Halle Berry’s custody battle with ex Gabriel Aubry is getting ugly. The couple’s nanny has accused Aubry of being abusive toward his daughter Nahla, and now the L.A. County Department of Children and Family Services is recommending that the three-year-old go to counseling. Things sound pretty rough for Nahla, and she’s not alone.

In honor of Women’s History Month, CollegeCandy has decided to spotlight some of the world’s most influential women. First, naturally, we focused on the women from our generation. Then, we highlighted some fierce females in their 30s.This week, we pay attention to some of the most amazing forty-somethings. These are the women that show us life really does get better as you age, whether you’re a famous movie star or activist. Anything can happen, and just like these women have done in their 40s, we can make a difference in the world at any age.

This week, the Golden Globes happened along with a lot of other fun stuff! Celebs got pissed, celebs got engaged, celebs broke up, and some celebs even had secret babies! All in all, a well-rounded week, I’d say.

Back To The Semester Parties

1. You’ll probably never see Ricky Gervais at the Golden Globes again. Despite the fact that he did a hilarious job of hosting the Golden Globes, which would have been utterly dull without him, Ricky Gervais’s jokes are being slammed by the majority of Hollywood. Why? I guess because he made fun of both Angelina Jolie and Johnny Depp within the first five minutes (I guess Hollywood royalty isn’t used to being picked on…), he trashed the members of the Hollywood Foreign Press, and according to some people, he just went ‘too far’ with the jokes he made about Robert Downey Jr., Bruce Willis, and Tom Cruise. There were tons of rumors that he was asked to never return – but apparently, Ricky has made that decision on his own. Can we pull the stick out of Hollywood’s Botox-injected butt, please?

2. Halle Berry is having baby daddy drama. She’s going into a custody battle with her ex, Gabriel Aubry, over their daughter Nahla. He wants to be officially declared the father, and wants joint custody of his daughter. Can’t really blame the guy, can you? Their break-up seemed pretty friendly, but let’s see what happens when the court gets involved.

3. Anne Hathaway had a great week – not only has it been announced that she’ll be making an appearance on Glee, but she was also cast as Catwoman in Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises. I guess we’ll find out if Anne has the vocal ability to hold her own on Glee, and the body to pull off that catsuit. All that and the fact that she gets to host the Oscars with James Franco AND got to make out with Jake Gyllenhaal for a movie makes me kind of hate her… and want her life.

4. Kanye West is PISSED. Earlier this week, the rapper made a little joke on his Twitter about Britney Spears: “I’mma let you be #1, but me and Jay-Z single is one of the best songs of all time!” Britney’s manager replied with, “Thanks for letting us be #1. Much appreciated.” The whole thing was obviously a joke, with Kanye kind of making fun of himself. But the media blew the entire thing out of proportion (WHAT? I know, that never happens), and Kanye was not very happy about it. He wrote a little blog about it, saying “This sh*t takes the air out of my lungs sometimes from blogs to news reports… enough already!!” Amen, Kanye. AMEN.

5.  Nicole Kidman had a secret baby. Kind of. She and Keith Urban welcomed a daughter born through a surrogate mother. No one knew it was happening, so it was pretty random. Too bad this didn’t happen last week, when everyone in Hollywood decided to get pregnant.

Back To The Semester Studying

1. Regis Philbin is retiring. He’s leaving his long-standing post as the host of Live! With Regis and Kelly. Everyone is already wondering who will replace him… but no one seems to be too surprised. That dude is OLD.

2. The Coachella 2011 lineup was announced. If you live in California or near this area, just know that I am extremely jealous of you. Set to perform are Kanye West, Arcade Fire, Kings of Leon, Lauryn Hill, Interpol, Neon Trees, Jimmy Eat World, Duran Duran, and soooo many more. Tickets are almost $300 for the 3-day concert, but it’s also an amazing celeb-and-music filled event that everyone should experience. Like I said… jealous, from cold New York.

