There are too many reasons to love Halloween. For one, you get to dress up like an absolute idiot — or a slut, whichever you choose — and no one judges you. Although, if you’re dressing like a slut, you might be fair game for some judgment but that’s a totally different issue. Not into dressing up? Wear all black and you’re still a goblin in disguise! You really can’t go wrong on Halloween. But, what I really love about this awesome holiday is ALL THE FREE CANDY YOU CAN GET YOUR HANDS ON. (I mean, it was totally way more acceptable to go door-to-door begging for candy when I was five but…whatever.)

Despite what some freaks people think, there are SO many great things about Halloween:

1. Candy corn.
2. Free candy (I don’t think there is a such thing as “too old to go trick-or-treating,” OK, mom?)
3. Pumpkin flavored EVERYTHING.
4. A legitimate excuse to dress like a whore. Yeah I said it. It’s the one night a year you can walk around exposing your Britney and no one gives you a second glance.
5. A hangover that lasts for days. Okay, so maybe that part isn’t so great, but earning that hangover is always majorly great.

And now there is one more thing to add to that “reasons to love Halloween” list.

Of the many things we college students love, the top three for most of us are burritos, cheap food and an excuse to dress up. Chipotle obviously got that memo because they’re offering all of the above… and for a good cause, no less!

This Sunday stumble in to your local Chipotle for a $2 (yes TWO DOLLAR) “Boo-Rito” (Ha! Get it?!). Lord knows you’ll be craving it in your hungover state from Saturday night’s festivities.

The catch? In order to earn your $2 grub, Chiptole is asking that you dress up as a horrifying, terrifying, run-for-the-hills processed food product. And just for dressing up as the scary food (that they are not!) they will give you a burrito, bowl, salad, or an order of tacos filled with freshly cooked, naturally raised ingredients, for only $2.

(Some Ideas: A Gusher, a bag of Doritos, a Twinkie, Easy mac… I’m sure you could find a way to make any of those slutty!)

And they aren’t just doing this to laugh at you dressed up as a disgusting chicken nugget – it’s for a good cause! Chipotle has set a goal to raise $1 million for Jamie Oliver’s Food Revolution. Which, might we add, we here at CollegeCandy LOVED last season. And so did the rest of the US of A, because a season two is in the works. Holllller for some celery!

Good, cheap food for a good cause to fix a baaaad hangover? Totally worth knowing about.

And, of course do not forget this little tidbit of informazione: the day after Halloween (this Monday) all Halloween candy goes on sale for C-H-E-A-P. I mean Walgreens practically gives away bags of candy corn (and every other chocolate that contains a Halloween themed wrapper)! Why pay $4.99 when you can pay less than a dollar for a 3lb bag of Reese’s indulgence?

Bring on the sugar high!

Halloween is just around the corner (!!), and while you’re probably still putting the final touches on your Gaga-getup have you thought about how you’re going to be celebrating? Yes, Halloween may just be another excuse to get drunk (or dress as a drink!) and gorge on candy but there are ways to get a little more into the spirit of Halloween then slapping animal ears over your favorite lingerie and calling yourself a cat.

Remember the fun days when your mom prepared disgusting looking food for your favorite friends? When you had to stick your hand into a box and feel something gross like slimy spaghetti? Just because you’re in college doesn’t mean the childish fun has to stop.

This year add some creativity to your Halloween celebration with a creepy cocktail or a spooky snack. Get your girlfriends together and make Skeleton Sangria – just each chip in an ingredient! Though it might seem kind of lame to bring a homemade snack to a party, maybe just make something to snack upon while you pre-game with your girls as you shimmy into your pantless outfits. Or, if you’re like me and have a midterm November 1 (some cruel joke, I KNOW!), take it easy with a creepy looking meal with some friends to avoid the Halloween hangover.

There are a lot of perks to experiencing Halloween as a college student, that’s a given. But remember Halloween as a little kid? When you looked forward to more than the drinking games and the slutty sexy costumes?

Sure, I loved the costumes, and the candy, and the pumpkin carvings, but for me it was really all about the movies. And not those crazy, creepy, scary ones either, but the fun ones. You know, the ones about friendly ghosts and clumsy witches and great pumpkins…
Allow me to refresh your memory…

10. Beetlejuice. Originally this one was going to be higher up on the list. But as I rediscovered the plot of this Halloween time horror, I realized it was actually kind of creepy. Way to get your big break though, Winona Ryder.

9. The Little Vampire. Think back, way back. Before Twilight. Before Edward Cullen. Before vampires were ever associated with glitter. Remember when you actually thought vampires were kind of scary? It made the idea of a little boy being BFFs with a vampire so much cooler.

8. Casper. The friendly ghost. The special effects may not seem as cool as they used to, but it’s still worth a re-watch. Upon looking this one up on IMDb I discovered there was actually a plot behind this movie. No, I’m not going to tell you what it was. Watch it; you won’t be disappointed.

