If you’re anything like me, you’ve been day-dreaming of chugging margaritas on the beach as your toes go numb on the long and snowy walk to class. Spring Break could not come soon enough and many a student has been counting down the days until they leave for those sandy beaches (I’m talking to you, girl who’s been updating her status every day since September).
But while many view the traditional MTV Spring Break as an essential, critical, and irreplaceable college experience, lately girls have been unpacking their bikinis and trading them in for work boots all in the name of Haiti.
I don’t have to remind anyone (I hope) of the disaster that struck there just a month ago. Officially considered the largest earthquake ever recorded, the death toll is estimated between 212-230,000 civilians. That’s equal to the deaths that resulted from the 2004 tsunami in southern Asia. That number is not only shocking on its own, but it makes it one of the two most horrific natural disasters to happen to North America in the last ten years (yes, Haiti is part of North America!), the other being Hurricane Katrina. And just as special Spring Break programs were created to allow high school and college students to travel to New Orleans and help with disaster relief, there are plenty of programs out there for Haiti. Big plans tonight? Hittin’ the town?
Maybe you should reconsider and stay in to watch the most epic musical event ever, while also doing a little good for those in need.
You’ve probably already heard everyone talking about tonight’s “Hope For Haiti Now” telethon, which aims to raise money for the victim’s of last week’s devastating earthquake, but do you have any idea how huge this thing is going to be? I’m pretty sure there has never been a lineup like this one. Read More »

While the Golden Globes were pretty entertaining last night (what’s funnier than watching celebs make fun of each other and take serious jabs at NBC), the true magic of the show began a few hours before Ricky Gervais (be still my heart) took the stage. And that magic is better known as the Red Carpet.
When it came to the fashion choices last night, the celebs pulled out all the stops…and hairspray, as they had to brave the showers to make an appearance on the red carpet. Of course, despite the rain, they all (well, almost all) looked amazing (I’m looking at you Mariah Carey!). And the fact that they could look so beautiful while showing support for Haiti just made the couture dresses all the more fabulous in my little eyes.
There was a whole lot of awesome on the Red Carpet. From Jane Krakowski’s gorgeous purple frock to Courtney Cox workin’ it in basic black, it really was hard to find a dress I didn’t like. But, as always, the beauty is really in the details, and there were some really breathtaking details on display. Below are a few of my favorite bits and pieces from the Golden Globes Red Carpet. Click on the picture to see the deets at work in the overall look! Read More »

Here’s a quick refresher: On January 13, 2010 (just two days ago), a 7.0 earthquake hit Haiti, devastating the country, crumbling their buildings and killing an estimated 50,000 people. Right now, Haitians have nothing: no food, no water, no shelter. Even their government has been destroyed, almost to the point of anarchy, according to some news reports.
You’ve seen the pictures, the videos.
The situation is bad. Really, really bad.
But there is one thing Haitians do have and that’s hope for outside help. Giving back is really important to us at CollegeCandy, and there has never been a better time to do so. Therefore, we are pleading with all of you to take a moment, educate yourselves on the dire situation in Port-au-Prince, and help. Read More »

According to the World Bank, global food prices have increased by 75% since 2005 and 45% in the last nine months. In the past two months, the cost of rice, a staple food for over half of the world’s population, rose by 75%. The price of wheat has risen 120% during the past year.
Deadly protests and rioting over these increasing costs are occurring throughout Africa and Asia.
In Haiti, where 80% of the population survives on less than $2 a day, mass demonstrations turned deadly. Rioting in Les Cayes killed 4 and wounded at least 20. A few days later Haitians attempted to storm the presidential palace in Port-au- Prince shouting “We are hungry!”
In Egypt, where over 33% of the population live on around $2 a day, police took over a textiles plant to prevent a widespread strike over rising food costs. The military has been enlisted to bake bread to curb the growing anger. Read More »