3. Jake Gyllenhaal was spotted with Camilla Belle, and the dating rumors immediately flooded the Internet. It WAS kind of a weird coincidence that right after he breaks up with Taylor Swift, he was spotted with her reported ‘enemy’. Oh man, I can’t wait to hear this song.

4. Don’t worry, ladies and guys – Pauly D is still single, as is January Jones. January Jones and her boyfriend, SNL star Jason Sudekis, broke up this week. Honestly, I had no idea they were dating (shameful for me to admit as a gossip blogger), but that sucks because she’s beautiful and he’s funny. And if you were hoping to run into Pauly D at a club and make out with him, you still can. He denied that he’s dating both Chloe Sevigny and Brittany Gastineau.

5. Two more Hollywood engagements: Jodie Sweetin, former Full House star, got engaged. Aw, Stephanie Tanner! But I can’t say I’m happy for these other two – Jesse James and Kat Von D. Ew. You deserve each other. (Sandra, you’re so much better).

Can I get some Red Bull up in here? I’m majorly struggling right now. It’s like the crash that comes after eating a bag of Sour Patch Kids, only instead of sugar I was hopped up on sequins and cleavage and Brad Pitt’s sunglasses.

Yes, you know I’m talking about the glamour that was the Golden Globe’s Red Carpet.

Of course there are always lots of entertaining moments in the award show itself (Ricky Gervais was hosting, after all), but like most ladies with an eye for fashion, the true highlight of the show comes before it even starts. And last night’s show before the show did not disappoint. From the stunning shoes (I’m looking at your hidden feet, Olivia Wilde!) to the bright hues (word to your mother, Angelina) to the style doo doos (how else do you describe Christina Aguilera’s ‘fit?), the 2011 Golden Globes red carpet had me on the edge of my futon.

So after 3 hours of acceptance speeches during which I did some careful consideration (and drank a few glasses of Franzia), I bring you the best dressed, worst dressed, most WTF dressed and, just for fun, the sexiest men of the 2011 Golden Globes.

1. The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treaders. Starring Ben Barnes, Georgie Henley and Skandar Keynes.  The third adaptation of C.S. 1. Little Fockers. Starring Robert DeNiro, Ben Stiller, Owen Wilson, Teri Polo, and Blythe Danner. A follow up to Meet the Parents and Meet the Fockers. Laugh along as Greg, who has been married to Pam for ten years now, once again tries to redeem himself in the eyes of his father-in-law at his twins’ birthday party. Out December 22. 1. The Tourist. Starring Johnny Depp and Angelina Joie.  A romance turned thriller. Depp plays Frank, an America tourist attempting to mend a broken heart when he meets Jolie. He thinks their acquaintance is an accident. It’s not. Out December 10.  Watch the trailer here.

Halle Berry is a critically acclaimed, history-making, Academy Award winning actress. A former Bond Girl. A mother. And, obviously, a regulation hottie. She made super-short hair desirable. She’s always on “most beautiful/sexiest” lists. She inspires cheeseball novelty songs. She inspires spontaneous make out seshes at prestigious award ceremonies. At 44 years old, she is as fierce as stars 20 years younger as her.

Alas, while I don’t know how you can achieve killer bone structure or permanently incandescent skin, I can show you how to get one of Halle’s classic, sophisticated, sexy looks without maxing out five credit cards.

One of my absolute favorite things about fall, besides the pumpkin spice lattes and the boys in scarves, is the plethora of (faux) leather. The boots. The skirts. The bags. And of course, the jackets. What I love about this particular jacket are the ruffles, which add a glorious burst of femininity. Though this is one of the pricier items I’ve posted in this column, it is a total investment piece. Leather jackets (and ruffles) will never fall out of favor. Ever.

