Let’s make some non-New Years Resolutions.

MTV’s reality explosions, “Sixteen and Pregnant” and “Teen Mom,” sparked controversy and debate around the nation. Leading to speculation, judgment and even, at times, envy, these shows offered America a small glimpse into the lives of young, teenage mothers. But take away the lights, the camera, and the millions of viewers and wonder what it would actually be like to go through senior year of high school with a baby bump. Would you feel anxious and excited or alone and scared? Would your family and friends support you or leave you and your growing belly behind? Gaby Rodriguez, a student at Toppenish High, took it upon herself to find out the answers to these riveting questions.

With a looming senior project ahead of her, Gaby Rodriguez, a 17-year-old “A” Student, decided to fake her own pregnancy as a social experiment. Spending 6 ½ months of her senior year with a wire mesh and cotton quilt belly, Gaby tried to understand the stereotypes and rumors that go along with teenage pregnancy. She took careful notes of what was said not only to her face, but also behind her back. Only a handful of people knew the truth about her charade, including her best friend, boyfriend, mother and principle. The rest of her fellow students, siblings and teachers were left out in the dark with their criticism. Her boyfriend’s parents thought it was going to be a boy.

According to the Yakima Herald, the experiment came to a close during an emotional school assembly entitled, “Stereotypes, rumors, and statistics.” Here, quotes were read of what people actually said about her character throughout the experiment.

“In essence, she gave up her senior year,” one student read, “She sacrificed her senior year to find out what it would be like to be a potential teen mom.”

When Gaby took her of homemade, prosthetic belly, she was met with both confusion and nervous laughter. However, after the short question and answer portion of the assembly, there was a standing ovation.

“She fooled me. I never would’ve guessed it,” Vicente Villanueva tells the Yakima Herald, “I’m really surprised.”

“I didn’t know what to say. I just started crying,” adds Gaby’s niece, Angel Jalomo.

Gaby was relieved when it was all over and was even more thrilled that she didn’t have to wear her fake belly to prom. Instead, she wore a form-fitting mermaid gown and a sense of freedom from nasty rumors and hurtful speculations.

I mean Jenelle Evans? Does that name ring a bell with anyone? Does she sound like a celebrity to any of you? No?

That’s because she’s not. But yet she was on Celebuzz.com. Apparently there seems to be this misguided notion nowadays that  if you appear on a reality TV show you automatically reach celebrity status. But that’s  just not how it works. Or, at least that’s not how it should work.

I mean how exactly do we define the word celebrity these days? And if people like Jenelle Evans are making the cut, is it time to ask ourselves if our standards are too low? Now I’m not staying that reality TV stars can’t be celebrities. You can’t deny  Kim Kardashian or even LC that right. But any person from any old random reality TV show? Isn’t that taking it a bit too far? I mean why don’t we just throw up some pictures of Kate Gosselin and call it a day? Oh wait, we’ve done that already.

Celebrities are supposed to be household names, ideally people who have even accomplished something. They are famous individuals, people who are world renown, people with recognizable names. They’ve embedded themselves in pop culture. Lady Gaga. Ke$ha. Britney Spears. Even LiLo and Miley. We all know who  they are. Jenelle Evans? Not so much. And if it were up to me it would stay that way.

This week, the Golden Globes happened along with a lot of other fun stuff! Celebs got pissed, celebs got engaged, celebs broke up, and some celebs even had secret babies! All in all, a well-rounded week, I’d say.

Back To The Semester Parties

1. You’ll probably never see Ricky Gervais at the Golden Globes again. Despite the fact that he did a hilarious job of hosting the Golden Globes, which would have been utterly dull without him, Ricky Gervais’s jokes are being slammed by the majority of Hollywood. Why? I guess because he made fun of both Angelina Jolie and Johnny Depp within the first five minutes (I guess Hollywood royalty isn’t used to being picked on…), he trashed the members of the Hollywood Foreign Press, and according to some people, he just went ‘too far’ with the jokes he made about Robert Downey Jr., Bruce Willis, and Tom Cruise. There were tons of rumors that he was asked to never return – but apparently, Ricky has made that decision on his own. Can we pull the stick out of Hollywood’s Botox-injected butt, please?

