New York Fashion Week (and every other fashion week, for that matter) always unveils new fashion innovations. And this year is no different. As industy “pros” weigh in on what premiering styles they’re excited for, I say, “Guess what, fashion weeks? We don’t need these crazy, new high-fashion designs!” We have the old ones.

There’s no way I could continue to write a fashion column without highlighting Rihanna. This girl is one of the most eclectic celebrities out there. One day, the paparazzi snaps photos of her in suspenders and harem pants; the next, you could easily see her in a body-contouring mini-dress with 6-inch stilettos…going out to lunch.

Rihanna attained her fashionista status by being completely and utterly balls to the walls…how can you not love it?

However, the outfit I’m re-creating today is actually one of Rihanna’s tamer looks, because though you, CollegeCandy reader, are fabulous, you are bound to certain rules of fashion that do not apply to celebrities. Read: you can’t really pull this off for class.  But it’s still hot, not just in its own right, but relative to that tragic gaggle of girls strutting around campus thinking Uggs, leggings, and Northface = high fashion.

To start things off, I gave you two options here. One is a tailored military jacket, similar to the one Rihanna is wearing, but so much cheaper. The other, the gray tweed, is very structured like Rihanna’s coat but in a completely different material (and we all already know tweed is a wonderful addition to anyone’s wardrobe). They both make wonderful additions to this outfit and still maintain the overall look and feel Rihanna’s got goin’ on.

Underneath the jacket is a super warm and comfortable sweater tunic that would just as hot over colorful tights as it would over your favorite pair of jeans. For this outfit, I chose jeggings because they meld to your legs and make it much it much easier to slip into these amazing thigh high boots. I know, thigh-highs have a skanky connotation, but it is so easy to make them modest, and still super sassy. (And, hello, can we talk about these Target boots? Deal. of. the. century.)

Of course, an ensemble inspired by Rihanna must include some totally unexpected element, and in this one, it’s the bright floral hat. I love that the hat from Express pairs stripes with a huge adorable flower, and it adds a touch of whimsy to this otherwise muted and sophisticated look.

Every (dreadful) Monday, I write a list. Definitely not a to-do list (because it’s not satisfying checking “browse J.Crew’s website” and “Re-watch every episode of Rachel Zoe” off a list) and not “that list” (because I haven’t added to that list… in forever). No, my lists are more about whatever is relevant and weighing heavy on the CollegeCandy readers’ minds (or just mine) right now. Like scarves and jeans and jackets….

The first day of fall came only a week ago and I’ve already stuffed all my shorts into a duffel and shoved them under my bed. Nothing, I tell you, nothing (okay, other than Starbucks Pumpkin Spice Lattes), is more enticing about fall than the clothing choices. I mean, where to start? Sweater dresses, boots, comfy jeans? I couldn’t be storing my sundresses and gladiator sandals faster if I tried.

And try I did.

However, as I page through magazines and scroll through my Google reader, I can’t help but notice some of the heinous fall trends popping up that can’t end sooner. Here’s the rundown of what needs to go.

10. Open toed booties
Seriously, what is up with that? Isn’t the point of a boot to keep your foot warm? Why would you make a boot peeptoe? Unattractive and unnecessary.

9. Button Down Plaid Shirts
I thought these died with Kurt Cobain. Why are they still being worn? Enough.

8. Fur Vests
I’m no PETA advocate, but come on. I’m all about a little faux fur trim but what the hell is the point of an entire fur vest? Newsflash: you look like roadkill, not Kelly Bensimon. (Editor’s Note: Wait, is that a bad thing?)

7. Purple Lipstick
I’ve done purple lips before….after chugging an entire bottle of $2 Cabernet by myself after my boyfriend dumped me. Seriously, just gross.

6. Tory Burch Flats
Please invest your $200 in some shoes that not everyone else has. This fad has died faster than Beanie Babies.

5. The smokey eye
I love a good smokey eye but do I have to read about it in every and all magazines I purchase? Over and over? Page after page?! No care. Taylor Momsen, take note.

4. Jeggings
Skinny jeans: fine. Super duper skinny jeans: that’s OK too. Glorified jean sweatpants? Only in America.

3. Long skirts
You look like a teacher. And not the fun, cool one who gave out gold stars. The one with bunched up pantyhose and who always had squeaky chalk.

2. Fedoras
Repeat after me, girlfriend: I’m not Frank Sinatra.

1. Ugg Boots
Preach to me all you want about how you just love how warm they are and they don’t look “that bad.” I’m still not buying it. Or them.

