It’s usually about mid-August, after a summer of humid hair messes and chaffing, I am begging Mother Nature to let winter come. I want to be able to not start dripping the second I step outdoors, I’m bored of all my summer clothes and overall just over the season in general.

When winter finally arrives, I’m happy as a clam. I’m looking forward to a solid three months of bundling up, celebrating holidays and the crisp winter air that comes with the drop in temperature.

But when we actually find ourselves knee deep in freezing temperatures (aka now), I find myself less than enthused at certain things that the season brings with it.

Don’t get me wrong – winter is still one of my favorite seasons and I’m enjoying everything it has to offer, but I always seem to forget the little annoyances that come along with the great stuff. While I love it more than anything, there are some things I’d be crazy to not be hatin’ right about now.

And then I started my personal list of the things I hate. I hate when people that are under the age of 40 call me sweetie. I hate the way Old Navy clothes NEVER seem to fit me right. I hate Perez Hilton. I hate when I carve out a spot in an aerobics class at the gym and some bitch comes in late and stands right. in. front of me. I hate that, no matter how hard I try, I can’t sound nearly as fierce or fabulous as Kingsley (I think that’s this fabulous guy’s name?) when I list off all the things I hate.

And now it’s time for the CollegeCandy writers to open up and let it all out. So, what gets their blood boiling?

Carly – Grinnell: 1. The sound it makes when people itch their legs with long fingernails when they are wearing jeans. 2. Fake friendliness. 3. The fact that the guy I have a crush on keeps inviting me to do things one-on-one with him but NEVER accepts when I ask him to do the same stuff. WTF?!

Lauren – University of Michigan: I hate when people want to have full-blown convos via text. And then when I try to call them (because it will take less time), they don’t answer. HELLO, I KNOW YOU ARE THERE.

Meg – University of Delaware: improper grammar. I cannot stand people who cannot speak their first language properly. It makes you sound uneducated.

Emmy – Loyola University Chicago: I hate that kid in my honors class who will not shut up, even when the professor cuts him off… And awkward encounters with exes. And when there is no Peach Mangosteen Snapple left in the campus store for me!

Kelly – University of Iowa: People who don’t pick up their feet when they walk; the noise is equivalent to nails on a chalkboard. Also, customers at work who think their group is the most important in the restaurant/bar and snap their fingers and yell while I am talking to other tables. They will get extra drinks added to their tab.

Noa – CU Boulder: I hate people who deliberately cough around me when I’m smoking to try and make a point, but not nearly as much as I hate people who use Facebook status updates to start political arguments. Or people who put up those vague status messages begging for attention. OMG, thinking about it is making my blood boil.

Lauren H – The New School: I’m not a grammar freak or anything, but people who don’t use subject-verb agreement (especially when they’re writing – spell-check, hello!) send me into psychotic, eye-gouging, teeth-gnashing rage. It’s just basic English!

Sarabeth – University of Texas: I hate it when the bus driver makes a stop at Subway to get lunch and leaves us sitting there for 15 minutes. Way to be, Austin public transit.

Ricki – University of Michigan: I hate when people borrow your clothes and make you come searching for them.  Shouldn’t they be the ones working around your schedule?

Jessica – Delaware: I hate people who talk on the phone in the library. And warm vodka.

Nina – Michigan State University: I hate working inside while it’s hot and sunny out. I hate when your favorite jeans stop fitting you perfectly and you have to go through the whole process of finding another perfect pair (it’s always that one vintage pair you can never find again!). And I REALLY hate making great, awesome plans for the summer and then watching them fall through.

Norah – Drake University: You know how when professors go through their class rosters on the first day of the semester, they ask questions like, “Do you go by Andrew or Andy?” to figure out if any of their students go by nicknames? And someone always says something like, “Uh, I don’t care, either is fine.” That drives me crazy. How do you people not have a preference? This is your IDENTITY. What is more “you” than your name? This isn’t rocket science. Just pick one and go with it. (Perhaps I’m a little biased because my parents deliberately chose names that couldn’t be shortened. Just trying making a nickname out of “Norah.” It doesn’t work.)

Brittany – University of Saint Thomas: The phrase ‘no offense.’ Shiz gets me every time.

Brithny – Duke: When you order something that looks totally adorable online, but after you open the box, it’s the equivalent of a trash bag.

Caitlin – University of Alabama: I hate it when people say they’re going to call or text you and don’t do it. I also hate it when people say the word “moist.” Eww.

Ness – Sheridan: When my sick roommate leaves piles of used Kleenex around the apartment; it literally makes me feel like I’m going to puke. People who not only walk slow but also drag their feet. When people refuse to admit they’re wrong. People who just can’t carry on cohesive conversations, then get upset when you prefer not to talk to them. Maybe I just have a problem with people…

Christie – NC State: I’m just gonna say that I HATE people that stare at my boyfriend and check him out while he’s holding my hand. It’s like HELLO?! I’m not an iPod that he’s carrying around, I’m a person. A person with eyes and a foot that can go so far up your ass that it’ll come out your ear.

