Confession time.

A big part of the reason I’m such a TV addict is I because I love the romcom romances that these TV shows feed their viewers. I love the will they won’t they of it. The build up. The cute scenes. The perfect moments. And yes the perfect kisses, which prove that if you try hard enough good chemistry can in fact, be faked. But anyway, like I was saying. I love the romances of the these TV shows and all cute and sexy scenes that come along with those romances. Like the makeout moments, which, there are quite a few of.

So this week, with TV lacking this summer season, I’d though I’d reflect on some of my favorite tv romances and the memorable makeout moments that accompanied them…and give you, and me, a chance to oh, ah, and aw over them by linking you to the scenes on YouTube.

10. Alex and Izzie in the bar. This one made the list more for the speech Alex makes that proceeds the kiss than the kiss itself, but also a little bit for the kiss. In Izzie’s words “Seriously.”

9. Cappie and Casey on the stairs. A loyal fan of Greek I waited patiently for these two crazy kids to finally get together. And their get back together scene, and kiss, really did live up to the hype. Mostly though, I love this scene because of their awkward pre-kiss ramblings and insecurities. Adorable.

8. Matt and Julie on the football field. Matt and Julie of Friday Night Lights (a recently canceled, completely underrated show I highly recommend to all of you) are the epitome of sweet and innocent first love. And so is this kiss.

7. Nathan and Haley in the rain. One Tree Hill took a turn off the deep end back around the second scary stalker story line, but when the show first started out even I was a Nathan and Haley fan. I mean they had the steamiest makeout sessions. Especially in the rain.

6. Seth and Summer upside down. I know they stole it from Spiderman but they gave Peter Parker and M.J. their due credit, which really only made the moment cuter. I’m a sucker for Seth, okay? So sue me.

5. Veronica and Logan on the balcony. Maybe this one wouldn’t make it into everyone’s top five but it makes it into mine. Mostly because of the way Veronica kisses Logan first, then shakes her head and walks away as if to say “what the hell was I thinking?” before Logan reels her back in. Totally classic.

4. Meredith and Derek in the elevator.  Mer and Der may have had their ups and downs throughout the seasons, but back in the day no one did steamy elevator scenes quite like these two. And for that we owe them their due respect.

3. Chuck and Blair in the limo. Yes Gossip Girl has gone down hill lately but who could forget that first kiss that started it all between Chuck and Blair? I mean in the back of a limo, with those vintage effects Gossip Girl used to do back when it was still cool, and Sum 41′s “With Me”  playing in the background, it was kind of perfect.

2. Pacey and Joey on the side of the road. Dawson’s Creek is a WB teen drama classic so obviously it was making the list. But there were a lot of steamy makeout sessions to choose from. I went with Pacey and Joey’s first kiss. Because they’re way better suited for one another than Dawson and Joey. And because I’m a sucker for the shut up kiss. Don’t ya ever get tired of talking? 

1. Ross and Rachel in the cafe. A tough choice  but who could really compete with the two season in the making, anger induced, passion filled kiss that officially started the will-they-won’t-they Ross and Rachel saga? No one. That’s why they’re number one, ladies. That’s why they’re number one.

There are a lot of inconsistencies between real high school and the way high school is portrayed on TV shows. For example, the fact that TV high schools let students chill aimlessly in the hall every 10 minutes or how they obviously never have any homework since their fictional lives are way too action-packed to have time for anything like that.

But, regardless of the unrealistic differences, we watch and try to relate to these shows… although, it’s pretty hard to relate to a certain class of fictional high school students when none of them ever seem to graduate.

When Ryan Murphy, the producer of Glee, announced that he would be graduating the cast of the show and bringing in new people, I was a bit surprised, but definitely relieved. Yes, the characters we’ve all come to know and love will be missed, but would you really want them to be 3-year super-seniors?

Check out some of the other shows that decided to make their students stay back over and over again for the sake of high ratings.

Do you think it’s okay for shows to “graduate” and replace their original cast, or would you rather see the cast of your favorite show stay in high school forever? Do you remember any other shows whose cast members never seemed to grow up?