I’m an unabashed Xtina lover. She snagged me with “Reflections” (yes, I took it all the way back to Mulan), and I’ve stuck with her through her various musical and aesthetic reinventions, from the dirty to the vintage to the futuristic.

What I’ve always admired about Christina, besides her stellar voice and her ability to redefine catty and alienate her peers is her personal style. She is not one of those celebs we’re likely to catch bumming around in slouchy sweats and stained shirts (I still love you, Britney!). Even when she’s strolling around L.A., she’ll elevate a casual tank top + leggings look with interesting accessories and sky-high heels.

What I love most about this look is that its perfectly casual for your daily activities, but – thanks to the funky fedora and oversize sunglasses – still totally chic. (Plus, the fedora provides ample coverage for that “I woke up late and didn’t have time to wash my greasy hair” issue we often encounter.) The outfit is perfectly balanced with the loose-fitting tee over a pair of ultra-skinny jeans, and the fire red heels add an extra touch of rock star. Of course, if sporting heels to 6 hours of class isn’t your idea of fun, you can replace the heels with a more comfortable patent leather flat and still maintain a look that is fresh, fun and the antithesis of college sloppy. The best part of this look? Layering on a loose cardigan for those frigid campus buildings only makes it better.

College in the fall is really a beautiful thing. All of those boys wear those cute knit beanies and I can finally whip out my buttery chestnut tall boots and vintage scarf.  There is a valid excuse to drink Baileys and hot chocolate instead of doing homework on a Saturday afternoon, and you can fall asleep to the distant hum of college football.

Whew, is it getting hot in here or what? Before you get too excited (and I get so nostalgic for my college days that I curl up in the fetal position for a week), let’s look at a glorious week that was.

* Dorm living should seriously come with a long list of rules.  Shiz can get technical and difficult to endure! Here is a list of 4 unofficial dorm living rules we at CollegeCandy have collected. And it’s up to you to come up with the 5th rule (and win a hefty prize!).

* It seems like every day I’m on Facebook, someone has one of those incredibly in depth status updates about their love life, their bowel movements and other various things I just really never want to hear about ever again. Can we hold on the facebook overshare, people??

* I thought Math was my worst subject. Until it came to Chemistry. . .and dating.

* August has been a month of ’90s nostalgia.  After intense voting, you have dubbed your favorite thing about ’90s…(drum roll please)….Cory and Topanga! And Cory Matthews (or Ben Savage) says thank you.

For some reason, whenever summertime hits I flock to Victoria’s Secret like a freshman to a kegger. It is inevitable that I get there and push past everyone to get to the keg underwear bin. Then tear those $2.99 panties out of that other girl’s hands.

Don’t judge.

Seriously though, Victoria’s Secret is so amazing for summer, especially the PINK line. All of the bright colors, soft breathable fabric, and summer-licious patterns. There’s just something about the store. I’m going to go ahead and blame the countless dollars I spend there on all of the fumes from Love Spell they spritz in the beauty section…

Excuses, excuses, excuses.

Regardless, the summer-outfit-go-to paradise always has the funnest (yes, funnest) clothes out there; fun, flirty and youthful. So I took it upon myself to really buckle down during Finals Week and seek out the most bomb diggity deals on the cyber racks of Victoria’s Secret. Whatever that secret is.

I’m always a number one fan of PINK’s sweatpants and these are confirming my dedicated loyalty to the comfy pants. Since you don’t have razor vision, these are made with intricate waffle material. Yum. And the chrome ‘Love’ at the hip is just enough to dress them up and express my own love for the pair.

This is too hot to trot. And too hot to pass by.  And for being only $15.50, a completely sinful purchase. Not to mention, this baby comes in a variety of amazing colors (blue, yellow, pink, navy) and probably a free summer beach pass. What sane lifeguard wouldn’t want you coming back to the beach, again…and again…and again after he sees you strutting your stuff in this sexy number?

You can always count on Vickie’s Secret to make every outfit drool worthy. This top in particular is so subtly sexy and saucy I want it in every color.

Oh, my dear jeggings. Let me in on Victoria’s Brittany’s secret: If you haven’t reached a jeggings phase yet, it is about time you do. They are AMAZING, comfortable and work with every outfit.

I’m so infatuated with this shirt. It’s funky, the colors are yummy and sensual and I.Want.It. This shirt is a perfect indication that it’s time to get your tan on. How good would this look with a sun-kissed glow?!

