Budget Stylista: Floral Frocks That You Can Rock!

Though it’s hard to think about it now (because it’s hard to think of anything when you’re knee deep in snow), florals are huge for Spring. Shoes, jackets, bags, you name it- with the exception of a cute boy toting a bouquet at my front door, florals are popping up just about everywhere. That being said, it’s hard to look at a floral pattern and wonder if you will look more like your grandma chillin’ in Boca than the uber fashionista you want to portray. So here are some tips to help you out:

1. Keep the rest of the outfit simple. Choose ONE piece of jewelery or a simple belt so that the flowers are the main event.
2. Keep it fun. Aim to keep the look playful, youthful and appropriate for situations other than the 4pm early bird special.
3. Fit is important. Go for fitted dresses, shorter skirts and trendier cuts. Even if the pattern is reminiscent of the drapes at g-ma’s, these things will keep it youthful (and hot).

Here are two floral looks for you to try on for size. One, a bolder and brighter ensemble for those daring ladies, and the other, a softer, more feminine style. Read More »

Fashion Porn: Jean Orgy

jean orgy introRemember back in your pre-college days when the start of school always meant new outfits and school supplies? Even though you’ve probably swapped your notebooks with netbooks, there’s no reason to end the tradition of new clothes for the start of a new year and what wardrobe would be complete without a new pair of jeans? (Or 12.)

Denim (not sweatpants) should be the staple go-to in any college girl’s wardrobe. They are the perfect thing to pick up off the floor and pull on when you’re running late for class, you can wait months between washing them (don’t judge – you know you do it, too) and, obvi, they are a much better evening option if you wanna avoid the crotch shots.

With all the fits and washes of jeans out there this year, there’s bound to be at least one pair perfect for your lifestyle, figure and budget. The key to the perfect pair of jeans is to try on pair, after pair, after pair, after… well you get the picture. Each pair – even if it’s the exact same size and style – will fit differently, so patience is most definitely a virtue when it comes to shopping for denim. It’s also important to realize that not every fit will look good on you, so keep trying ’til you find that perfect pair that makes you feel like a million bucks.

Oh, and it’s OK if that pair also costs a million bucks. If there’s one thing worth splurging on, it’s a high quality pair of denim. Just trust me on this one. (Click on the jeans to get all the shopping info.) Read More »

Attention World: Jessica Simpson is NOT Fat

gallery_main-0126_jessica_simpson_cookoff_00.jpgDear Mean Bloggers/News Outlets of the Americas,

Are you kidding me? Like, seriously; are you freaking kidding me?

You’re calling Jessica Simpson fat? FAT?! Maybe she put on a few pounds this winter (just like the rest of the population), or maybe she is the victim of a terrible, TERRIBLE, wardrobe malfunction (hello, mom jeans), but the girl is by no means fat.

I won’t even comment on how ridiculous our society is that this is one of the top headlines today. (Ok, yes I will. There are much bigger things happening in this world right now – things that matter – and all I can find online is a picture after picture of Jessica Simpson’s “severe weight gain”?) And who are we that we have the right to call anyone fat? Unless you have a medical degree or some kind of nutrition background, SHUT UP; it’s not your place to comment.

These days it is so easy to bring someone down thanks to the privacy we have behind our computer screens, but that doesn’t mean we should. Especially when the entire purpose of the comments people make is to be mean and hurtful. These comments are not concerned about her health – and she sure doesn’t seem to be at risk for obesity – so why are we even commenting on her figure at all? Does it feel good to see someone else with flaws? Does it make us feel better to be catty, mean bitches?

If anything I think it makes us look even more insecure about our bodies and ourselves. Read More »

Celebrity Chic on the Cheap: Kim Kardashian Looks Cute Covered Up!

kim.jpg[Every week our style guru takes a celebrity look and breaks it down for you, our poor college fashionista. What does that mean? It means that while the celebrities are spending $5,000 on an ensemble, you don’t have to.

All you have to do is click on the goods and - boom - you can buy the entire ensemble. Yes, we know; there is a spot for her in heaven.]

I don’t looove Kim Kardashian (I still don’t understand why she’s famous?), but there are a few things I do love about her.

1) Her badunkadunk. More, how she flaunts it, dresses it and embraces it.

2) Her step-brother, Brody Jenner. Mmmm.

3) Her show. I know – I can’t believe I said it either, but it’s funny. You know, in that “this is so ridiculous and it makes my family look SO normal” sorta way. Just don’t tell anyone I watch it; I’ve got a reputation to keep here.

4) This outfit. It’s simple. It’s classy. It’s flattering to all body types. And it’s easy to copy.  All while saving up some extra Benjamins for the weekend bar trip.

Love Em or Hate Em: High Waisted Jeans

fergie_300×400.jpgRemember when jeans came in Low, Super Low, Extra Low, and Dangerously Low? Yeah. Those could all be summed up into one rise: Show-Your-Crack Low.

Yeah, those were the days. You would sit in class and have no choice but to stare at the ass-crack of the girl in front of you. If you were lucky, she was wearing bikini style underwear. Otherwise, it was nothing but crack.

Well, people got sick of it – especially designers. In order to combat the crack, style makers decided to take jeans higher. Much higher. Enter the high waisted jean; it is very retro, very chic and very in right now.

While I love the lack of gratuitous crack in my life, I am not sure how I feel about the high waisted pant. Yes, Fergie looks great in a pair of high-waisted skinnies, but can all women really pull of this look?

What are your thoughts?

High-Waist Denim Baby!

high waisted jeansI toured NYC seeking some waist clinching hotness… four Urban Outfitters and three hours later, the stone wash faded dark denim shorts I heard about were sold out and not expected to return.

Balderdash! And they look so damn cute!

If you’re thinking ‘grandma pant’, forget about it. No, my friends, high-waist everything: shorts, jeans, skirts and jumpers are making a slam-bam come back.

This style isn’t just flattering to one shape, either.

Curvy, plus sized, and teeny tiny babes can work ‘em. Embrace the shape! The cut creates an amazing hour-glass figure, even if you’re boy-shaped, like myself.

Farrah knew what was up, or at least, her stylist did. We’ve all seen the fashion come and go…and then come back again, but today how much better could we have it? The mix of seventies and eighties offers an ‘anything goes’ fashion perspective.

Baby doll tops, bell-shaped dresses, minis that show the leg but not the belly pooch, and now… keep your eye out for the high-waisted numbers. Snag yourself a vintage pair and really work it. Read More »
