The Brazilian based godmother of the flip-flop industry, Havaianas, is preparing to launch their 2011 fall shoe collection, The Soul Collection. I browsed their look book for the fall season and the company has definitely worked hard to create a line that combines their original design as well as the hottest trends this season.

Relying on the comfy marshmallow sole to keep feet and toes happy all day long, the exterior design of the shoe changes drastically as you move from style to style. Each style showcases a different color aesthetic: color blocking, blending and canvas, as well as Jute fibers that embody the spirit of the Amazonian culture in Brazil.

No matter which style catches your eye, each and every Havaianas shoe is created around the iconic marshmallow sole, which is made to feel like you’re wearing your flip-flops year round! While it sounds too good to be true (uh, who doesn’t want to wear flip-flops all year?) it’s not; traditional Havaianas pricing rages anywhere between $38 to $70 dollars.

You wake up for class and something is different. It takes you a moment before you realize that – OH MY GOD! – there is sunlight coming into your room! It’s not dark or dreary out!

You pull back the shades (or sheet you’re using as a shade) and let the light in. Your mood is instantly lifted.

You skip to the bathroom to take a shower and hum a little tune to yourself as you lather up. While you blow-dry your hair (no ponytail today!) you plan out your first-day-of-Spring outfit: new bright cardigan, new jeans and – YIPEEEEE – flip flops! They come in all different colors, styles, and sizes. They’re a part of our daily uniform during the summertime (Editor’s Note: And if you’re me, they stay in rotation until the snow begins to fall); we wear them to the beach, to work, or when we’re just hangin’ out in the house. Some people may hate on flip flops, but they are truly god’s gift to mankind (after Channing Tatum and Coldstone Creamery, of course).

Seriously, after reading this you might wanna think twice before flippy flopping around town.

After testing some footwear, health scientists discovered that there were more than – are you ready for this – 18,000 bacteria on just one pair of flip-flops. Did you just look at your feet in disgust? Yeah, me too. But what is even more disturbing than the number of bacteria on your favorite footwear is the type of bacteria that consumes them. We’re talkin’ bacteria from fecal matter (that’s poo, ladies!), skin and respiratory germs, even bacteria that causes yeast infections and diaper rash. Oh, and the scariest? The potentially lethal germ, Staphylocaccus aurerus (AKA staph infection).

Dr. Philip M Tierno, director or NYU’s Langone Medical Center, said that these bacteria “can give you a serious infection like a boil, or more serious, it could possess toxins.  They can make you very sick or kill you.”

Whoa, whoa, whoa; slow down there, Dr. Tierno. Does this mean I should fear my Havaianas more than I fear those creepy flasher guys that hide in parks when I go running?

Well yes and no.  The dirty grounds that we walk on (think about it: city streets, public bathrooms, etc.) contain a whole lotta nasty-I-don’t-even-wanna-knows on them, and since our feet are completely exposed when wearing flip flops, our skin is obviously coming in contact with ‘em. And sometimes those germs are lethal. So, what do we do about this?

Instead of ruining a cute summer dress with a not-so-cute pair of sneakers, just be wary and protect yourself:

- Avoid touching your flip-flops and your unwashed feet
- Wash your hands often
- Remove your shoes when you are in your home.
- Limit your use of flip-flops if you can.  I know it’s devastating, but try and save them for the beach and the pool, and wear more protective sandals for your daily wear.
- Toss those flips after a year. Yes, even those Rainbows.

Considering that flip-flops aren’t the best for walking anyway (they give you zero support and can injure your feet and calves) this new bacteria news might not be something to ignore.  Hey, if nothing else, it’s a good excuse to go shoe shopping, right?

While hoodies don’t exactly have a rep for being fashionable, every girl has a few in her closet. They are pretty much THE staple in every college wardrobe since they are comfy, warm, and easily slip on over whatever you wore to bed last night. Even hardcore fashionistas have lazy days!

Since you most definitely have one (or 6) zip-ups in your closet, I’ll give you a few different ways to wear them so you look more casual cute and less “Holy sh*t I just woke up in my boyfriend’s room and I’m 20 minutes late for class so I’ll just borrow his clothes and run out of the door.”

Contrary to popular belief, that is not cute.

Hoodies are extremely versatile and as long as you get the fit right (read: fitted!), you can wear them with just about anything.

Try pairing a hoodie with skinny jeans and flats to keep it stylish. When comfort is your goal, look past the sweats and throw on a roomy pair of boyfriend jeans or gaucho pants instead. Swap slides, sandals or casual flats in for sneakers so you don’t look like you should be at the gym.

Yes, it’s that easy. Looking good in college doesn’t take time – you just need to pay attention to the way your stuff fits. And if you have a few good hoodies around, you’ll always be one pair of jeans away from a cute ‘fit for class.

I don’t get the appeal of the expensive beach babe. First of all, budget beach babe just sounds better. Second, I simply don’t understand the point of spending so much on a bathing suit just because the piping is plaid. What is the point of spending that much on something that isn’t even original. You look down the row of lounge chairs at a hot Miami hotel and it’s like Burberry drank too much last night resulting in a major hangover and then vomited all over the sunbathers.

There are SO many cute bathing suits, cover ups, sunglasses, totes, etc., out there that are muy cheapo but look muy expensivo. Plus, not only do you look like a beach babe, you look like an original that-girl-has-mad-fashion-sense one to boot.

Just don’t forget your SPF. Even I can’t make a person-turned-lobster look cute.

One-Piece:
Not everyone feels comfortable in a bikini, and this one-piece screams retro chic yet whispers oh so softly, “I’m hiding a muffing top in here!”

Bikini:
The sailboat pattern and retro style top is cute, original and, let’s cut to the chase, will make those gal pals that sit on your chest look mad hot.

Dress:
I absolutely LOVE this dress. It makes a super cute beach cover up or the perfect summer sundress. Those bows? Adorbs.

Sunglasses:
Just like a white tee brings out that summer tan, these white frames will make your bronze cheeks glow. And the shape is just right for every face.

Sunhat:
Sunhats aren’t reserved for grandmas anymore. The are the hottest beach accessory this summer, especially for a beach diva like you. Not only will this khaki hat keep your face from getting burned (and wrinkley in 30 years), but will also keep anyone from noticing you checking those beach boys with the six-packs.

Havaianas:
With a twist! A beach staple, obvi.

Beach Tote:
You need a bag for all those water bottles (i.e. flasks), sunscreen, Us Weeklies, and anything else you need for the beach, and this one is perfect. It’s big, it’s bright, and it ties up top so you won’t lose your precious iPod when your friend kicks your bag over as she runs to the water.
