Why Exercising May Make You FAT

woman-exercising.jpg Most of us drag ourselves to the gym every other day or so not because we like it, but because we’re determined to keep extra pounds away and stay healthy.

Hell, I don’t wake up in the early morning, walk four avenues, and make myself sweaty on the elliptical because it’s fun—I do it because I have to.

Which is why I was super pissed (I mean, honestly, pissed) to read an article that was originally published in New York Magazine.

Why am I so mad? Because the article insinuated working out does nothing but make us hungry.

Without denying that 30 minutes a day on the Stairmaster is good for our health, journalist Gary Taubes recently explained that “most studies on the link between swimming laps and losing weight demonstrate little beyond one widely accepted fact: “exercising makes us hungry.”” Even more annoying, Taubes points out “exercise may even lead to a weight gain.”

According to Taubes, Jean Mayer, a nutritionist and “physiological chemist”, invented the “myth” of exercise being directly related to weight loss.

Taubes claims Mayer’s facts were “often contradictory”, but somehow his words caught fire with the American public and have stayed with us ever since. Read More »

The Butt Facial: I Should’ve Been a Beautician

butt facialWomen love to pamper themselves. You know it, I know it, the American people know it. Hell, even I’ve hit up the spa on occasion to see what all the fuss is about.

But isn’t there a point when all this narcissistic pampering goes a little too far? By all accounts, the answer is a resounding no. Want proof? Apparently, the hip new trend to hit spas across the country is the butt facial. Yes, you read that correctly. The Butt Facial.

Now, I’ve never gotten, or even born witness to, an actual facial, so I’m not exactly the resident expert here. From what I can gather, the method for facializing (is that a word, and if not, can we make it one?) the butt is almost identical to that of getting an actual facial.

There’s quite a bit of cleaning (ultra-important where the butt is concerned) with a dash of detoxifying (not sure at all what that does, but it sounds healthy enough).

But I guess the real catalyst behind the butt facial craze is the second half of the process, which involves a type of electro-shock therapy designed to reduce cellulite and increase butt firmness.

The deafening silence you’re hearing now is the sound of every one of my readers jetting off to the nearest spa.

Unfortunately for the “regular” people among us, the procedure is running customers upwards of $800 a pop. Heyyy…welcome back everyone! Read More »

Punching in the Name of Love

couple boxing

Have you ever thought to yourself, “gee, my boyfriend is being an ass. I sure wish I could punch him in the face without getting arrested”?Well, now you can. And if he wants, he can punch back.

According to the New York Times, young couples are beginning to get into the boxing ring together, sparring against each other for exercise and respect. While most men don’t jab back (or jab very lightly), women are routinely allowed and encouraged to beat the crap out of their mate. Read More »

End of Summer To Do List

summer beachAs we all well know, summer is ending. No more long days at the beach and long nights at the bar. Instead, it is time to head back to school where you will spend long days on the couch and long nights at the bar.

Oh, and you will probably be studying too.

Anyways, don’t head back just yet; there are still plenty of things that you must do before packing up your Yaffa blocks and moving back to the dorms.

Since I will not be returning to school this Fall (though grad school is starting to look mighty tempting), I have compiled a list of 5 Must-Do’s before its time to crack those books:

1. The Summer Fling - Three months have gone by and still you haven’t had some good ole commitment-free summer fun? Forget those standards; just get out there and get some. With only a few weeks until you move away again, “commitment” won’t even come up in conversation. But wild nights of romping will definitely be had.

2. Treat Yourself - If you have spent your summer working some crappy job/internship, it is time to give yourself a little treat. Maybe a facial or a massage. Or those oh-so-fabulous jeans you see in every magazine. Or maybe, if you are really feeling frisky, one of these bad boys. Read More »

Male Models? This Woman Wants Her Men Fat!

fat_man_image_186262a.jpg

Here at CollegeCandy, we like ourselves a good man. Someone hot, smart, funny…fat? That last word is probably not on many of our “Things I Want in a Guy” lists, but at least one woman is speaking out about her love of the Corpulent Man.

European author Tobsha Learner is in love with a “voluptuous” man.

Describing him as “Paddington Bear with dangly bits”, Learner explains that her man’s weight—and his apparent acceptance of it—makes him much more alluring than the “fatless, hairless, allure-free atheistic” many male models and celebrities carry around these days. Read More »

I’m Bringing Sex(y) Back to the Gym

My new obsession is the gym. Yeah, I’d love to lose a little weight and get into shape but my main motivation to go is because I’ve actually turned going into the gym into yet another way to be around cute guys. I’ve devised a strategy to getting to the men that I want all while looking super cute in my new gym gear.

Area 1 – Know you’re surroundings. The cardio area is for bitches. Yeah, I’m a girl…I know this…and I’ll do my 30-40 minutes on the elliptical, but do your thing and MOVE AWAY from the stair master. No men here.

Area 2 – Now that you’re good and slightly sweaty, let’s move into the weight-lifting area. Now this really depends on each individual’s “type.” I like the big, brawny, all-American men and this area is exactly where you will find them. Read More »

Today’s Workin’ Out Playlist

hot-pink-nano2.jpgIf I forget to bring my iPod to the gym, I lose all motivation, talk myself out of my usual 30 minute run on the treadmill and proceed to eat unneccessary amounts of junk food.

Hey, I need rockin’ tunes to get me going. Which is why I always update my playlists, so that I can get excited about hitting the cardio machines.
