Graduation Gift Ideas

grad-presents.jpgSo you graduated. Whoop-de-do. Sure it’s amazing to be done with final exams/papers/all nighters and the like but who are you kidding? Is there anything to look forward to in the real world?

If you are like me, you are totally hesitant about becoming a Real Person with a real schedule and real responsibilities. And if you aren’t dreading the hard, fast and very rude awakening you are about to undergo, I’m here to tell you to jump on this train because it is going to suck.

But there is one thing to look forward to while you are home unpacking all your memories, sifting through pictures of your senior bar crawl and thinking about how it’s only downhill from here on out… graduation gifts! Now that deserves a whoop-de-do (with an exclamation point) !

Only problem is whenever I am put on the spot with a “What do you want for graduation?” it seems as though I can never think of anything and end up getting gifts I don’t really have any use for. Read More »

My Impending Quarterlife Crisis

anxiety-1.jpgOkay, I was aware that I would have to worry about a midlife crisis somewhere down the road. But not for at least another 20 years when I would suddenly feel the need to date much younger men and buy a bright red convertible.

Apparently, I will have a life crisis sooner than I previously thought: the “Quarterlife Crisis.”

It’s a relatively recent phenomenon that is now recognized by many therapists and professionals in the mental health field, and refers to the years out of college when reality sets in. Technically, it is “a period of anxiety, uncertainty and inner turmoil that often accompanies the transition to adulthood.”

Awesome, can’t wait. Basically, young, twentysomethings realize that their entry level jobs suck and that a successful career isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. Ahhh, please don’t make me graduate on Sunday! I don’t want to deal with life, especially this new crisis that I will apparently go through. Read More »

Life After College. It Sucks.

The Office

College is officially over. Not like, “I did the whole graduation thing and I’m spending my summer hanging with my girls” over. No, I mean really over. “Nine to five” over. “No Tiki Tuesdays” over.I started my job.

I wake up before the sun rises every morning. I get home as the sun is setting. I sit at a desk all day doing work. And I can’t wear jeans.

I know that the whole point of college was to prepare me for this point, but I have to say…I really prefer the preparation period. This whole real-world thing is nothing like I thought it was (based completely on the MTV show…is that false advertising or what?!). In fact, it is the complete opposite life in the institution whose purpose was to get me ready for this exact period in my life.

Don’t believe me? See for yourself: Read More »

Peace Out! I’m Taking a Year Off!

travel-1.jpgWell, not really, but…

I have always wondered what it would be like to put life on hold for a while and go travel the world. Although I am too much of a baby to actually go through with it, I am always fascinated by people who delay college a year to go backpacking or take a random job working on a cruise ship purely for the experience.

I stuck to the typical four years of college straight out of high school and have been happy with my decision, yet always wondered what my other options might have been.

I did some research and found out that taking a “gap year” is extremely popular in the UK, and the numbers are rising. More and more students are finding it useful to gain some other type of experience before committing to four years of college.

Gap years can also be taken at the end of college, thus delaying the real world for awhile. I have started to notice more chatter about it here in the U.S. as well. I really think that students are realizing they don’t have to do the typical charted course. I say, more power to ya! If I had a shred of that adventurous nature, I would be booking a flight right now to fly across the world the second I graduate. Read More »

A Personal Reflection About the End of an Era

collegegrad.jpgSo I haven’t posted in a while, mainly because I’m graduating in 20-freakin’-days, and boy oh boy the grind is on to make it across that finish line. With finals whoopin’ my ass 24/7 and the non-stop search for a job, I’ve barely had time to breathe, let alone get my “last month of college-let’s go crazy” drink on. It’s extremely depressing—and even more stressful.

I’m almost glad it’s over. (But not really—it sucks so bad!)

Anyway…with the little time I do have to sit back, atop my roof and think (we finally found a way up there and it’s incredible!) I’ve been reminiscing about the last four years and how great they have been. About all the good times and even the bad. About the tears we’ve cried and the laughs we shared, and most importantly, about the friends that have truly become like family—a family that is soon to part. It’s heart-breaking really.

But I’ve found a light at the end of the tunnel. I’ve discovered something sweet in this simply bitter situation. It’s the start of something new and I’m actually excited about it. Read More »

“Daddy, will you get me a job?”

graduation-12.jpgSo you’re about to graduate and go out into the world. You want a job, you want a good salary, you want dope benefits, and you wouldn’t sneeze at a 401K. Problem is: you know nothing. So what to do?Answer: Ask Mommy and Daddy to do all the legwork for you!

You are (hopefully) rolling your eyes in disgust, yet many relentless “Helicopter Parents” (so named because they hover over their kids’ every move) are doing just that. They are showing up at job fairs, calling employers, and even negotiating salaries. ‘Cause nothing screams “I’m an adult” like “Let my Daddy do the talkin’!” amirite? Read More »

Oh My God, I’m Not Graduating in a Month

not-graduating.jpgAlthough I’m happy for my friend Abigail who will be graduating in a month, I must speak for those of us in the opposite position. I will NOT be graduating in a month. I will not be graduating in one year, when I was scheduled to graduate. In fact, I have no idea when I will graduate from college.

Granted, I transferred, so I have some excuses– my credits got totally chewed up in the transition from college to college. I also dropped a class here and there and neglected to fulfill my gen-ed requirements in favor of taking poetry workshops. Hey, I was trying to find myself! And as a result, graduation has become a far-off dream.

College is no longer a staunch four-year endeavor; I know people here who are 25 and 26 and still consider themselves sophomores. All the more power to them. I’ve always been pretty ambitious and dedicated to the pursuit of achieving a quality education in exactly four years. So the thought– er– the reality of my becoming a super-senior is a bit frightening. Read More »
