How to Cut and Style Bangs for Naturally Curly Hair

For years, I wanted bangs. I longed for them. I coveted them. I desired them. But the answer from my hairstylist was always the same: NO. So in 2008, I cut them myself. Years later, I have a love-hate relationship with them. I keep cutting ‘em, growing ‘em in, and cutting them again. But I want to tell you this: curly-head bangs can be HOT.

This week, I’ve gathered photos from across the web to show you how it can be done. Whether you want curly bangs, bangs you have to straighten (which we’re so not used to, since our curls are so naturally gorge!!), or you’re ready to grow them out, here’s the how-to!

Waves are great. But I’m not talking about the beach, which I love. Minus the sand. And sea critters. And old men in Speedos. Whatever. Waves are always in, and there are oh so many ways to style them. You can do the beachy surfer girl crunch, the old Hollywood glamour, the pincurl wave, or this: the loose wave.

We’ve seen ‘em on everyone, like Lauren Conrad, Laura Preppon, and all of the Victoria’s Secret Models. And now you can have those perfect, laid back waves, too. They may seem difficult to master, but they’re not. It only takes a little bit of time and patience. And if you happen to burn yourself with your curling iron like I do all the time, I won’t judge you.

So, I’ve got your tutorial for these awesome loose waves. This is definitely my go-to style and maybe after this, it will be yours too!

CC Beauty Live: Wrap Around French Braid

We love braids here at CollegeCandy. I mean, who doesn’t? They’re cute, easy, a great fix for frizzy hair, and sophisticated. Unless you’ve got the Pippy Longstockins thing going on. Don’t do that. There are a zillion braid variations that all have the same basic idea, but some can be a little tricky.

Enter: the wrap around French braid.

Don’t worry, I am about to show you how to make this happen. I spend a lot of time in front of the mirror trying to figure out how to do these braids. Sure, I could watch videos or look it up, but I do it for you! And it gives me an excuse to ignore my other responsibilities. But I digress. Braids are perfect for summer, but this braid has a special place in my heart. Why? Because it wraps around and keeps your hair off of your neck! That way whether you’re laying out, walking around town, or going out at night, your braid won’t be sitting on the back of your neck getting all gross. Problem solved.

Braids have taken a turn from that hip, surfer girl look to a sophisticated, romantic style. And everybody’s wearing them. There are so many fun things to do with braids, like the small side braid into a ponytail, the braided bun, the two braids as a headband, and more.

Those are all well and good (and a great way to deal with that messy hair when you’re running 15 minutes late to class in the morning), but once I saw this French side braid, they all paled in comparison. I’m in LOVE. (In fact, I’m longing for lengthy locks so my own side braid will look better!)

This braid is just as simple as the rest, but the placement is a little different. So watch the vid and find out how it’s done!

A beach babe can’t be beachy without rocking wavy hair! As much as I would love to hit the beach every day (and therefore get beachy-wavy hair), most of us, myself included, don’t have the resources or time to do so! So here are some tips to help you create perfect beach waves without a trip to the seashore.

Prep:

The key to beautiful beach waves is minimal frizz, which can be especially hard for those of us living in humid climates. To keep frizz at bay, make sure your hair is as moisturized as possible! A great way to do this is by using deep-conditioners. Great deep conditioners that I’ve used include Garnier Fructis Haircare Fortifying Deep Conditioner 3 Minute Masque ($7.79 at drugstore.com) and Joico K-PAK Intense Hydrator ($12.83 at Buy.com). These will keep your hair healthy, shiny and frizz-free!

Notes:

- If you have color-treated hair, do not use any products containing sea salt! Products with this ingredient will make your hair color fade much quicker.
- We all have different hair! I’ve tried to outline products that will work for most hair types, but if you’re curious about a product that I didn’t recommend for your hair type, make sure to check review sites like makeupalley.com for other reviews.

CC Beauty Live: The Side Braid

You’ve all seen it: the side braid. Supposedly made infamous by Lauren Conrad, this look has been seen on red carpets, runways and LA sidewalks alike. I don’t give Ms. Conrad credit for this hair gem (or the books she’s “written”), but I can show you how to do it.

Disclaimer: Being able to do a side braid does not guarantee a hit reality show based on you doing nothing, or a crappy, watered down fashion line in Kohl’s stores across the country.

Now that I have that out of the way, let’s get braiding. And don’t need to be intimidated by the French braid! Just keep your cool and practice; come Summer, you’ll have the perfect day-to-night ‘do down pat.