Dear Tuffy Luv,

My boyfriend is a racist. Not the kind that’s making racist remarks all the time, but he says things that I think are racist and then he says they’re just a joke. But it makes me really uncomfortable because it makes me feel like I’m a racist too because I’m not stopping him.

Should I keep dating my boyfriend? We’ve been together for a year and otherwise I really love him. He’s a really good guy, but when he says things like that I don’t know what to do.

Dear Carrie,

Well, you didn’t give any examples, so it’s hard to say. But here’s what Tuffy thinks:

I know it’s painful, but you gotta sit your guy down and tell him how you feel. Say, “Tommy (can I call your boyfriend Tommy?), Tommy, I don’t like the things you’re saying about [whatever group he's racist in the general direction of]. Where is this coming from?”

He’ll tell you why he feels that way toward whatever group. Hear him out. Let him say his thing. When he finishes (and really, you have GOT to let him say it all out loud), tell him why it upsets you that he says these things. Explain that you don’t think a group can be judged based on a stereotype (or a single example, or whatever it is that he tells you it’s based on) and that he’s welcome to his opinion, but that you can’t be a part of it and that you would appreciate it if he’d abstain from saying it around you.

And that really may be enough. If it’s just a racist joke here or there, and it’s only slightly racist, maybe you’re able to see it as his one bad quality and just forget about it as long as he keeps it to himself.

HOWEVER, this is only if you’re able to stomach his reason and/or are determined to stay with him. If he says something really awful or disgusting about why he’s racist, or even if he just gets defensive, I really do advise you to get the frog out of that relationship. How can you be with a bigot if you aren’t one yourself? His racism shows a complete lack of personal thought (he’s basing his opinions on someone else’s stereotype or perhaps just what he was told growing up) and a complete disregard for the rights and feelings of others. If this is something that bothers you, go find someone who doesn’t hate others for no reason.

Tuffy would get the frog out. But, girl, in the end, it’s no one’s call but your own.

You can’t be too hung over. You need to wake up and have no motivation. When having no motivation is actively painful, then you got a problem.

The best way to experience Groundhog Day is via video – you know, you really get that one crowning moment of groundhog perfection.

“If you pull a rodent out of a hole really fast, what do you expect it to do? It sh*ts all over the place.”

The anticipation and build-up for the evening mean it’s never as good as you expect it to be. And no matter how much planning you do and how much money you spend, New Year’s Eve always fails to be an extraordinary night. Just because it’s the last night of the calendar year, doesn’t mean it’s going to be any more fun than any of the others. Trust me.

Reason #1 I Hate New Year’s Eve: First of all, it’s essential that you plan ahead. If you don’t make your plans well in advance, you’re risking having nothing to do. Parties get booked up, your friends make other plans, and you’re stuck watching the ball drop with your parents. I don’t like planning ahead. What if I’m forced into deciding to attend a party and then something better comes along? What if, in November, I don’t know what I’m going to be in the mood to do in December?

Reason #2 I Hate New Year’s Eve: Then there’s the expense. If you want to go out, you’re going to have to spend money, and probably a lot of it. Take last year, for example. A group of my friends made plans to go to a bar. We dished out the $75 that would allow us access to an open bar, bought fancy dresses, and got all decked out for the night of our lives. When we arrived, the bar was absolutely disgusting, the food nasty, and the people incredibly sketchy. It turned out we were only allowed to drink well liquor (when we could get near the bar). It also turned out that we could have paid $10 at the door and been allowed to attend the same party and order our own drinks. As if I would drink $65 in Grey Goose. The bottom line is that bars can charge whatever they please on New Year’s Eve and people will pay it. People like me.

Reason #3 I Hate New Year’s Eve: Midnight is just awkward if you’re single. When you’re single on New Year’s Eve and the clock hits midnight, you are left with only a few options. You can: a) Use this opportunity to hide in the bathroom and pretend you don’t realize it’s midnight, b) Participate in a group hug with all your other single friends, assuming you have any, or c) Kiss the guy closest to you, who may or may not be a huge freak. As you can see, none of these options are very appealing.

Reason #4 I Hate New Year’s Eve: It’s freezing out. You want to wear a cute dress and heels, but you’re going to freeze your butt off in the freezing, snowy cold. This is never fun. I’d rather be wearing sweat pants. In my bed. With a bottle of champagne.

This year, I’m giving it one more try. My friends and I made our plans in mid-November and are spending even more money this time. We have determined that by spending $110 to attend a party at a classy bar, we’re guaranteed a good time. Of course, we’re wrong. And it will probably be miserable. And next year we’ll go through the same thing all over again. Only it will be more expensive.

Pass the champagne, please.

I have a love/hate relationship with David Beckham.

I love him because: he’s f-ing hot, he plays soccer, his abs are ridonkulus.

I hate him because: I can’t have him, he’s almost too perfect.

Not anymore! Becks has a flaw (besides the fact that he’s taken): fishy breath.

Is it weird that I love him more for it? I mean, let’s be honest – would you toss this guy out of your bed because of a slight breath issue?
