You know you’re now singing “MMMBop” in your head; you’re welcome. Hanson was huge in the 90s with their first album Middle of Nowhere, and their silky, golden locks had us going wild. In the midst of the ‘NSYNC-Backstreet Boys era, the brothers Hanson were a nice surprise. I mean, they were hot brothers. That could sing. And play instruments. We loved them, but they fell off the radar as boy bands often do. Now they’re all married with children, but that hasn’t stopped these boys men from making music. They’ve released several albums including one in 2010 called Shout It Out and their promotional concert started a riot.

Well, I hope you’re ready for this nugget of joy. You can now get drunk off Hanson as Isaac, Taylor, and Zac have created a beer brand called “MMMHop” and it will probably bring music to your ears when you drink it. It’s an Indian Pale Ale and will be available next year. Hanson if you’re reading this, we’d love some samples. Now I can’t help but think of other beer flavors 90s stars could come out with…

Ah, the ’90s. A tacky but wonderful time. And there’s nothing better on a hot summer day than a blast from the not-so-distant ’90s past. Ever wonder what happened to some of those artists that you used to play over and over again on your Walkman? Well bust out your old CD (not mp3) collection, because you’re about to find out.

Boy-bands: back in the ’90s, we were their biggest fans. We rocked out to every one of their songs, hung posters of their seemingly perfect pre-pubescent faces on our walls, and daydreamed of our secret romances with them. That inevitable feeling of nostalgia whenever we hear a classic Hanson song, or relive the “Battle of the Acrobatic Boy Band Videos” (featuring none other than *Nsync and the Backstreet Boys). I must admit, I was always a bigger BSB fan, and was secretly screaming like a tween again when I heard they were going on tour this summer!

So what are our other favorite boy bands up to these days? Let’s take a trip down memory lane with our Where Are They Now: 90s Boy-Band Edition.

Look for the long-haired-yet-somehow-sexually-appealing boys of Hanson; the A&F marketing team LFO; the wannabe Backstreet Boys, 98 Degrees; and fan favorites Jesse and the Rippers.

Head straight on until you pass the clearance sale on Jellies and you’ll see our ultimate Girl Power Stage. And no, Spice Girls won’t be performing. They said no more tours once Baby hit 40. Instead we have an all-star line-up that kicks off with a heartfelt and realistic duet between Brandy and Monica followed by a tribute to TLC. Last but not least, the least sexually provocative of the ’90s girls, Mandy Moore, will take the stage.

Of course this is just a dream (hey it could happen!) and is totes not happening this summer. But I think we all would gladly take this kind of summer festival over the wannabe-hippie drugfest that is Bonnaroo and the somehow-still-selling-out Dave Matthews concerts. So here’s to hoping we can pull it together for 2011. If so, you’ll definitely spot me in the back with my devil sticks, wearing my signature blue dress with the stain that just won’t come out!

I get the picture, embarrassing things happen to the best (and most innocent) of us.

But in a college world where things need to be taken pretty seriously, you have to love and embrace them!  Why else wouldn’t the word ‘embrace’ begin the same way as ‘embarrassing?’ Well, the first three letters anyway.

Really, embarrassing moments are so much more than a shot to your ego, they are an opportunity to laugh at yourself (and others) if the time is right. They bring people together. They show us as we really are at our most vulnerable. And, when you look back, they’re really, really funny.

Getting caught ‘O-faced” singing to ‘One Time’ in your car.

I know it may be embarrassing when stranger Joe rolls up next to you at a stoplight and catches you belting the lyrics “Baby” by Justin Bieber like your love life depends on it. I mean, I may not be 15, or four feet tall, but I do have the pipes to share the empty space in my Ford Escort. And the personal concert I’ve held for myself on the way to class may have just brightened my entire day, whether or not Joe is pointing and laughing at me.

If you are having a bad day, pop up You Tube on your browser and go ape-crazy.  Videos of people falling may turn your cloudy day into a vibrant shining one. And nobody should turn down the opportunity for a giggle-fest study break.

When I trip and fall, usually, I mean business. I have scars and scrapes to prove it. And a 30-minute laugh session with my girlfriends while eating pie at Bakers Square the next day. I hadn’t laughed that hard telling a story since, well probably last night, but that is because I fall so much. Worth it.

Sharing an embarrassing story with your crush.

Whether or not it is recapping a super embarrassing drunken story, or a tid-bit about your relatives, nobody can get past blabbing absent-mindedly to your crush about something you will probably regret later.  But what you won’t regret later? Knowing that he’s sticking around for the long haul, even when you’re being yourself.

Listening to NSync/Backstreet Boys/Hanson on your downtime.

