[It's pretty obvious that the average CollegeCandy reader has some very strong opinions. Opinions that she likes to share with everyone on the site. We love a strong woman, so we thought we'd give her a real forum to discuss her thoughts, feelings, and perspectives. Every Friday I'll be featuring a hot topic (like the romper!) and leaving it up to you, the readers, to duke it out. So, read it and get your debate on in the comments section below!]

We all grew up wanting to be supergirls – maybe not with all of the superpowers – but to be strong, smart, independent chicks who could handle themselves and still wear rockin’ heels. But the world of the superhero has always been a boys club (Wonder Woman famously started out as the Justice League’s secretary). Next week one of the most famous comics in history will have a female hero for the first time; and not just your run-of-the-mill, butt-kicking woman; but a hot, rich, Jewish, lesbian, butt-kicking woman.

But is this kind of character a blow for women’s rights, or are comics really just holding back the female image?

One of the concerns over women in comics has always been that they are hyper-sexualized, which some say gives many of the people (especially men) who read them, the wrong idea about women’s bodies and their functions in the world. And it’s definitely true that the world of superheros seems to be populated by a race of supermodels with Barbie-doll proportions and a propensity for leather. Catwoman is practically the poster girl for fetish garb, and even the great Wonder Woman can’t get rid of the freaking bustier (no matter how hard her writers try)! I mean, have you ever seen Powergirl? Apparently her “powers” are housed in her cleavage.

Ok, so from the looks of girls in comic books, guys are definitely getting the wrong idea about women and their bodies. But, on the other hand, it’s hardly just the ladies who get oversexualized in comics; any real guy with Superman’s physique would probably crumple under the weight of his own torso, so it’s hard to say it’s a one-sided problem.

And while the outfits may leave something to be desired in the coverage department, you can’t say that the women of superhero-land aren’t powerful. Supergirl could take on her Kryptonian cousin any day of the week and the girls of the Marvel Universe – well the X-Men alone have three ladies who could bend the planet to their will, all by themselves. Heck, even Lois Lane, without any powers at all, will jump right into the fray to get her story.

So if we assume that comics really are trying to tell the world what women are supposed to be like, can we really be mad that one of the major facets of these women is that they’re incredibly strong and self-sufficient? Isn’t that something we’ve all been fighting for the world - particularly men- to see about us for a long time? Which would mean that these “BAM! POW!” ladies could actually be helping our cause.

So what do you think?

Are all of these “super” girls just sad, over-sexed reflections of what men want to see? Are they holding us back? Or could characters like Batwoman be the heroes of the future – smart women who can take care of themselves and their cities, while still looking sexy?

So Mariah Carey and Nick Cannon are married. Reasons this is awesome:

1)	Cannon quote: “Since we’ve been together, we’ve been inseparable,” i.e. 6 weeks. Incidentally, I got my new American Apparel dress around the same time the couple started dating, and we too have been inseparable. Perhaps it’s time we tied the knot? I’ve always wanted children, and we’re not getting any younger…

2)	Mariah Carey is 48, and Nick Cannon is 17. I also heard a rumor that Nick Cannon was…

I also heard a rumor that Nick Cannon was created in a lab from a strand of Carey’s hair and grape soda. All facts.

3)	They celebrated their wedding by renting out a Six Flags Magic Mountain for a reported six figures. (On Cannon’s tab, not like it frickin’ matters. He is clearly the one marrying up in the situation.)

4)	At said celebration, Mariah Carey had hair and makeup stylists on hand to fix her up after every ride. Mmmm, bottom-of-the-barrel self-esteem issues and rampant navel-gazing…exactly what I look for in a mate.

5)	To commemorate the occasion, the couple got tatoos: Cannon’s says “Mariah” across his back, while Mimi’s is a small butterfly on her lower back that incorporates the letters MC, supposedly sanding for Mrs. Cannon…or, you’ll note, Mariah Carey. Fucking. Hilarious.

6)	Supposedly, the couple plans to celebrate their anniversary every year by having another wedding. My guess is when the two finally attempt to consummate the marriage and Cannon realizes that Carey has, in fact, had her vagina replaced with a diamond-encrusted speaker that plays “Hero” on repeat, things will dry up pretty quickly.

7)	The marriage comes shortly after the release of Carey’s newest album and the premiere of her movie “Tennessee” in which she plays a waitress. Now, I’m not saying their marriage is a publicity stunt…but I think their marriage might be a publicity stunt. I say if Love Don’t Cost A Thing 2: But A Net Worth of $225 Mil Sure Helps comes out this summer, my suspicions will be proved correct.