7. Underwraps. A favorite in my household growing up. My brother was obsessed with it. And it didn’t help that the Disney channel aired it every other day that first year it came out. We watched it over and over (and over) until I knew the lines by heart. Never could quite get use to the fact that they named the mummy Harold, though.

6. The Nightmare Before Christmas. Come on. It’s Tim Burton. And a classic. And I don’t care what those brats are saying today, it will always be better than The Corpse Bride. End of discussion.

5. Double, Double Toil and Trouble. The Olsen twins have a movie for every occasion, and Halloween is no exception. Back in the day I couldn’t get enough of these two. But now I kind of wonder how Shakespeare would feel about Mary Kate and Ashley stealing his lines…

4. Halloweentown. Yes, another Disney channel original movie. But I can’t help myself. These people know how to do Halloween. After seeing this movie, I secretly hoped that one day I would “come of age,” and find out I had magical powers too. (Reading the Harry Potter books shortly after did nothing to help this notion disappear.)

3. The Worst Witch. My personal favorite. Poor Mildred Hubble, things never seemed to go right for her. But her life wasn’t all bad, I mean she had teachers named Miss Cackle, and Miss Spellbinder, and a cute little grey cat. And she had her own theme song…Mirror, mirror on the wall, who’s the worst witch of them all?

2. It’s the Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown. Charlie Brown, much like the Olsen twins, has a movie for every occasion, and unlike the Olsen twins, every one of his holiday specials is worth watching. Linus and Sally spend the night in a pumpkin patch. Charlie Brown gets rocks in his trick or treat bag, and Lucky is just plain mean. Business as usual.

1. Hocus Pocus. The best Halloween movie of all time. It’s a fact. The other night, one of my friends posted on Facebook that she was watching it. The status now has 28 comments, all with various versions of “best movie ever,” and “OMG I love that movie,” along with actual quotes from the movie. Plus, I’m sure I wasn’t the only one with a crush on Max, right?

So what do you think, ladies? Did I get all of your favorites? Which ones did I forget? There’s no limit on childhood memories. So dust off those VCRs, pull out those old VHS tapes, grab some candy corn and start reminiscing.

The planning and upkeep in preparation for the big night(s) is fierce. Girls have been known to have mental and emotional breakdowns due to the stress of picking a costume, making that costume, making sure the costume is sexy/cute enough, and also making sure that nothing naughty falls out of it. OK, maybe not a full on breakdown, but that’s probably because they self medicate with shots of tequila.

There’s a lot of prep work that goes into the perfect Halloween and the key to success is planning. You don’t want to wake up on October 29th without a costume and be forced to go as a naughty school girl…again. So use this calendar as a countdown to Halloween; stay on track and you’ll be good to go come October 31st (or 25th if you like to celebrate all week long!) sans breakdown. You’ll look amazing, have a great time, and increase your chances of making out with Batman at a party.

October 8-10: Costumes, Costumes, Costumes!
This weekend, figure out what you want to be for Halloween, whether you are going solo or doing a group thang with your girlfriends. Peruse the Halloween stores, hit the internet for inspiration and settle on something. If it requires ordering, get on that now!  You want to make sure that it has time to ship and that it fits. (Note: Yes, showing a little butt cheek does count as fitting. It is Halloween, after all.) If you are making your costume, go out and pick up all the goods. It always takes longer to piece that thing together than you think and you don’t want to have to run out the night of Halloween when you realize you don’t have enough fabric to cover your nips.

October 11-17: Clean (up) Your Plate!
Showing off your belly on All Hallows Eve? Does that Lady Gaga meat dress show off too much cellulite on the thighs?  This week, start cutting extra cookies, beers, candy, and pizza out of your daily diet. I’m not saying you have to lose weight, but I am saying that you’ll be a lot more comfortable in your skin (which is all that will be showing) if you feel your best. And that means eating healthy!  If you want to, start adding more veggies, lean protein, and whole grains to your daily diet, and cut back on the stuff that isn’t as good for ya. (Except candy corn – that is totally acceptable.)

October 18-23: Work It Out!
Keep it up with the gym routine and don’t forget to add toning exercises! Abs, arms, legs – everything has to look tight. Follow up those workouts with a Pumpkin Spice Latte (with skim milk!) and some old-time Halloween traditions. P.S. Keep working on that costume!

October 24: Test Run!
Try on your costume(s) to make sure everything is working right and figure out your hair and makeup. Think of this as a dress rehearsal. Just don’t show that costume to too many people! Halloween is all about the surprise, so you don’t want to ruin it by prancing around campus a week early.

October 25: Final Details!
Figure out your pre-gaming plans (including which awesome drinking games you will be playing!), stock up on the booze, and finalize which parties you will be attending on the big night. Oh, and a giant bowl of candy on the coffee table isn’t a bad idea either.