Now I’m having a love affair with this shirt.  The intricate simple detail is sexy and innocent. For summertime this beauty is definitely perfect for a sultry day.  Airy, fresh, and fierce. Pair it with a comfy pair of dark jeans and hit the town, sister. Cheers to you.

Since I’m a casual-hound, I’m loving this laid back top for only $12.99. Whether you are sitting outside reading a book or have to quickly run to the grocery store for limes and gin – this topper is perfect for a quick outfit.

I’ve been a sucker for funky patterns lately and this satisfies my craving. You could wear this top out for happy hour and pair it with a crisp cute pair of white shorts. Or you could rock it at night with some black skinnies and a hot pair of heels.

I’ll admit, a few years ago when leggings came back in style, I thought there was no way I’d wear them. In fact, I told everyone I knew that I’d rather “walk around pants-less than try and pass off some leggings as pants.”

Obviously, I’ve since eaten my words. Leggings are now a staple in my wardrobe and I often wonder how I lived without them. They’re versatile, comfortable and affordable. I wear them to the gym, to class, to work and to party. Not even jeans can do that. And there are so. many. different kinds now! Forget those basic blacks, leggings come in all sorts of colors and patterns now, meaning even more opportunities to wear ‘em. Here are a few pairs you can rock out for under $20.

Betsey Johnson is known for her fun, flirty styles and these snakeskin print leggings live up to her reputation.  You can wear these with a graphic tee for daytime or a sexy top and stilettos for night.

Take a walk on the wild side (or pay homage to Peggy Bundy) with these leopard print leggings. Yes, they seem like a lot, but leopard is very big this season and you can easily tone these down by pairing them with an oversized solid top and some basic black flats.

Think of these baby blues like a pair of jeans: they’re neutral and will go with just about anything. My pick: an oversized tee or button down and a pair of sandals or flats.

If you’re not quite ready for a patterned legging but you’re sick of your boring black pair, these are for you. The zippers on the ankles give them just a little extra spunk and they look adorable with flats.

The lace/damask print on these is casual enough to be worn with a plain top for daytime classes, but stylish enough to be paired with heels and a sexy top for a night out with your fabulous friends.

Denim leggings (AKA jeggings) are back for another season and finding this pair at Anthropologie for half-price makes ‘em even sweeter.

So they’re not technically UNDER $20 (they’re exactly $20), but, really, $20 is totally worth it for a pair of adorable, vintage-inspired pedal pushers.

Who says you can’t go bright? The pop of color and classic plaid print is a perfect spring combo. Throw a loose black or white tank on top and you’re done.

Oh yes, the most tried and true wardrobe staple known to man (and woman): jeans.

Jeans are an amazingly versatile little thing: you can dress them up or dress them down; wear them in winter or summer: and find them in a seemingly unlimited variety of cuts, colors and styles.  Denim is ALWAYS in in some form or another, and this season is no exception.

Be on the lookout for denim in all forms: jackets, vests, dresses, and even shoes. Not that you should wear them all together. In fact, please don’t. But throwing in the perfect piece – whether it’s some adorable boyfriend jeans, a sexy mini or a pair of  ballet flats – is always welcome and always works. Especially when you’re dealing with cuteness like this.

Jean jackets were IT in the ’80s and ’90s and they’re makin’ a major comeback in the ’10s. They’re perfect for spring because they fall between a heavy coat and a cardi, so they’ll keep you warm without making you sweat.

It’s hard to go wrong with a shirt dress and a shirt dress in denim?  You’re all set for that first picnic in the park.  Add your own belt for a pop of color or wear it as is with a cute pair of flats or some wedges.

Jean shorts are an American classic and a pair for under 10 bucks?  You can’t really beat that.

A denim mini is a must and this one works because it’s casual enough to wear to the beach, but can also be dressed up for a night out with the chicas.

Denim shirts are huge this season and this one will look adorable worn open over a tank with a great necklace or loads of bangles. Pair it with shorts and some Chuck Taylors or flats for the perfect spring look.

So I’m slightly in love with these darling ballet flats and think they’d be ridiculously cute with a flowy white or pastel sundress.

Denim leggings (or jeggings if you prefer) are back this season and these capri style are perfect for the spring/summer months.

Boyfriend jeans are also here to stay (for this season, at least), and these mix in more than one trend. The light, distressed denim with the railroad stripe print gives them an added little oomph. Perfect for day with a basic tee or rock ‘em at night with a cami and some killer heels.

There isn’t much else to say except, perhaps, “hooray for jeans!”  Really, could we live without ‘em?  I don’t think so. And at prices like these, we definitely don’t have to.