But when you really think about it, Cannon and Carey do actually make a pretty good couple, and, well…why the fuck not, right? Mr. and Mrs. Cannon (MC, *snort*), all the best in your bright, Louis Vuitton-filled future together. May the good lord bless you and keep you.

And Nick, I sure hope you like “Hero.”

I like superhero movies. They’re rad. Growing up in the rural North East, there wasn’t much to do once the sun went down, and so instead of huffing paint thinner in the backyard like our neighbors, my brother and I turned to comics. X-Men, Batman, Spiderman, Aliens…and all the 701 offshoots of each. Many hours of my childhood were spent sitting in a Ninja Turtle tent in my brother’s room, passing the newest issue of X Force and a box of Hostess cupcakes back and forth with him.

I’ve seen the X-man movies, watched every single Spiderman (even though I have this huge issue with Kristin Dunst), drooled over Christian Bale as Batman, and recently had the ultimate pleasure of watching Iron Man – and Robert Downy Jr. – kick ass on the big screen.

[Okay, slight tangent: can we talk about the scene where RDJr. is in the cave, and he’s all mad and sweaty and dirty and hammering STEEL? Lord. Pass the HOTsauce please]

I’ve loved all of these movies. They were great fun. But being a writer, and ALSO being a chick, I’ve noticed a really sh*tty trend: in almost all of these films, women are pretty useless.

Since X-Men is more of an ensemble movie, let’s put that aside and focus on Spiderman, Batman, and Iron Man. Besides standing and looking sleek and serious, most of the “leading ladies” in these movies don’t have much to do except walk around indignity until they somehow get into trouble and force the hero to make a big detour and save their ass. Throw in a few one-liners and 4-inch heels and there you have it: a pretty useless pretty face.

I’m not here to write a thesis on why this is, since I already basically know the answer, which is two fold: A) men mostly write comic books and B) men mostly write superhero movies. What I’m here to do is give you the Top 5 Ways a Superhero Movie Would Be Different If A Chick Wrote It:

5) More Dialogues About Feelings

Have you ever noticed how short these movies are on emoting and talking it out? Instead of picking apart their complicated feelings about their love interest or crappy past, superheroes just strap on some metal and latex and set sh*t on fire. If a chick wrote a superhero movie, sh*t would still get set on fire, but the hero would also sit down with his leading lady and explain to her just WHY he’s so brooding and hard to connect with (and feels the need to set sh*t on fire).

4) A Change of Wardrobe: Banning the 4-inch Heel

I don’t know about you, but the last thing I feel like doing in 4-inch heels is walking quickly, let alone running down the street. No wonder women in superhero movies get captured all the time; how are you supposed to get anywhere with your feet encased in stripper shoes?

3) Less Technical Babble

Look, Hollywood screenwriters, you’re not fooling anyone. We all know all that techno mumbo jumbo A) doesn’t exist and B) is only there to make you and every other guy in the theater feel cool. You’re making up words, shoving a ton of them in a paragraph, and telling Robert Downy Jr. to make them sound believable. Lucky for you, he can do that, but next time? Why not fill that space with a little monologue that lets us see the heart behind the mask? Or better yet, just spend those two minutes on the hero stripping in front of a mirror. Which brings me to number 2…

2) More Naked Guy Action

Since these movies are usually written by a dude (or 4, as the case was in Iron Man. Seriously? Four?! There was one guy who just came up with fake technical bullsh*t, wasn’t there?), no one really thinks about the amount of hot male bod action, but let me tell you, if a chick was writing it, you BEST BELIEVE there’d be shirtless scenes galore. Raise your hand if you’d like to watch Christian Bale walk around the batcave in boxer briefs, or Robert Downy Jr. wax his suit in tighty-whities. Where are our shower scenes?! Where’s the sweaty work out montages? If I wrote one of these superhero films, I’d make a point of having my lead character ripped and sweaty and shirtless for at least 78% of the film.

1) Better Female Roles (for F*ck’s Sake)

No more annoying romantic interests who exist purely because moviegoers need a little T and A in every film. No more nosey news reporters who shove their nosey noses where they obviously shouldn’t go and end up being bait for the bad guy. It’s time for women to have good dialogue, costumes more complicated than a tight pencil skirt and the aforementioned hooker heels, and a reason for being in the damn movie in the first place.

I’ve got some ideas. Hollywood, have your peeps call me, alright?
