TV’s Guiltiest Pleasures

On certain days when life is feeling pretty meh, or I’m too stressed out, I look to TV to cheer me up. Not to the critically acclaimed shows but to the trashy or mindless shows that make me zone out. Here are a few of my go-to guilty pleasures.

What are you TV guilty pleasures?! Tell us below!

My 10 Guiltiest TV Pleasures

Let’s be honest here, I’m a college student, so I’m not going to watch 60 Minutes (unless I catch the end of it because I’m waiting for Big Brother to come on). I’m going to fill my DVR with trash, just like I do with my body, mind and garbage can.

These shows are 100% guilty pleasures that I would NEVER admit to watching ALL THE TIME.  If someone walked in on me watching any of these shows, I would probably pull the whole, “OH THIS OLD SHOW?? I JUST HAVE IT ON FOR BACKGROUND NOISE! I SWEAR!”

Sick Day, Then and Now

After the love-bug graced us with it’s sappy presence for Valentine’s Day last week, it seems like a new bug has fluttered into the hearts (or sinuses) of many.  I have been stacking my pillows a mile high (so I can breath at night) and rushing out of class to blow my nose for quite some time now. While friends are going out to the bars, I’m surrendering with a tie blanket and Lauren Conrad’s new book (don’t judge – I’m sick). And when I make it to class in the midst of a blotchy-faced sneezing attack, I try to sit in the back so no one can hear my whistling nose and staggered breathing.

It’s a hard knock life, being ill. Especially at the age of 21, while attending college where you are hardly ever alone, and (I am convinced) the terms ‘Sunday Funday’ and ‘Thirsty Thursday’ were invented. It’s not like it used to be, back in elementary school, when you’d fake a cough just to stay home and enjoy that coveted sick day. Now, well, I really miss those sick days… Read More »

College Candy’s Guilty Pleasures Pregame Playlist

mixtape.jpgIt’s that time of year.  You know what I mean: the time when the little devil on your shoulder convinces you i’s totally okay to drive around with the windows down jamming  to your favorite iTunes playlists instead of attending lecture to listen to your prof blab on Peanuts-style about the Industrial Revolution.  Yes, it’s springtime!  We are in the home stretch, my friends.

So, in the spirit of doing things you know you shouldn’t do but probably will anyway, this week’s playlist theme is Guilty Pleasures.  You know what they are.  Guilty pleasures are those songs you really shouldn’t admit you like in a crowd and should probably only be listened to when you’re in the shower, or in your car alone…far, far away from campus and anyone you may know.

But since everyone likes cheesy songs when they’re drunk, I thought it’d be a perfect pregame playlist.

Just don’t tell anybody I made it for you.

Check it out here.

This Just In: We Watch a Lot of Bad TV

couchdm2405_468×312.jpg

The Nielson Company’s “Three Screen Report” is now saying that the average American is watching 151 hours of television a month, or about 5 hours a day. Couch potatoes everywhere are uniting around the remote to enjoy hours and hours of mindless, inexpensive fun. It’s so easy to get sucked in, so this increase is no surprise to me: just flick on the screen, flip through a couple channels and you are set for the night (or almost a third of your day, apparently).

But what boggles my mind is not the amount of TV we are watching, but the quality. Have you turned on your TV lately? Oh, wait – of course you have. For at least 5 hours a day. 90% of the stuff on there is mind numbing or trashy crap. Even I am embarassed by the dribble that’s currently clogging my DVR.

Knowing that people are spending more time watching any of these 10 horrid TV shows makes me nervous. With this stuff taking over our lives, our country is in for some (more) real problems. Read More »

The CC Weekly Weigh In: What’s Your Guilty Pleasure?

mini_cupcakes.jpgWe all have our weird habits. And we have all learned throughout our lives that it is best to keep those things hidden. I mean, no one needs to know that I end an evening at the bar with a 100 Calorie pack and a jar of peanut butter.

We were discussing these things the other day – our guilty pleasures – and wondered if we were the only ones who had em. I can’t possibly be the only person out there who dances around to Britney Spears in my underwear, right? Right?

In an effort to make ourselves feel better (or less weird), we asked our writers this week to share their guilty pleasures. The good news is: ours aren’t nearly as embarassing as we thought.

Kathryn S: The most dirty, vulgar songs ever recorded. I love listening to my “Perv Mix” on my ipod at that the gym: the little old ladies on the treadmill next to me have no idea that I’m listening to Blink 182′s “F*** a Dog” or Liz Phair’s “Hot White C*m.”

K – NYU: Singing in my car. Back in the glory days when I had a car and lived in a real place instead of Manhattan. “Invisible Touch” by Phil Collins is wayyyy up there, as well as “Escape” by Enrique Iglesias. Read More »

My Love/Hate Relationship With The New Millenium

billy.jpgVH1’s “I Love the New Millennium” premiered this week. Much like its fabulously entertaining predecessors mocking the 80’s and 90’s (sorry, the 70’s one predates me), it doesn’t fail to deliver laughs and amusing sound bites. Although I think I Love the New Millennium might be jumping the gun time-wise (they are discussing things that happened, like, last week!), I adore the short-attention-span-theater for the distraction-inclined:

Exploring all the pop cultural guilty pleasures, memorable products and people, disgraces and debuts, fads and fashions, scandals and sensations.

With clever and over-animated comedians dissecting and reflecting on everything from metrosexuals to Dance Dance Revolution to Sudoku, you can’t help but giggle at the off the wall and politically incorrect observations. In honor of the show, I decided to take a yummy walk down pop-culture memory lane from 2000-2004. Here are some of my personal favorite memories from the new millennium…and the ones I despise.

New Millennium Favs:

Napster- The inspiring illegal innovation that started it all. Thank you, Shawn Fanning, for changing the musical and digital landscape.

Uggs- I don’t care how hideous they are and how far-gone the trend is, these babies keep my tootsies toasty on the way to class or, if I’m feeling really lazy, at the bar. Read More »