2. Halle Berry is having baby daddy drama. She’s going into a custody battle with her ex, Gabriel Aubry, over their daughter Nahla. He wants to be officially declared the father, and wants joint custody of his daughter. Can’t really blame the guy, can you? Their break-up seemed pretty friendly, but let’s see what happens when the court gets involved.

3. Anne Hathaway had a great week – not only has it been announced that she’ll be making an appearance on Glee, but she was also cast as Catwoman in Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises. I guess we’ll find out if Anne has the vocal ability to hold her own on Glee, and the body to pull off that catsuit. All that and the fact that she gets to host the Oscars with James Franco AND got to make out with Jake Gyllenhaal for a movie makes me kind of hate her… and want her life.

4. Kanye West is PISSED. Earlier this week, the rapper made a little joke on his Twitter about Britney Spears: “I’mma let you be #1, but me and Jay-Z single is one of the best songs of all time!” Britney’s manager replied with, “Thanks for letting us be #1. Much appreciated.” The whole thing was obviously a joke, with Kanye kind of making fun of himself. But the media blew the entire thing out of proportion (WHAT? I know, that never happens), and Kanye was not very happy about it. He wrote a little blog about it, saying “This sh*t takes the air out of my lungs sometimes from blogs to news reports… enough already!!” Amen, Kanye. AMEN.

5.  Nicole Kidman had a secret baby. Kind of. She and Keith Urban welcomed a daughter born through a surrogate mother. No one knew it was happening, so it was pretty random. Too bad this didn’t happen last week, when everyone in Hollywood decided to get pregnant.

Back To The Semester Studying

1. Regis Philbin is retiring. He’s leaving his long-standing post as the host of Live! With Regis and Kelly. Everyone is already wondering who will replace him… but no one seems to be too surprised. That dude is OLD.

2. The Coachella 2011 lineup was announced. If you live in California or near this area, just know that I am extremely jealous of you. Set to perform are Kanye West, Arcade Fire, Kings of Leon, Lauryn Hill, Interpol, Neon Trees, Jimmy Eat World, Duran Duran, and soooo many more. Tickets are almost $300 for the 3-day concert, but it’s also an amazing celeb-and-music filled event that everyone should experience. Like I said… jealous, from cold New York.

3. Jake Gyllenhaal was spotted with Camilla Belle, and the dating rumors immediately flooded the Internet. It WAS kind of a weird coincidence that right after he breaks up with Taylor Swift, he was spotted with her reported ‘enemy’. Oh man, I can’t wait to hear this song.

4. Don’t worry, ladies and guys – Pauly D is still single, as is January Jones. January Jones and her boyfriend, SNL star Jason Sudekis, broke up this week. Honestly, I had no idea they were dating (shameful for me to admit as a gossip blogger), but that sucks because she’s beautiful and he’s funny. And if you were hoping to run into Pauly D at a club and make out with him, you still can. He denied that he’s dating both Chloe Sevigny and Brittany Gastineau.

5. Two more Hollywood engagements: Jodie Sweetin, former Full House star, got engaged. Aw, Stephanie Tanner! But I can’t say I’m happy for these other two – Jesse James and Kat Von D. Ew. You deserve each other. (Sandra, you’re so much better).

When you live with your best friends, it’s totally acceptable to cut loose and dance and sing at the top of your lungs to Ke$ha. Living with friends is fun, carefree, exciting. I wouldn’t change living with my friends for the world. On the other hand, living with a random roommate also allows you to experience new people and hang out with a different crowd.  It can be refreshing, enlightening and you may even gain a new friend out of your random housing assignment. But eventually, with any roommate no matter if she’s a friend or random, disaster strikes because you left your hairbrush out for the third time in a row.

