My Freshman Year: Day 89

friends relaxing

Days as a Freshman: 88

Mood: Not good

“How long did you stay?” Rebecca threw a pair of socks into her suitcase and looked up from her underwear drawer. “Did you listen to their entire conversation?”

“I had to! I didn’t want Public Safety to know I was sitting there!” Standing by Stacey’s mirror, I poked around her jewelry, moving pairs of pearl earrings and fake diamond bracelets in an attempt to find a ring of mine that had disappeared a few weeks ago. Stacey was big on barrowing without asking.

“Did they talk for a long time?” Closing one drawer and opening another, Rebecca continued to pack her bag. She was leaving early for the Thanksgiving holiday, a fact I had not received well. Three whole days living in a room with Stacey by myself spelled absolute misery.

“The cop said they had heard about a party at the Soccer House the night before, but of course Sasha denied it.” A flash of jade stood out from the mess of cubic zirconium, and I carefully began to untangle my ring from one of Stacey’s cheap necklaces. “He got all mad at the cop. Said they were being unfair…staking the house out and stuff. He said it wasn’t politically correct.” Read More »

Summer Send Off Cocktail: Watermelon Margarita

mexican_watermelon_cooler.JPG Being the giant fan of summer that I am, Labor Day is always a little sad.

Even though it won’t get chilly for another few weeks, the mere promise of shorter days, schoolwork, and winter hats constantly ruining perfectly styled hair is enough to make me a little depressed…at least until fall fashions go on sale.

For many of us, Labor Day is a last hurrah; our last 24 hours to wear white pants (which perhaps some of us shouldn’t be wearing in the first place?), last day to barbeque without standing by the grill in a jacket, and last 3-day weekend for a while.

It’s also a party, whether we’re partying with friends or throwing our own personal celebration that consists of doing absolutely nothing—and enjoying the hell out of it.

In honor of Goodbye-To-Bathing-Suits weekend, I’ve found the perfect cocktail to commemorate a summer gone by. Read More »

The Perfect Memorial Day Cocktail

MojitoMemorial Day: A day to remember those who fought for our country, a day to spend with the family and, of course, a day to get drunk.

I know that may seem totally inappropriate – especially considering the countless people who have lost their lives for this country – but come on! No work, warm weather and BBQing outside create the perfect day for a cocktail…or 5.

You could do the “American Thing” and sit back with some beer and burgers. Or you could try something new, fresh and totally delicious. Like this amazing Pear Mojito. Nothing says warm weather like a cool and refreshing Mojito (mmm ruuuuum) and adding pear to the mix really kicks up the amazing flavor.

The recipe may be a bit more complicated than simply cracking open some Bud Light, but it is worth it.

What you will need:

- 1 1/2 parts white rum

- 1 part fresh squeezed lime juice

- 2 parts freshly extracted pear nectar

- 1 part simple syrup

- 4 sprigs mint

- seltzer
