College Myths Debunked: Corn Dogs with a Side of Laxatives

middlebury-dining-lg

"Oh god. I gotta go, guys. Like, really go. #2."

That’s where College Candy comes in. We’re not going to debate whether or not the Theory of Relativity actually exists (a disappointment, I know, but I’m a communications major and stopped taking science classes after Baby Bio fresh year). However, we are here to thoroughly investigate the most widespread college knowledge (no, not rhyming)—the myth.

If you go to college, chances are you’ve eaten at a dining hall. You’ve experienced gourmet menu items such as “liquid mashed potatoes,” “Sahara-dry chicken” and “green jell-o with mysteriously hard parts around the edges.” And as delightful as your dining experience was, chances are you felt the results of that extra serving of corn a short time later as you were flooring it for the communal bathroom. And if you were just lucky enough to have a meal-plan (like I was my freshman year), you got to experience the joy of this routine three times a day. Every day. For a year.

I remember wondering what the hell was wrong with me; I’d never spent so much money on toilet paper and air freshener before in my life. Did college trigger an internal mechanism that doomed me to poop all the time for the rest of my life? “No,” my roommate said, “The dining halls put baby laxatives in the food, duh.”

“OMG, why would they do that to us?!” I demanded of her.

“Because that way people get hungrier faster after they eat and go back for more; it helps the school make more money.” Read More »

The CC Weekly Weigh In: St. Patrick’s Day Nightmares

nightmares.jpg

Kids have Christmas. Lovers have Valentine’s Day. Presidents have President’s day. What do we, the college students of the world, have?

St. Patrick’s day! Woooohooo!!

Only 4 more days until our favorite holiday of the year! Friends! Drinking Games! Kegs and eggs! A full day of debauchery! (Note: different from normal college weekends by the addition of green clothing.) The combination of costumes, Irish music, bar specials and friends makes this the best day of the year. And we won’t let anyone or anything take it away from us.

The CollegeCandy writers weighed in this week on their worst St. Patrick’s day nightmares, real or imagined. We tried to have them tell us their favorite memories, but most people can’t remember St. Patty’s Days of the past for some reason. Weird. Read More »

Shot of the Week: Perfect Jello Shot

j.jpgIt’s officially summer, and this means you’ll be doing two things: going to parties and trying to fit into that swimsuit. Everyone knows Jello is a low fat snack, and vodka has zero carbs. Put those together and what do you have?

The perfect Jello shot.

There’s not a big science to making these squiggly alcoholic snacks, but it is possible to screw them up. A few miserable attempts in college taught me the no-fail ratios, and if you follow them, you’re guaranteed to have the ideal consistency.

Perfect Jello Shots

• 6 oz. flavored Jello (or one large packet)

• 16 oz. boiling water

• 6 oz. cold water

• 10 oz. vodka

Once your 16 oz. of water is boiling, pour the jello packet in and stir until it’s completely dissolved. Shut off the stove and add the cold water and alcohol. Pour the mixture into small paper cups and place the cups in your refrigerator for about two hours.

…And remember, just because they taste like candy, doesn’t mean there’s nothing inside. Jello shots are absorbed slower than liquid alcohol, so don’t overdue it! No one wants to make out with the plastered chick who’s got jello all over her face.

Private: Attack of the Calorie Packs

jellopudding.jpgIt seems like every kind of food or snack is now compressing into some sort of low calorie pack. The explosion of the 100 calorie packs really took off in the past year and the newest, almost laughable, version is the Hostess cupcakes. Three tiny cupcakes in one little package—all for just 100 calories.

Some other fabulous new treats have been turned into low calorie packs. Quaker Mini Delights (rice cakes) with Chocolate Drizzle have just 90 calories a pack. Jell-O pudding came out with three new flavors of sugar-free pudding for just 60 calories per cup: Chocolate Mint Fudge, Moccachino, and Caramel de Leche. The chocolate mint fudge is my favorite because of its rich sugary taste, minus the calories. Read More »