Here are some tips to keep your roommates happy:

Do have roommate nights. Grab a bowl of popcorn, sit on the couch, or your extra long twin bed, and put in a chick-flick. My roommates and I always have Gossip Girl Mondays. Having these nights keeps your bond strong; it’s an easy way to break away from some of the stress of school, especially when it’s midterm week and you don’t say a word to your roommate because you’re cramming for your Chemistry test.

Don’t blast music when your roommate is studying. We’ve all been there—you have an exam in each 3 of your classes and an essay due, it’s 1am and the library is too far of a trek. You are focused, in the study-zone and your roommate decides to have people over for a power hour. Great. Treat your roommate the way you would want to be treated, so respect that she needs some silence and one day she will return the favor.

Do clean up after yourself.  There’s nothing more annoying to coming home from a long, stressful day of classes to dirty dishes in the sink or an overflowing trashcan with yesterday’s tuna can on top.  So if it’s your stuff, clean it up!

Don’t gossip about your roommate! It’s normal to vent about your roommate’s annoying habits, but if you’re talking about her to your whole floor, chances are she WILL find out. If you have a problem, confront her first before gossiping to your hall mates. If still have a problem, talk to your RA; they are there to help you.

Do enjoy your time living with a roommate! College is full of new experiences and having a roommate is one of them.  Try and form a friendship with your roommate because she’s going to be there when you’re freaking out about your final exam at 8am and when you’re trying to decode your new interest’s text messages.

Maybe in an attempt to make up for all the cheating and divorcing that went on this past year, half of Hollywood seemed to get engaged over the holidays. I guess they really let the Christmas spirit get to them. Either way, congrats celebs. I only hope that at least one of these couples will still be around come 2012.

Poppin’ Champage, New Years Eve VIP Style

1. Natalie Portman is knocked up. And she’s getting married! Hey, at least they’re doing this the right way. Natalie got engaged to her choreographer from Black Swan, Benjamin Millepied, over the holidays. The announcement was a total surprise to everyone since we were too busy being psychologically warped by her movie to even care about her personal life.

2. Elton John became a happy daddy. Sir Elton John and his partner David Furnish are now proud daddies to a little baby boy. He was born from a surrogate mother on Christmas Day, and his name is Zachary Jackson Levon Furnish-John. Whew, that’s a long name – but at least it’s normal-ish. This is a super cute Christmas story, so congrats guys!

3. Reese Witherspoon is also engaged. To continue with this string of new engagements are Reese Witherspoon and Jim Toth, who recently confirmed that they’re getting married. I can’t help but be jealous of Reese’s romantic life, which includes Ryan Phillippe and Jake Gyllenhaal, but I don’t know about this guy… I mean, I guess he’s kind of hot. Either way, congratulations are in order.

4. 84-year-old Hugh Hefner gets engaged… to a 24-year-old. To which I can only say… ewwww. Hugh Hefner proposed to his girlfriend, Playboy Playmate Crystal Harris, over the holidays. Hugh tweeted the news, saying, “A truly memorable Christmas Eve.” Yeah I would say so. I vommed all over my grandmother when this news forced me to picture Hugh naked.

5. Kelly Osbourne went a little bit crazy. Back to the insane celeb stories we’re a little more used to. Kelly’s boyfriend Luke Worrall, who she’s been dating for the last two years, has apparently been cheating on her – something Kelly unfortunately found out about over the holidays. Aw, sucks girl. But Kelly obviously isn’t about to let him get away with it without trying to embarrass him a little – which is exactly why she let the world know how much of a dirtbag he is through Twitter. She tweeted, “All he did was use me. All girls, beware of @Luke_worral he is a using c*nt! He used me for my money a free ride.” Everyone’s talking about how insane Kelly is but, hey, can you really blame her?

NYE Spent At Home Watching The Ball Drop

1. Amber Portwood goes to jail. I know that as a gossip blogger, I’m supposed to care about these things… but I can honestly say that I really don’t care at all about MTV’s Teen Mom OR Amber Portwood. Unfortunately, I still have to read about her. And after all of the physical and emotional abuse she laid on her baby-daddy, she definitely deserves to go to jail – and definitely does NOT deserve to see her baby girl any more.