Whichever you prefer, boy bands are a universal guilty pleasure (at least in my opinion) and something you shouldn’t be ashamed about.  They send you back into adolescent teenage-hood where the answers of the dating universe are”Larger Than Life.” And have you ever been a part of a college-NSync-chorus via dorm room with your friends? Probably one of the best embarrassing things to admit to, ever.

Shake your bon bon. Raise the roof. Break it down.  Whatever it takes, no matter how embarrassing it may look, or if your favorite dance move is ‘the lawnmower’, it feels nice to let it all out. Have you ever heard the saying “dance to express, not to impress?”

OK, this may seem practical, cheap, and smart, but in college it is weird, lame, and boring. I suggest you try it sometime. It is embarrassing when the bartender looks at as if you told him you had a bomb but completely un-embarrassing when you aren’t the one hugging the porcelain God later, or telling your crush you love the way his hair looks in his Facebook profile picture.

I’ll admit it, I was captain of the Boy Band Train when I was a tween. I was a loyal BSB fan (that’s Backstreet Boys, for you non-fans) with a room full of posters, pins, pens, t-shirts, jackets, action figures (from their quick Burger King stint), and every single CD ever made. Ever. In fact, I was almost convinced I would marry one of them. It was my destiny.

Despite my loyalty to the Boys, I was still a fan a few songs here and there from rival bands like N*Sync, 98 Degrees, and Hanson. But now that I’m older (and still a BSB fan…it will never die), I listen to these songs and watch their videos and can’t help but chuckle at how cheesey they are. So here’s a list of the worst boy band songs that you have to love.

1) Even though I think BSB’s ish don’t stink, their first attempt at video making and being gangsta just doesn’t work. Thank god they decided to go down a different path. We tried to put the video here, but BSB must be pretty embarrassed by the performance because they won’t let us! Click here for “We’ve Got It Goin’ On.”

2) 98 Degrees had some pretty damn good hits. I’m still obsessed with “Invisible Man.” Nick’s voice is just so sexy, even though I thought little Drew was the hottest. But when they came out with “Give Me Just One Night (Una Noche)”, their stab at Spanish just killed it for me. I think I might have died a little on the inside, for real. 

3) I don’t think LFO had any other hit besides “Summer Girls,” but I remember that song like it was yesterday. I rocked out to it on my Discman with my BFF in 7th grade and we both wondered WTF Abercrombie & Fitch was. Now I realize that A&F is overpriced cotton and LFO lyrics are awful, but I will still get excited whenever this song comes on. “New Kids on the Block had a bunch of hits, Chinese food makes me sick….”

4) The second I hear the first beat in ‘N Sync’s “I Want You Back” (you know the…dun da da dun dun. Ok, nevermind.) I’m up and ready to dance. But check out this video; what were they thinking?! What’s with the metallic sheet floating in the wind? And the hair? And the dancing? Even though I definitely memorized the dance. I LOVE YOU JUSTIN!

5) Remember O-Town? No? They were the original Making the Band band, and they didn’t go very far. Sorta like Danity Kane… Maybe it was because of their first single “Liquid Dreams” was absolutely awful. It was just….weird. I mean, at its core, wasn’t it a song about “liquid” dreams? Ew. Sweet dance moves, though.

6) Ok, so I was a big Hanson fan. “MmmBop” was my favorite all through 5th grade. I still don’t entirely know what they are saying in the chorus, and I still make it up as I go along. But man was that a great beat. And the hair! Those guys had it all.

7 ) They definitely weren’t the greatest thing the U.K. ever gave us, but 5ive was definitely nice to look at. They were a one-hit wonder by definition with their naughty song, “When The Lights Go Out.” They did a great Disney special one year, though, so I made my dad buy me the album. He thought the song was funny; I thought it was genius. Till now. I don’t know – there’s just something weird about an English guy rapping. At the same time, there is something awesome about that song that you can’t help but sing along (and this one even has the karaoke words on the bottom!)

Can you think of any other classics?

After looking at smokin’ hot pics of Faith Hill, I started to get a little nostalgic for middle school and her super-catchy hit, “This Kiss.” So, I decided to craft my first weekly pre-game playlist around my memories of songs that I used to LOVE in middle school. I’ve tried to include a little bit of everything – from the classics like *NSYNC and Hanson to lesser-known one-hit wonders like Samantha Mumba. It’s crazy the different meanings I get from some of these songs now. Seriously…”MMMBop” is some deep sh*t!

If you’re looking for a playlist to share with a mixed crowd, this might not be your best bet. But if you’re chillin’ with a group of girls & ready to travel back to the 90′s with all it’s boy bands, flare jeans and glitter eyeshadow (and after a few drinks, who isn’t?) – then enjoy!
