The main question on all of our minds, though, is the same one that always crops up when rich, powerful men cheat on their gorgeous wives with trash like Rachel Uchitel, Nicole Forrester, or Ashley Dupré: “What the hell is wrong with him?”

Jessica Wakeman of The Frisky brings up an interesting point about this line of thinking. As she writes, “What I want to know is why we insist a woman’s beauty—which is highly subjective!—is some kind of barometer—which is highly shallow!—of whether or not her hubby will cheat.”

Wakeman’s right. People have affairs because they’re unhappy for whatever reason, not because they suddenly find their significant others hideous. “The implication,” she goes on to say, “is that Nordegren is too pretty to cheat on and that Tiger’s infidelity would make more sense if she were ugly—but since she’s beautiful, there must be something else she did that drove him to do something so insane.”

Okay, point taken. We should be evolved enough that when a guy cheats on his Swedish former model wife, we don’t immediately think that it must be because she’s somehow inadequate—or that the whole thing is somehow her fault.

Then again, thoughts like those weren’t really running through my head when I first heard about the whole sordid affair. I certainly don’t want to blame poor Elin Nordegren for her crappy husband’s idiotic mistake.

When I wonder how Tiger could possibly cheat on a seemingly lovely woman like Elin, it’s because I just don’t get how a guy that used to being in the public eye could possibly think he could mess around with another woman without getting his face splashed all over Us Weekly. Don’t celebrities know that members of the media are always watching them, just waiting for someone to screw up royally? What made Tiger think that he would be different?

Moral of the story: Tiger Woods did not bone a stripper because his wife is not smokin’. He did, however, think that he was somehow impervious to the vicious gaze of the celebrity gossip machine. And for that, maybe he deserved to be tapped lightly a few times with a nine iron.

Ask any girl what the worst thing her boyfriend/fiancée/husband could do to her, and the answer is probably going to be the same: cheat. To most women, cheating is the ultimate betrayal of trust, which is probably why, when they find out their man’s been unfaithful, so many women get angry and seek revenge.

Scary, serious revenge.

Famous stories of women getting revenge on their cheating partners have circulated in gossip and in the news for years: women have reportedly cut up their husband’s clothing, dumped all their husband’s belongings in the front yard, and even destroyed their cars (the subject of Carrie Underwood’s hit song “Before He Cheats,” the story of one woman getting revenge on her cheating man by smashing up his car with a Louisville Slugger®). Another story tells of the wife of a British radio-talk show host, who sold her husband’s $45,000 car on eBay for 90 cents after she heard him tell a woman on the air that he’d leave his wife for her. One woman even paid for a billboard ad advertising her husband’s infidelity (see picture above)!

Even some celebrities have sought revenge on their philandering lovers: Lisa “Left-Eye” Lopes (formerly of the band TLC) set fire to her boyfriend’s house after discovering his infidelity, and comedian Terri Garr has admitted to smashing the windows of her boyfriend’s house in the middle of the night.

But this story is undoubtedly the worst of all: earlier this week, a woman in India, after discovering that her husband had been sneaking around on her, drugged him with sleeping pills. While he was sleeping, she cut off his “sausage” with a razorblade and threw it into the street, where a pack of wild dogs ate it for breakfast. Ouch. Guess she guaranteed he’ll never cheat again.

Or eat sausage.

What do you guys think? Is getting revenge on an unfaithful man right?

Wrong. All wrong. Wrong movie, wrong time, wrong situation. In all fairness, I kinda knew what was coming, having heard about the book well before the movie was even in the works. I didn’t like the idea of it then, but somehow between two weeks ago and last Friday, I decided that I needed to see the movie with the bestie as a girls’ night out scenario. Here’s why I advise that everyone without ironclad self-esteem skip the movie, at least until you can see it in the comfort of your home.

1. If you’re into escapism through upbeat movies, this is not the one for you. After two hours of ‘He Just Not That Into You’, not a single one of the main characters’ plot-lines even resembled positive. I was literally crawling out of my seat trying to salvage the remainder of a happy evening as commitments combusted, relationships crumbled, and ruthless reality checks conspired to sink the Girls’ Night. The only reason I made it through is because I had to see if the writers would actually throw the audience a bone and make a happy ending.

2. The movie is ruthless in its portrayal of female stereotypes. “He’s Just Not That Into You” isn’t just a depressing chick flick, it’s the anti-chick flick. Throughout the entire movie, I kept asking myself, “Do I actually do that? Am I that crazy?” The answer, according to “He’s Just Not That Into You,” is yes. We are all clingy, insane, insecure, naive, trusting idiots, who drive away our boyfriends and potential bfs by being like that. I don’t know about you, but movies that continuously reiterate that I’m completely psycho and clingy tend to turn me off at about the 60 minute mark.

3. Your faith in committed relationships will die a horrible death in the two hour and fifteen minute love massacre. After two hours of infidelity, dating disasters, and misguided love, there was not a girl in the theater who had faith in her relationship, or ability to secure one. Those of us who were single experienced what almost came off as anti-relationship propaganda (“If you do this, this, or this, your ovaries can kiss their chance at motherhood goodbye!”), and were left doubting every simple sentence we had ever spoken to the male gender. My friend, who has been in a committed relationship for the better part of a year and a half, had started to wonder if her boyfriend could have been cheating on her. The movie had a sinister talent for slipping insecurity into our minds, and then mocking us for being insecure.