2. Rihanna and her BF Matt Kemp supposedly split. I guess love didn’t come to everyone during the holidays – Rihanna and her cute boyfriend Matt Kemp have allegedly broken up. According to Us Weekly, neither one of them are really that upset about the split. I really wonder who she’s gonna be with next…

3. Someone named Ke$ha the worst dressed of 2010. Okay, so this isn’t really news, but I just really wanted to add it because I completely agree with it. Ke$ha’s outfits are just not okay. Ever. And I know she’s trying to be as edgy and out-there as Lady Gaga and Nicki Minaj, but she’s just not. Celeb stylist Phillip Bloch tells her to call him, because “what you’re doing is just not working!” HA.

4. I know you didn’t think it could be possible, but even more celebs announced their engagement. Lily Allen and her boyfriend are going to get married, which is cute news…and then LeAnn Rimes and Eddie Cibriani also announced they’re getting married, which is just not as cute. And I say that because we all know that LeAnn totally stole Eddie right under his wife’s nose.

5. Someone wants to make a movie out of Lindsay Lohan’s life. I don’t know, this could be good, or it could be epically bad. You would think that Lindsay would be thrilled by any kind of publicity at this point, but no. Her and Dina are furious. Anyway, one screenwriter wants to take on the task of making a Lindsay Lohan biopic – and I have to say, I’d definitely buy tickets.

Besides Lindsay Lohan being Lindsay Lohan and a few other tidbits of news, celebrity gossip was pretty slow this week. Maybe all the stars are getting ready for the holidays, or maybe they needed a break after last week’s divorce-a-thon, but either way, I hope they do something more interesting next week. I need more scandal!

Getting The Gift You’ve Been Asking For Christmas Morning

1. Lindsay Lohan got in a fight. Rehab is obviously working for our girl Lindsay – earlier this week, she was in danger of being charged with criminal battery coming back from the bar with some friends. But don’t worry, apparently she was only drinking shirley temples (Suure she was Dina). Allegedly, she got in a little bit of a physical fight with a staffer from the Betty Ford Clinic, who accused her of “hand-to-hand” battery. But don’t worry – Linds has tons of excuses up her sleeve. We’re pretty sure she’ll get out of this one just like everything else.

2. Chris Brown completed his domestic violence class. Chris Brown tweeted a picture of his certificate of completion for the domestic violence class he was forced to go to after the Rihanna incident. I know he probably thought that his fans would be proud of him, but I think all it really did was remind people what happened and made them kind of mad. So, maybe not the best idea to bring up the touchy subject on Twitter…

3. Ozzy Osbourne is tired of Lady Gaga. The Prince of Darkness told Us Weekly exactly how he feels about Lady Gaga: he thinks she’s becoming a little bit too over-exposed. He says she’s over-doing it, and she’s gong to lose the “specialness” that she is – adding that he does think she could be a legend like Madonna one day if she stops acting out so much. So, basically, the man who ate a bat on stage thinks Lady Gaga needs to tone it down. I mean, after she stepped out in Paris wearing no pants and only fishnet stockings this week – I might agree.

4. D.J. Pauly D got his own MTV spin-off! I have never found myself attracted to a guy who uses more hair gel then I could in two years – until the second season of Jersey Shore. Pauly D totally charmed me and almost every other girl watching with his catchy and hysterical phrases and his adorable bromance with Vinny. I can’t help but be totally excited about this inevitably ridiculous show. Supposedly it’s going to be called ‘Pauly’s World’ and will be about his life and him hanging out with his friends. Jersey Shore fans, this is not something that can be missed.

5. Bye, bye Spider-Man on Broadway. The Spider-Man play on Broadway that was not such a big hit was stopped this week to increase safety measures after one of the actors fell over 30 feet from a cable wire that snapped. That’s pretty terrifying – he was rushed to the hospitals and producers promised to make the set more safe.

