)

Naturally, gladiator sandals were the perfect footwear choice for this look, but I chose these ones in particular because you can really get the whole “Greek Goddess” effect by strapping these up your ankle, over the pants. At the same time, they’re totally on-trend so you won’t look like you’re 6 months late for Halloween. Finally, the gold accessories really complement the gold in the top and the gold in the sandals perfectly, bringing the entire outfit together.

In the end, you’ve got yourself a perfectly timeless look that works for both day or night and says, “Come back with your shield, or on it.” And who doesn’t want their outfit saying that?

I’m really sad to see summer go (waaaah, goodbye beach days!), but I am kinda, sorta (ok, REALLY) excited to break out my new wardrobe for fall. I’m getting sick of my flip flops and summer dresses and really just want to wear some light sweaters and <drool> boots!

Super Skinny Jeans

Some dudes have fabulous legs, don’t get me wrong, but I’d rather see them tanning under a pair of board shorts at the beach than outlined in super tight, stretchy denim.  Oh, and guess what?  Your junk doesn’t look so hot when it’s squeezed to one side of a pair of low-riding jeans that you probably stole from my dirty laundry basket.

Murses

Do guys really need to carry that much stuff around?  Dudes should have a wallet, a phone, and some keys (preferably to an amazing apartment and a hot car, but I digress).  That’s it.  If you have anything else, then it better be schoolbooks or gym clothes, in which case you can get a messenger bag.  A MANLY messenger bag.

Manpris

Guys may think they look European and stylish, but they really just look like they stole my mother’s pants by mistake for the walk of shame home on a Sunday morning.  Capris are barely acceptable for women, so men should definitely not embrace the manpri trend.  Guess what – you look stocky, short and ridiculous in them, too.

Male Gladiator Sandals

WHAT!  Men are trying to steal this glorious trend away from us??  I have so many issues with this.  First and foremost, dudes have ugly feet.  No joking, as much as I love dudes, I can’t stand their feet.  I definitely do not want to see those hairy, unwashed monsters in a pair of strappy gladiators.  Don’t even think about getting a pedicure and using that as an excuse to wear them, either (…again, I suspect Adam Lambert).

Male Headbands

Dude. WTF.  If a guy has long hair, I’m down with that (really down with that), but do not try to style it up with a headband and then rock out at the local bar.  Let it be free, homie.  And if your hair isn’t long and you’re still trying to rock the head gear?  We’re gonna have to address those issues later…

Anything Bought In The Women’s Section

Seriously?  There isn’t enough clothing on the male side of the store, they have to skulk over to our side?  I understand that some dudes are slender and need a different cut than the rest of the American male population, but there are stores that specifically cater to those kinds of men (yay, Uniqlo and American Apparel!).  If only guys would do some research, they could find plenty of male clothing lines that have fantastic style and cuts.  Stay. Out. Of. My. Section.  I already have to fight off that hipster biotch for those rad jeans – I don’t want to have to throw an elbow at a dude, too.

At first glance, they leave me thinking, “Why else would I wear all this stuff on my ankle unless I was going to Delta Sig’s Toga Party?” Unless I was going to grab a stick, part the red sea and call myself the second coming of Moses, Gladiator sandals didn’t really seem like my vibe. I was perfectly happy with my patent leather flats and woven wedges for summer. But then you go to stores like Saks, and Nordstrom, and DSW and Target and the more you see the more you like them. Sort of like The Pussycat Dolls; at first you think WTF is this crappy song, but by since the radio plays it 3 times every. single. hour, by days end you’re obsessed.

So now with my newfound gladiator obsession, not only do I have the perfect pair of shoes if I do decide to step up to the Moses challenge, but I have those perfect gladiator flats for my maxi dresses and awesome gladiator pumps for my cute summer minis as well.