I’m going to put this bluntly: it’s time to call it quits.

I say this not because I hate you but because I used to love you. Once upon a time you were the highlight of my Monday night, rivaling even The Bachelor for the most sacred spot in my heart. You were funny and entertaining and Upper East Side style scandalous without being ridiculous. (For future reference, here’s a barometer: Blair sleeping with Chuck in the back of his limo? Okay. Chuck trading Blair and her services to his Uncle in exchange for is hotel? Not okay. Thinly veiled drug references? Okay. Chuck openly talking about his coke habit in last week’s episode? Not okay.) Your characters were fresh and unique, and not completely overpowered by guest stars, and everybody had a plot. I mean, really, all Nate does now is make out with guest stars.

Maybe if you stuck to your original formula you wouldn’t have to drop both Taylor Momsen and Jessica Szohr, two regulars that have been there from the beginning. Now, I can understand Taylor Momsen; that girl went off the slutty deep end. But Vanessa? Jessica Szohr is a gorgeous girl and an amazing role model. What did she ever do to you? Except turn into an evil, annoying character. Which is all your fault.

I think these latest developments signal only one thing. This show has run it’s course. It’s time to call it a day, Gossip Girl.  Close up your doors and end the series, before you become just another One Tree Hill.

We ladies are constantly on the look out for the hottest fashion (at the lowest prices) and the coolest trends. Even the girl who just wears the same pair of jeans every day is looking for a comfortable pair of denim that make her ass look great. And that’s why we’re constantly providing a running commentary on the fashion we see on a daily basis. While some of it is certainly cringe-worthy, there’s a lot of it that is ooo-ahh-I-want-it worthy.  It’s not uncommon to see strangers ask each other where someone bought something.

But what about those things you can’t have and the people you can’t ask? The Manolo Blahnik’s you see Carrie Bradshaw wearing on almost every episode of Sex and the City or the Hermes bracelet on Kim Kardashian? Everyone wants it but few can have it…and that’s why I have a never-ending list of celebrity closets I want to raid.

These women have the clothes that make me wish I could walk into Barney’s, whip out a Fendi wallet, take out my limitless Amex Black card, and buy the entire store. Of course, this is currently impossible for me so instead I have to spend my days ogling the fashion magazines and fantasizing about shopping in my fave celebs walk-in closets.

Blame it on the M-M-M-M-M-Miley

So apparently drinking and doings drugs is cool again.

At least that’s what our friends over at Jezebel are telling us the stats at Drugfree.org are telling them. 45% of high school students don’t see a “great risk” in heavy drinking. And 68% of those high school students have had their first drink by age 14. Additionally, since 2008 the use of marijuana is up from 32% to 39% and the use of ecstasy is up from 4% to 6%.

But let’s step back from the statistics for a minute an discuss the stuff behind the stats. For the first time in years substance abuse is once again on the rise and the real question on everyone’s mind has to be, why?

The director of strategy at Drugfree.org suggests budget cuts to prevention programs, the legalization of medicinal marijuana or even the stress of difficult economic times. But for me at least, these don’t seem like viable options.  I don’t think medicinal marijuana is behind this increase, nor do I think it’s the hard economic times. I mean, if teens don’t see the risk of binge drinking do you really think they see the ramifications of the stock market crash? And, honestly, I don’t think it’s the loss of prevention programs either. Teens today live in a world without limits. All the information they could ever want is at their fingertips. Pamphlets won’t tell them anything Google can’t.

Still though, that poses the question, what are the real reasons for this increase in drinking and drugs in the past few years?

The media, perhaps? We can’t ignore the fact that we live in a time when just about everyone is glorifying drinking and drugs. The pilot of Gossip Girl has a then sixteen year-old Blair and Serena sitting at a hotel bar sipping martinis. In that very same episode, Chuck and Nate are stepping outside at a party to smoke some pot. The cast of The Jersey Shore dedicates their every night to binge drinking.  90210’s newest female lead has just started using marijuana, and that would be the second drug problem this teen soap showcases. And let’s not forget the Glee episode. So if high school students are more comfortable than ever with drugs and alcohol do we really have to ask why?