A Fruitcake for Christmas Breakfast

1. The Lonely Island reminded us of why we love sex. I’m a huge fan of The Lonely Island and didn’t think it could get any funnier or sillier then ‘I’m On a Boat’, ‘Jizz In My Pants’ or ‘Dick In a Box’ – but ‘I Love Sex’ is pretty freaking funny. Andy Samberg and co-star Jorma Taccone sing about why sex is so great (“It felt so good when I did it with my penis”) along with Akon in an annoyingly catchy tune. Blake Lively and Jessica Alba make cameos that make the video that much better. Watch it, and try to tell me you didn’t kind of want to have sex right after…

2. Ross – uh, I mean David Schwimmer – is expecting his first kid. I just have to say this – I know David Schwimmer has been in other things after Friends, but he will always be Ross Geller to me. Anyway. Him and his wife Zoe Buckman are expecting their first baby, so congrats to them! We hope she doesn’t get another weird Hollywood baby name.

3. Megan Fox was photographed in a bikini and the Internet went crazy. Horny male celeb bloggers everywhere freaked out when pictures of Megan Fox in a bikini were taken this week. I just have to say, and I know some of you have to agree, girlfriend got way too skinny! Megan is gorgeous, there’s no denying that, and she already had an amazing body – there was no need for improvement. Please don’t lose anymore weight.

4. Heidi Montag is demanding attention – again. Heidi appeared on the cover of Life & Style this week to show off her plastic surgery scars and to whine about how much she regrets them. Um… does anyone care? She got 10 surgeries in ONE DAY just so she could land a few magazine covers and now she wants us to feel sorry for her? She says she feels like ‘Frankenstein’ now – which is what everyone else has been saying for months. Heidi, I have no sympathy for you.

5. Brett Favre wanted Jenn Sterger to masturbate for him on video. It’s not clear if Jenn Sterger actually MADE the video, but she wants us to know about it anyway.

The Textaholic. The movie you’ve been dying to see for weeks now is about to begin and the message comes up on the screen reminding everyone to turn off their cell phones.  The movie starts and as you’re trying to enjoy Jacob’s shirtless bod in Twilight, you’re interrupted by the constant sound of clicking coming from behind you.  It’s two hours tops, people— put the phone away!  If something is really that important, take it outside.

Resolution: Texting Support Group. Enough said.

The Stinker. It may be your best friend or maybe even some random guy in line in a store, but either way— they stink.  Unfortunately, they are so used to their extreme body odor by now that they don’t even notice it anymore.  People may have even told them and they still refuse to jump in the shower once every few weeks.

Resolution: Febreze isn’t just for your mildewy apartment anymore….

The “Do You Like Seafood” Eater. I love to eat and I’m sure a lot of other people do too.  The thing I don’t like about eating is when I’m with someone else and they shovel food into their mouth, start talking, and their food ends up on my plate.  Sorry, do I look like a baby bird that enjoys eating pre-chewed food? No.

Resolution: Ever heard of an etiquette class? Sign ‘em up! And if that doesn’t work, getting a table for 6 when it’s just the two of you and sitting at the other end should send the message loud and clear.

The Less-Than Stellar Roommate. They sound like a wildebeest when they snore, leave sandwiches with living things starting to grow on them under the couch, and make you listen to lovely animal-like grunts coming through the walls (or better yet, across the room in a dorm) when you’re trying to get a good night’s sleep.

Resolution: Two words: Air horn. And I would also highly suggest purchasing ear plugs unless you feel like learning to enjoy noises straight out of the Discovery Channel.

The Attention Whore. Do you know someone that constantly needs all eyes on them 24/7 and expects everyone to drop what they’re doing and focus on them and only them the second they enter a room?  We all do.  Sadly, some people need a wake-up call to realize the world doesn’t always revolve around them.

Resolution: Don’t acknowledge them every second that they expect you to.  After awhile of this, they might have a revelation and suddenly discover that other people in the room may have things to say too! Crazy, I know.

