Campus Couture: Scaachi, Ryerson University

[While everyone is fabulous in their own right, we thought we should celebrate the campus fashionistas of the world for their continued excellence in not looking like a hot mess for class. So, we started stalking those girls on campus (think Victoria's fun accessories) to get a few pics and get some tips on their personal style.

And maybe a restraining order or two.

But it’s worth it to highlight fresh, unique wardrobe choices that show personality and the courage to wear what you believe in. You think you’ve got some major style? Know someone else who’s always looking ferosh? Think the world needs to see what she can do? Send us an email with some photos and she could be the next fashionista celebrated right here.]

For someone who adores UFC, Scaachi definitely does not dress the part (though if you bought her a “Tap out” t-shirt she’d probably love you forever).  The first time I was formally introduced to Scaachi, she was dressed like Jackie O. (it was Halloween), but since then I’ve always admired her feminine style.  I can probably count on one hand how many times I’ve seen her in pants in the months I’ve known her, as she says skirts and dresses are much more sophisticated and give her room to move (in case she needs to practice her wrestling moves?).

The perfect example of how to make discount fashion look good, Scaachi always looks put together, despite the fact that she shops at some of the thriftiest stores around. But what stands out about her most is her signature accessory: an interesting, unique coat. She’s always got one topping off her outfits and the day I found her, it was this black brocade coat that stopped me in my tracks. It was so beautiful, yet so understated at the same time (much like all of Scaachi’s accessory choices). She didn’t look like a girl on her way to class – she looked like some fabulous fashion magazine editor on her way to a shoot.

Maybe it’s her attention to detail, maybe it’s her ability to mix things together to get just the right look, or maybe it’s the bold lip she favors (which most college girls shy away from), but this girl’s got a style that totally inspires me. Read More »

Happy Women’s Equality Day!

grace kelly princess-diana audrey_hepburn jackie o

On this day in 1920 the 19th Ammendment was added to the Constitution, giving women the right to vote. And in honor of that momentous occasion, today has been named Women’s Equality Day. We have come a mighty long way since the days before women’s suffrage. We have women dominating in arenas that formerly were dude-only territory: sports, politics, and even entertainment (remember learning about the times when men played women in Shakespearean plays?).

Despite our amazing advances, there are still those few women who just don’t really seem to be helping the cause. In fact, they might just be ruining it for the rest of us. Let’s face it, society today has become media obsessed and some (not all) of the women dominating the spotlight nowadays may be taking us a few steps back. What happened to the positive female role models of the past?

Here’s what I mean: Read More »

For the last few months, every Monday I’ve highlighted a star who I believe epitomizes style, whether because she takes risks and sets trends, or because she puts together simple ensembles that perfectly highlight her assets. These ladies are all style icons of our time for different reasons and I’d jump at the opportunity to invade their closets any day. Style Idol: Michelle Obama – The First Lady of Fashion

obama11.jpg[For this week's Style Idol I decided to look past the celebrities of Hollywood and focus on someone else making waves in the fashion world. She doesn't get paid to look good, but she is scrutinized every. single. day. And despite the fact that she isn't a singer or big movie star, this woman's wardrobe is inspiring women's wardrobes nationwide. Including mine.]

We’re just 8 days away from what will be one of the most historic elections in history, and definitely the most historic in our lifetime. So in the spirit of the impending election my Style Idol of the week is the woman who could very well be our first lady come January: Michelle Obama.

Being touted as the Jackie O of our generation, Michelle combines classic elegance and grace with modern touches, like chunky turquoise necklaces and studded belts. She goes for simple ensembles that aren’t over-accesorized, and she appeals to women across America by wearing clothes that are affordable for the average female. Michelle has the ability to mix it up, still look flawless, and resinspire the American woman’s love for a string of pearls and a tailored suit.

No matter what happens on November 4th, Michelle Obama is a winner on my fashion ballot. Read More »