But then again we can’t ignore the peer pressure factor. It’s perfectly clear that the media portrays drug and alcohol abuse as the cool thing to be doing. So is this just something that teens are doing to look cool in front of their friends? Or are they even really doing it? Is it possible that they’re exaggerating their exploits to feel cool? They know the risks but they don’t want to look like the odd man out so they exaggerate their exploits. Any frat boy can tell you how that works.

I don’t have a straight answer. And neither does Jezebel. Or Drugfree.org. But that doesn’t mean we can’t discuss the possibilities. So lay it on me, ladies. What do you think the reasons for this increase in substance abuse is? Is it the media? Peer pressure? Attempts to look cool, or just gross exaggerations?

The Kiss – probably one of the most popular posters for college guys. I’m referring to the picture, taken by Tanya Chalkin, of two girls, lying in bed in their underwear, kissing. Yes, the one I’m sure everyone has seen at one point or another during their college career. This picture, which is said to represent the freedom and experimentation during college, is one big, fat lie.

A study by the Center of Disease Control showed that it is actually women without high school diplomas that are more likely to have same-sex experiences than women in college. Sorry boys, but 10 percent of women aged 22 to 44 with a college degree reported to having a same-sex experience as opposed to 15 percent of women lacking a high school diploma. In addition, the numbers show that the numbers are rising for women with lower educational achievements.

Can you hear that? It’s the sound of college boys’ dreams shattering into teeny, tiny bits.

This study comes years after New York Magazine released a story called “Bi for Now,” which introduced the world to the idea and allegedly budding trend of ‘lesbians until graduation’ (or as they called them, ‘hasbians’). The idea was fun, exciting and controversial so, naturally, it caught on, and soon everyone was talking about it. Before long, girl on girl experimentation was thought of as just another college expectation, like final exams or getting really drunk on your 21st birthday.

It’s not to say there’s anything wrong with kissing a girl and liking it, but there is a problem with being pressured by others to experiment in a way you’re not comfortable with just because it’s a common belief that all college girls experiment with other girls. Especially when that belief is not even true.

And the pressure is everywhere. Not just at the campus bar where drunk guys gather and chant “KISS!” at two girls at the center of the circle. The whole idea of girl-on-girl experimentation has completely overwhelmed the media and perpetuated the idea that having a “lesbian encounter” is normal and expected.

Think about how lesbians, bisexuals or even bi-curious women are represented on TV and in movies. There’s the sorority girl, such as Rebecca Logan in Greek, who kisses one girl and then all of a sudden proclaims she’s a lesbian. There is no shock-and-awe, her “coming out” is shrugged off, and within a few episodes she’s back to guys. Or how about in Skins (the good UK version, not the MTV one) when two girls are told to kiss during play rehearsal even though it’s not part of the scene, and they do so without much hesitation.

I’ve never had a girl-on-girl experience, much like 90% of my female peers, but I have to imagine it’s not that easy, that quick, that carefree. I mean, that is if it’s actually a moment of experimentation and not just a ploy to get male attention. It’s not like throwing back a shot or hugging a friend; there is a lot of thought and emotion that goes into something like that and we don’t see that. Ever.

Instead, we see girls just frivolously kissing other girls, experimenting for a hot minute, then moving on as if nothing happened at all. How is someone supposed to truly explore this idea if it’s being treated with such blatant disregard everywhere she looks?

The seemingly heterosexual woman character kissing another woman has become so prevalent and watered down that it’s now known as the “lesbian kiss episode” on television. Think about all the shows you watch (or used to watch) and how many times you’ve seen it: The O.C., Glee, Gilmore Girls, 90210, Gossip Girl, and the list goes on. Everybody’s doing it now.

Except they’re not. Not in real life, at least. Which means that none of us should ever feel pressured to try it out. Of course, if you’re curious, by all means, do it. But don’t feel bad if you don’t find yourself in the arms of another girl before you don that cap and gown. Just like there’s nothing wrong with never trying it out, there’s also nothing wrong with going LPG (Lesbian Post-Graduation).