The Creeper. Sometimes it’s hard to resist the urge to stare at people (especially if it’s a cute boy) while you’re hanging out at the mall, or anywhere for that matter. I have to admit, I’m an avid people-watcher myself, but sometimes it gets a little creepy.  Especially if there’s an old man sitting across from you that wouldn’t turn his head away if his life depended on it.

Resolution: Stare back! With big eyes. If he likes it, run away.

The Gossip Girl. She spreads rumors and tells secrets she’s supposed to keep to herself.  There’s nothing more annoying then someone who thrives on causing drama and on top of that, loves every second of making other people’s lives miserable in the process.

Resolution: Give her a taste of her own medicine. I’m not saying go spread around that she’s pregnant with a criminal’s child…but you catch my drift.

The Borrower. One of the best parts about having friends is being able to borrow cute clothes from them.  When someone borrows something, it’s expected that it’ll get returned, but there are always those people who keep “forgetting” that they have something of yours and only give it back when you go fetch it yourself.  And you usually have to rip it out of their dead, lifeless grip.

Resolution: “Borrow” their stuff….and accidentally spill red wine on it. Woops!

The New Year should be full of lots of surprises and lots of fun people.  What are some other annoying people that need a kick in the butt for 2011?

Wowza, we thought last week was bad! This week just womped it! There have been all kinds of crazy flying around this week, and it’s only getting worse. At the rate we’re going, nervous for what’s to come next week. Cheating, drugs, trashing hotel rooms, you know, just another typical week in Hollywood.

Super 2-Hour TV Special

1. Charlie Sheen has lost it. Earlier this week, Charlie was hospitalized after being found in a trashed hotel room at the Plaza Hotel in Manhattan. Reports suggest that it was a drug and alcohol related incident, but his reps maintain that he had an allergic reaction to a medication. And then there was the girl (prostitute? porn star?) hiding in the bathroom. She’s pressing charges against Charlie because he was acting like a looney-bird. Oh and did we mention that Denise and his kids were across the hall? Classy, Charlie.

2. Howard K. Stern, or Anna Nicole Smith’s boyfriend, was found guilty of conspiracy. Psychiatrist Khristine Eroshevich and Howard K. Stern were both found guilty of conspiring to provide drugs to the former star before her death in 2007. Although Stern made a statement saying he was acquitted on several counts relating “to the appropriateness of the medication,” he was still found guilty on account that he obtained drugs for her under false names. No one’s sure if either of them will end up in jail or not, but their sentencing hearing will be on January 6th.

3. Miley’s parents are getting divorced. And he wants joint custody. They are splitting because of “irreconcilable differences” which usually means we won’t find out anything. The couple has been married for seventeen years, or as long as Miley’s been alive. Sad news for Miley…but I bet there are some new angsty songs brewing in that head of hers.

4. Mariah Carey is preggers! Don’t act surprised, I know you already knew that. But still, we’ve been waiting for the official announcement for some time now. They confirmed on The Today Show and said they wanted to keep their privacy, but Thandie Newton accidentally blabbed it on The View earlier this week! Oopsies. Anyway, congrats to Nick and Mariah, we wish you the best of luck!

5. Celine Dion had her twins! Yay! They were born on Saturday October 23, 2010 but they’ve gone all week without names. They finally named the boys Nelson and Eddy after Nelson Mandela and Eddy Marnay. Can’t wait to watch these little guys grow up!

Mini-Series Webisode

1. Scarlett Johansson and Anne Hathaway will be hosting SNL episodes next month! Both have hosted before, but this season of SNL has been pretty funny so the expectations are high. Exciting!

2. In case you didn’t get enough of Avatar in the first movie, don’t worry! James Cameron has confirmed he’s making Avatar 2 and Avatar 3! So that blue catsuit you bought for Halloween will be good for the next few years.

3. I know you were really concerned, but for the record: Kat Von D and Jesse James never broke up and they’re still together. Awesome.

4. Step Up 4 is coming! Well actually, Step Up 4ever. Eek! Maybe by 2012 they’ll have something cooler than 3D to release it in! Like, “reach out and touch his abs” vision.