October 26-28: Investigate!
Go undercover and find out what other people are going to be. The last thing you want is to show up at the party and find 12 other Snooki’s dressed exactly like you. Tweak your costume as necessary. Enjoy a Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup. Hit the gym. Enjoy another Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup.

October 29: Time to Rock and Roll!
Yeah, it’s not actually Halloween, but it’s a Friday night so it’s time to start the party. So, get ready to go. Shave EVERYWHERE (cuz it’s all gonna be showing, especially if you take Batman home to show him your bat cave),  charge your camera, drink lots of water, eat a giant bowl of noodles with a side of breadsticks and get ready to pre-game.

Chase those shots with some candy corn pumpkins (just not too many – that sugar will make you ill) and you’re ready for the perfect Halloween!

October 30th and 31st: Repeat!
Pound some Powerade, eat a breakfast sandwich, spruce up that costume (wipe off the spilled sangria, sew up that hole from when you fell in the street…), and do it all again.

Halloween has always been one of my favorite holidays. I could never understand what wasn’t to like. All the store windows are covered in cotton cobwebs and fake skeletons, people hand you free candy everywhere you go and you can dress up as absolutely anything and walk around in public without being judged. Did I mention the free candy?

It doesn’t matter whether you’re seven or 21, this holiday rocks. What changes, though, is the reasoning behind your excitement. Clearly, we spend the holiday a little differently now then we did back then.

Then: It gave us an excuse to have a party during math class.
Now: It gives us (a valid) excuse to party for a week straight.

Then: We grabbed the biggest bag we could to load up on candy.
Now: We grab biggest burrito we can to load up on carbs to coat our stomachs for the festivities.

Then: We dressed up as our favorite Disney princess.
Now: We dress up as our favorite Disney princess… minus 7 inches of fabric.

Then: “I’ll give you two Kit Kat’s and a nerd rope for that giant Hershey bar!”
Now: “Why don’t we go back to my place, Sexy Police Officer?”

Then: We weren’t allowed to take candy from strangers.
Now: We’ll take a drink from anyone.

Then: When we got home, mom would undress us and we’d eat a little candy.
Now: When we get home, “sexy police officer” undresses us and we get a little lucky.

Then: Your mom sent pictures of you and your siblings dressed up to grandma.
Now: Your mom calls and asks you to take down the Facebook photos of you dressed up like a hooker before grandma sees them.

Then: We packed our lunches full of the best candy the next day to show off to our friends.
Now: We pack our bra into our purse… and avoid our friends on the Walk of Shame home.

While Halloween now is more closely associated with finding a (slutty) costume and drinking Halloween inspired beverages, as a kid, there was nothing better than going door to door loading up on enough candy to last you till the 4th of July.Only problem is, my mom – the smart woman that she is – knew her life would be torturous through July if she let her three hyper children keep that much sugar around.

So every year, my two older brothers and I would have to dump all of our coveted, prized candy into the middle of the table. My mother then carefully separated the candy into piles – Milky Ways in one pile, Twix in another, Candy Corn in another, and so on. She then handed a bucket to each of us and, one by one, we would go around taking our pick and filling our buckets.

Once they were filled, the rest of the candy went to inner-city kids whose neighborhoods were too dangerous to trick-or-treat in (which now I see was a very noble thing but at the time I couldn’t understand why they deserved my candy gold. After all, I spent three long hours in the cold with clown makeup on my face, saying stupid poems at people’s doors while they filled my bag up with all that deliciousness).

Going around that table, each taking our turn, made our piles of crack candy like a game of Monopoly. 100 Grand (because of its rarity) was like Park Place, while Apple Sauce (I mean really WHO GIVES OUT APPLE SAUCE ON HALLOWEEN?!) was like Baltic Ave. Having spent so much time pouring over every. last. piece of candy, I think I’ve become somewhat of an expert. So, I bring you my list of the all time Top 5 BEST Halloween Trick-or Treat Treats.

1) 100 Grand: It’s like a Nestle crunch bar meets a Milky Way meets Amazingness.

2) Peanut Butter Twix and Peanut Butter M&Ms. No explanation needed.

3) Double Stuffed Oreo’s with the Bright Orange Frosting. I’m not even sure if they make these anymore, but nothing says childhood like playing the Oreo game.

4) Skittles. The non chocolate version of M&Ms. Note to self: Don’t stick them up your nose…

5) Whatchamacallits. Mainly because I love the name and still find it slipping into my vocabulary. You know, while playing games of Concentration or jumping around on my Skip-It.

And an honorary spot has to go out to any big candy bar given. Those houses were the BEST. They were few and far between, but they were total jackpots. I bet if you drove through your old neighborhood now you could point out the houses that gave out the full sized Snickers.

Oh and I totally ate those before I got home, or hid them in my room… it took too much room up in the bucket and there was no way those other children were getting their paws on that treasure.