So we all know that lately pop culture has been a little bit obsessed with vampires. True Blood. Twilight. The Vampire Diaries. It’s everywhere we look and a part of everything we do. But we’re not just obsessed with vampires. We’re obsessed with vampire boyfriends. Edward Cullen in particular. An as someone who spends way too much time in the fictional world I have to step back, and ask…really? I mean come on!

Edward Cullen is not the best fictional boyfriend out there. He’s obsessive, overbearing, and would find great satisfaction in tearing open his girlfriend’s veins and drinking her blood. This is the guy that makes you swoon? Well not me. He’s not my idea of the best fictional boyfriend out there. He’s not even close. Who is, you ask? Well I’ve compiled a list to answer just that question (and put off any of the more important tasks I have yet to accomplish today). Below are my top ten fictional boyfriends, all of whom are real flesh and blood, albeit fictional, men that don’t sparkle in the sunlight.

10. Mike Chang. You know, Tina’s boyfriend from Glee. Not only is he a football player but he has swoon worthy dance moves and even swoon worthier abs.

9. Flynn Rider. The last Disney prince. The one from Tangled. Yes I’ve seen Tangled. What’ is it to you? A little sarcastic, a little funny, and very much the reluctant hero. He’s definitely not as boring as the Disney princes before him and so for that reason alone he makes the list.

8. Nathaniel Archibald. Okay, so I don’t have any legitimate reasons for this one seeing as how he’s a manwhore both literally and figuratively, he’s cheated on almost all of his girlfriends, and he’s hooked up with every female regular besides Lily van der Woodsen (as far as we know), but… he’s so pretty!

7. Seth Cohen. Yes, the geeky guy from the O.C. made it onto the list, mostly because I’ve always had the biggest crush on Adam Brody, but also because that upside down, in the rain, Spiderman kiss that he and Summer share is one of my favorite TV kisses of all time.

6. Cappie. Casey’s on again off again boyfriend from Greek is a favorite of mine. Yes, he’s childish and has a bit of a Peter Pan complex but he’s also a genuinely nice guy. And when Casey asked him where he wanted to be in ten years he said “I want to be with you.” Sigh.  If only.

5. Chandler Bing. The class clown. The commitment-phobe. The one everyone thought was gay. Okay, so that’s all true. But he’s also the guy who overcame all of that and fell in love with his best friend. Plus, he looks really cute with glasses, don’t you think?

4. Aiden Shaw. I was a Carrie and Mr. Big fan. I always have been and I always will be. But that doesn’t mean I can’t appreciate just how awesome of a boyfriend Aiden really was. He forgave Carrie for cheating on him, redid her apartment, and his voice had this sort of twang to it that just makes me want to watch him speak. Shirtless.

3. Dan Humphrey. Serena van der Woodsen’s loyal Brooklyn boyfriend. Dan gets a bit of a bad rep with the Upper East Siders but personally I think he’s a great guy. Cute. Smart. Funny. And he has that whole tortured artist thing down perfectly. What’s a girl gotta do be his muse?

2. Alex Karev. This poor guy has yet to have a relationship that doesn’t end in his girlfriend going crazy, dying, or moving across the country, and I think that’s terrible because Alex deserves better. He’s a good guy, deep, deep, deep down, who will always be therefore his girl when she needs him. Give him a lasting love interest, Shonda Rhimes.

1. Pacey Witter. Yes, the sidekick from Dawson’s Creek is taking the top spot and I don’t feel the least bit guilty about it. Maybe it’s the swooning pre-teen in me but when I think of my favorite fictional boyfriend, I think of Pacey Witter. With Joey, Andie, or even that other chick he dates in the later episodes when he can’t have Joey, Pacey Witter was a great boyfriend. In my eyes this boy can do no wrong. And plus, you know, he’s adorable.

In case you couldn’t tell based on this list I have a type. It’s called tall, dark, and a little bit dorky and/or dangerous. So if you know anyone that fits the bill, send him my way, okay?

Who are your dream fictional boyfs?