4. There are better things to do on weeknights than going to a movie that strips down your character and makes fun of what it finds there. The movie seriously killed the happy, estrogen-filled mood of the evening, and left the two of us as quaking, emotional maniacs. I can honestly say that except for when I saw “Lord of the Rings” as a twelve year old, and was terrified by the Orcs, I have never wanted to leave a movie so fast (30 minutes in). Save your seven bucks for dollar pitchers downtown, not “He’s Just Not That Into You.”

5. The movie is more suitable as a look into Gender Studies than a romantic dramedy. I’ve had more laughs in my College Algebra class than this movie. If you do go, look at it as a gender wars type of thing, not something that will make you feel cheery and secure by the last minute happy ending. (It was a happy ending, it was just a too little-too late type of thing.) The movie is accurate in its portrayal of how men and women want different things out of life, and the plot turnaround towards the end was satisfying, but ultimately not enough to recover from the first two hours. It had the effect of a doctor suddenly giving you anaesthesia after your surgery already happened, with a “Look what I just found!” air.

Let’s just hope none of these couples break up before the end of the day.

The ever stylish one and the rocker – I completely wrote these two off from the moment they announced their relationship, but I eat my words. Especially after seeing the cuteness of their baby, Harlow. Their hotness naturally stems from the fact that they are a rockstar Hollywood couple, but also because their relationship allowed Richie to get herself healthy again (remember those emaciated pictures of her not so long ago?) and I love, love, love them together for that. I hope that they last a long, long time.

Posh and Becks

The fashion-y Spice Girl and the beautiful Footballer. A decade and three kids later, they are still going strong despite rumors of his infidelity and plenty of media scrutiny. I’d like to strap Posh down and feed her, but even her emaciated frame can’t keep me from being totally in love with this couple. Especially after their 2007 W Magazine photo shoot. Hot damn.

Sting and Trudie Styler

I know, I know – he’s pretty old. But these two have lasted a long time and God, don’t you want to do all sorts of yoga with Sting? You know it’s true no matter what he says; he just doesn’t want to drive me insane from such a distance. I can’t believe how hot he is at 57. It doesn’t matter who he has on his arm; he is just that hot.

(Note: Sorry – this turned into ‘Melissa is revealing all sorts of crazy to us in thinking that old man Sting is hot’, but whatever; I still think their longevity is pretty hot too.)

Brad and Angelina

I can’t make this list without including Brangelina because there’s some unwritten gossip law that says that we must worship them and their do-gooding philanthropist child rearing ways. Personally, I don’t like ‘em and won’t use their vomitable moniker but they DO make gorgeous babies.

Now that college is a thing of the past for me, I’ve luckily been able to set aside more time these days for reading, but – sometimes – I need a little inspiration.

Needless to say, I was psyched when Spin Magazine invited me to be a member of their book club. I took up the offer gladly and now I’m thrilled each month to read and discuss the books that the selected members choose. The first book that I read was Milan Kundera’s, ‘The Unbearable Lightness of Being‘. And I loved it.

Each sentence is painted artistically and poetically as the stories surrounding several lovers’ intertwined lives unravels. Infidelity is a leading motif in this piece, but the book neither encourages nor discourages it. Instead, the book plants you into a place of perspective. It allows you to see deeply into the lives of those who cheat and break hearts and those who are faithful and get their hearts broken. And every possible variable in between.

It’s a moving book…one of those ‘emotional brick to your face’ kind of reads. It’s heavy. More than infidelity, it discusses existentialism…the pursuit of living ‘lightly’ or ‘heavily’ and the burdens that each choice will bring onto those in your own life. It’ll make your stomach sick continually, but it’s a marvelous work…one that I encourage you all to read if for no other reason than perspective alone.

I lost my virginity at a 4-hour hooker motel in Bushwick, Brooklyn during a rainstorm at 3am. It was actually meant as a casual escape from a breakdancing party where I did not feel I fit in. Before I knew what I was doing, I was leaning close to the bright-red ear of my then-boyfriend and whispering that I thought tonight was the night. But I digress. From what, I’m not sure.

I guess what I’m trying to say is, yeah, it’s a wild story and it was, actually, a very wild night, but we were safe (well, as safe as you can be in Bushwick). We used condoms. And to me, that’s all that matters.

I feel like the current trend is to act overtly sexual and then be really, really embarrassed about the actual act. It’s okay for 10-year-olds to wear lip gloss and bikinis, but it’s not okay to talk about sex itself.

The act of sex is intimate and, hopefully, loving. It’s natural. It’s necessary. Why are we so freaked out?

And why, seriously, why are we letting this affect our politics?

Elliot Spitzer was doing some pretty great things before this whole hooker scandal. While I agree that what he did was morally reprehensible (and I really do), it does not in any way tell us what kind of governor he is. Well, was. Yes, he was hypocritical. Yes, he was unfaithful. But politically, he was doing a great job. Why should he resign for something completely unrelated to politics?

On an almost opposite note, we take Hillary Clinton and we make her into this chaste prude. We call her ice queen, we crack jokes about her husband’s infidelity. We want her to have a little more femininity, a little more sex. Again, Clinton’s campaign has been one long roll of suck, but that has nothing to do with her sex life.

So which is it, America? More sex or less? Why must we be so puritanical that we demand an exact measure of sexual tension, no more, no less, from not only our citizens and our celebrities, but from our politicians?
