The 5 Days No Woman Wants To Relive

Where I live, today — Groundhogs Day — means nothing. Six more weeks of winter in Florida means six weeks of complaining about how it’s supposed to be winter, but it’s 90 degrees outside instead. So the main thing I associate with today is the beloved Bill Murray movie in which Murray’s character repeats the same day again and again.

That may be fun if you’re repeating the best spring break ever or the day you skipped class to watch Dance Moms all day, but there are some days I would NEVER want to relive. You couldn’t pay me a billion million gazillion dollars to go back and live through these days again…especially the ones involving blood. Ew.

1. The Day You Got Your First Period

One day in the fifth grade, I went to pee and found blood. I wanted to believe I had scratched my vagina, because I was NOT ready for my period. My mom had talked to me about periods the year before, and I remember thinking it was too gross, so I would just never get a period. Well, I couldn’t outsmart Aunt Flow. So I trudged home and had to tell my mom, who was THRILLED and immediately drove me to CVS to buy all the pads in the world.

Fashion Porn: Nautical Orgy

I'm on a bleepin' bleepin' boat

According to reliable sources – namely, Punxsatawney Phil – there are still six weeks left of winter. That’s six more weeks of singing the winter blues as we trek to class in our layers upon layers trying to avoid frostbite while still looking cute. Worst of all, that’s six weeks of craving cute spring clothes that retailers are dangling in front of us while we lug our winter coats around the mall.

The tail end of winter sure does suck.

But, it doesn’t have to! Looking to the Resort 2010 collections (also known as Pre-Spring), there are many trends that can be incorporated into our winter looks while still channeling the feeling of warm months to come. What better way to kick those winter blues (covered in icicles) than with nautical clothes? Who wouldn’t rather be on a boat (bustin’ 5 knots, wind whippin’ out my coat) than braving the winter weather?

OK, so putting on some madras and a pair of Rainbows isn’t exactly possible right now, but it’s really easy to incorporate some nautical looks into your winter wardrobe with a little creative layering. Tights, long sleeve shirts and cardigans makes it possible to enjoy nautical clothes now, and then you can strip that stuff off when the snow (finally) melts in the spring. Need a little fashion warm-up? Let’s hit the high seas! Read More »

We Hate You, Punxsatawney Phil (and Others)

As most of you know, Punxsutawney Phil woke up and saw his shadow this morning, alerting us that, yes, there will be six more weeks of hell winter. What a prick!  Six more weeks of bundling up like an Eskimo for the walk to class?  Six more weeks of a constant runny nose and ghostly white complexion? Six more weeks that my wardrobe will consist 100% of sweatpants and Uggs?

As cute as he may be (just look at that face!), we’re pretty much loathing Phil right now. Lucky for that little guy, it’s too cold outside for us to load on the layers and head to Punxsatuwney to hunt him down (JK, PETA!). And if we were willing to stick our icy cold feet into a pair of still-wet-from-yesterday Uggs, there are a few other people we’d be going after first:

1. ABC: While the rest of the world is hating on NBC for the whole Conan debacle, I have a major bone to pick with the ABC suits. Canceling Ugly Betty? What the hell? That show has the humor of Glee, the high fashion of Gossip Girl and the drama of The Bachelor. Maybe if you didn’t change its airtime so much more people would know when to watch it and tune in!

2. Gisele Bundchen: The Victoria’s Secret Angel looks like this after having a baby in December (clearly this is a pattern with them, given the post-baby bodies of Heidi Klum and Adriana Lima). She also reports that she didn’t have to wear maternity clothes during the pregnancy. If that’s not enough to make you hate her, don’t forget that her husband and baby daddy is NFL hottie, Tom Brady. GAH! Read More »

Bringing Awareness to Eating Disorders

anorexia.jpgEveryone is busy talking about the Super Bowl this morning, but we’d like to take a moment to discuss a topic much more serious and important to our demographic.

February may be known for Groundhog’s Day, Black History Month and Valentine’s Day, but it is also the month of Eating Disorder Awareness Week. This week is a time to educate, inform, and talk about a serious issue that effects 8 million people (7 million of which are women ) nationwide.

This week, we will be talking about eating disorders and the effects they can have on you and the people around you.

We have brought in experts, survivors and others who have been touched by this awful mental illness to open a dialogue and, hopefully, help the people we care about get the help they need.