Halle decided to pair her leather jacket with a delicate lace top, which is one of this season’s trends. Lace and leather, when they’re both neutral colored and not too revealing, can easily be sultry and appropriate for daytime. Jeans dress this everything down, while the strappy platforms are simple but still very stylish. The oversized hobo bag adds another casual touch, and the pearl and chain necklace is perfect because it encapsulates the girly-yet-edgy motif of the outfit. Halle Berry’s style is proof that sexy is timeless…now if only I could steal her ability to constantly bag sexy model-actors as easily as I can steal her style…

But the article’s vocabulary isn’t the only baffling thing about it. In the piece, author Shane Watson proposes that all women have a “fashion sex,” a sort of gendered style that comes naturally to them.

Confused? So was I. Watson tries to explain herself by pinpointing the “fashion sexes” of some celebrities: “Anyone can see that Scarlett Johansson is a Girl, who should stick to asset-flaunting bodycon dresses” (whatever those are), she writes, while Kristen Stewart is “a tomboy through and through” whose outfits should never clash with her “natural urge to look a bit rough, undone, cool and … boyish.” Madonna is another celeb who Watson classifies as boyish: her “DNA is probably 12% bloke — in a good way. It’s the reason she looks like a man in drag in a pussy-bow blouse, but fabulously hot in a pair of chaps,” Watson writes.

I guess what this really means is that, according to Watson, women are innately either traditionally feminine, a little more hard-edged (read: manly), or androgynous. These traits are “non-negotiable,” she says, meaning that an inherently girly girl should never wear “the leather trousers, jacket and peaked-cap look” that serves Catherine Zeta-Jones so ill in the picture that accompanies the article.

Of course, the thing is that in that picture, Zeta-Jones doesn’t look uncomfortable or inappropriate. She’s Catherine-frickin’-Zeta-Jones—even if she hasn’t made a good movie since winning a Best Supporting Actress for Chicago, one thing she does have going for her is that she’s still one of the most beautiful women on the planet (and a very lucrative deal with T-Mobile). I think she would probably look smoking even if she was wearing a burlap sack and one of those big, furry Russian hats.

The notion of fashion sex is totally ludicrous; having short hair or, in Stewart’s case, a curiously surly demeanor (does that girl just not know how to smile?) doesn’t make a woman un-feminine—look at a pixie-haired Halle Berry in that famous Oscars dress, for just one example of why Watson is completely wrong. Hell, even K-Stew looked pretty, classy and, dare I say, comfortably girly at last week’s Oscars. So-called “boyish” types can look great wearing frilly dresses, and so-called “girly” types can look amazing in jeans and distressed Chucks.

Every girl should wear whatever she wants without fear that she’s somehow going against “type,” whatever that means. There’s no sense in pigeonholing yourself to just one kind of look, especially if you’re only doing it because some crazy British lady thinks you should.

Everyone’s got their celebrity/iconic role models. Some look up to Hillary Clinton for being such a strong, empowered woman. Some look up to Lady Gaga for being who she is, regardless of what other people think. Some may even look up to Tyra for proving that crazy people can get famous too.

Personally, I think all of those women are great (or crazy, in the case of the last one), but I have my own role models, whom I look up to for something very near and dear to my heart: sex. These women are all confident, beautiful, and not afraid to talk about sex. I have invited each of these women into my bedroom (their attitudes, at least)  and each has helped me enjoy sex and my own sexuality a whole lot more.

Halle Berry

Why She Rocks: She knows good sex and isn’t afraid to ask for it.

How She Inspired Me: I don’t have to be afraid of my sexuality; it’s OK for me to have needs and do what I can to fulfill them.

Jada Pinkett-Smith

Quote: “My husband and I always make time for sex! Always! No matter how busy we are. And if I told you the places! You would not even believe! It’s crazy the risks that we take, but that’s what keeps it so much fun.”

Why She Rocks: She proves that committed people don’t have to have boring sex lives.

How She Inspired Me: It’s easy to get caught up in the day to day stuff in a relationship, but Jada reminded me that we gotta make time to spice things up, otherwise things can go down hill quickly.