Wanna know what happened on this week’s creation of Gossip Girl?  Why don’t you look up the word ‘lamesauce’ in the dictionary and get back at me.  Didn’t find anything?  Well, it’s time to petition Merriam-Webster, because that’s the only word I can think of to describe the disappointment I feel for this show on a weekly basis.  A girl can only be distracted with lace blazers and Nate smirks for so long before she totally gives up.

Basically, I need a wicked twist this season, and I need it now.

The best twist about this episode?  Nate is back to his old self.  He’s smokin’ the reefer and shakin’ his booty to Tik Tok.  Did I just say reefer?  What am I, forty?  Based upon the fact I age ten years per episode why yes, yes I am. (But I don’t care how old I am; I still want Nate to babysit me. He likes cougars, right?)

It pains me greatly that the closest thing to excitement in this episode was some sweet, rolled Mary Jane and the sparkles on Serena’s birthday skirt. (Note: not her birthday SUIT. I don’t think Serena would be one to vagazzle…though that would have upped the excitement a bit). I mean, I could go to a campus frat party and find that; I turn to Gossip Girl for the thrilling drama, for god’s sake. Thrilling drama that has been MIA since season 3. Therefore, it’s time to take action.  It’s time to really reach out to anyone out there that is willing listen and even the ones that are not.  So I’m going to do what I do second best: write an open letter. (First best goes to Wine Pong. No one can stop me once that Franzia hits my system!)

My Open Letter to Gossip Girl:

Dear GG,

Hi, I’m Brittany, one of those angry, distraught, broken-record GG fans that really likes Nate’s outer arm muscles in flannel, hates anyone who dates Chuck other than Blair and secretly dreams about touching Rufus’ burly man hands.  I simply cannot stop searching for that allure Gossip Girl once provided for my Monday nights.  Even if I have to use my words and hope you find this on the interwebs.

You know a show is bad when 18-year-old boys who haven’t grown an inch since their 12th birthday are writing checks for $100,000 because they want to keep crazy cocaine addicts happy.  And that’s exactly where Gossip Girl is going.  I understand you’re trying to insert Dimples Damien into all of this in attempt to make things better and brighter for Gossip Girl, but that spray tan is just too much. And it’s not working. Can’t we just keep Lily as the individual writing the checks and sealing the envelopes? And can we have the sorta cynical but totally adorable Eric back? What’s with all this doom and gloom?

And I still can’t stand the ignorance that is infesting Serena’s mind. You’re making it REALLY hard to like her; I can’t even bring myself to drool over her long, luscious locks anymore. I think every GG fan loves the idea of all this romance and love, but what kind of heroine are you creating when she abandons all rational thought for every guy who looks her way? That’s….healthy. Maybe someone can send a memo to the wardrobe department to stop dressing Serena in such tight sweaters that prevent blood flow to her brain. Maybe that will help?

I’d also like to talk about Blair’s future.  I understand she can’t brush her own hair on a daily basis, so what gives when Blair is pretty much manning the entire editorial portion of W magazine?  Isn’t she still in college?  Couldn’t you have tried to make that whole storyline realistic? Because it just…wasn’t.

Heavy sigh. (Yeah, I had to type that out so you know just how upset all of this is making me.) All of this ‘bad episode’ business is making me crazy and I think I’m about to say something I’ll forever regret. But so be it.

Can we bring Little J back?

I don’t care; dress her like a low class street whore and cake her face with raccoon makeup, but bring her back already!  And for the sake of the Upper East Side’s relationship with me and my living room – Dan and Blair can hook up now.  I will allow it. I’m ready for an extreme Serena-Blair falling out and a ‘no-no’ hook up sesh. Serena’s a crappy, selfish person, anyway; she doesn’t deserve Dan. Let’s have him fall into the arms of a witty, intelligent, beautiful woman who does.

Make it happen.  Or I’m going to change the channel and watch disgusting group dates and swimming sessions in Costa Rica.  And trust me, you don’t want me to have to do that. Word to the wise: it’s always better to give me what I want. Just ask my parents.