Meryl Streep

Quote: “The whole idea that you have to look a certain way and be a certain age to earn love is ridiculous. We love what we love. It doesn’t matter what shape it is. It’s thrilling to see real people on screen.”

Why She Rocks: She’s still doing sex scenes at 60 and she’ll probably be doing them for years to come.

How She Inspired Me: We’re all sexy – no matter what shape, size or age – and we just always need to remember that.

Goldie Hawn

Why She Rocks: If only all parents could be as open about discussing sex with their kids, maybe we wouldn’t have such high teen pregnancy and STD rates.

How She Inspired Me: No, Goldie didn’t have me running to my parents to ask about their sex lives. But she did get me to stop, take a moment, and appreciate sex for the beautiful, powerful and awesome thing that it can be.

Angelina Jolie

“All women do have a different sense of sexuality, or sense of fun, or sense of, like, what’s sexy or cool or tough.”

Why She Rocks: Angelina is one celebrity who was never afraid to speak honestly about her sex life, no matter how strange other people found it, and I admire her for that. She’s also remained sexy and confident while managing to be a great mom to six kids.

How She Inspired Me: Sometimes I’m afraid to try new things in the bedroom, but if Angelina can do it (and snag Brad Pitt), why not me?

Scarlett Johansson

Quote: “I’ve never had sex with Benicio Del Toro in a lift. It was a sarcastic quote that I unfortunately gave to a journalist. I said: ‘Apparently, Benicio Del Toro and I had sex in an elevator. He printed it, then all the tabloids took out the word ‘apparently’. I’ll be answering that question for the rest of my life.”

Why She Rocks: If only the Benicio story were true…

How She Inspired Me: I assume she’s had sex with Ryan Reynolds in an elevator without anyone finding out and that’s something I’ve always wanted to do…

All year long I look forward to award show season, the best time to see my favorite celebs hitting the red carpet looking all kinds of fabulous. Sure, I love seeing who wins the awards and what the “experts” consider the best movie of the year, but everyone knows the best thing about these award shows is checking out what everyone is wearing.

What a celebrity wears on the red carpet is usually the most important thing she can wear all year. It’s always fun to point out the what-was-she-THINKING? outfits, but looking at the most gorgeous dresses is always a pleasure that everyone can indulge in. That is exactly why the majority of the female population (myself included) will be sitting in front of the TV tomorrow night with a bowl of popcorn, drooling over each beautiful dress that struts by.

So who will work the carpet the best? Here are five starlets I know will be looking divine based on their glamorous appearances from Red Carpet’s past.

Penelope Cruz
This year, Cruz is nominated for Best Supporting Actress for her performance in Nine. She always brings the Latin heat, showing off her admirable curves in classic, tasteful gowns. Cruz is the picture of red carpet elegance, and never fails to disappoint.

Kate Winslet
Although Winslet is just a presenter this year and not nominated for an award, she is sure to still be a hit on the red carpet. Winslet brings old-school Hollywood glamour to any award show she attends in simple gowns that are still classically beautiful and perfectly flatter her body

Reese Witherspoon
As a presenter this year, Witherspoon is sure to bring a girly flair to the red carpet. Similar to Winslet and Cruz, she also wears elegant and tasteful dresses, but she adds a pop of color that always complements her and sets her apart, whether it be bright yellow or deep purple.

Halle Berry
Berry’s gowns are definitely never boring. She tends to choose dresses that are form-fitting without revealing too much – just enough so we can all continue to envy her body. She mixes it up with different colors and styles, and I can’t wait to see what she chooses this year as a presenter.

Emily Blunt
Nominated for Best Actress for her performance in The Young Victoria, Blunt is sure to wear something extra fabulous this year. She has mastered the art of looking refined and elegant while still looking a young and fresh. Plus, she’s always down for some sparkle, which I’m looking forward to seeing on the carpet this year. I’m also looking forward to seeing her finest accessory of all, fiance John Krasinski (sorry, couldn’t resist!).
