The Emmys are tonight, which means hot TV actors in tuxedos. I don’t really care who wins any of the awards, I just care that Jon Hamm gets more camera time than Ed O’Neill. This year, tons of swoon-worthy guys are nominated for awards, which means we will be glued to our TVs even if the show lasts 10 hours.

All year long I look forward to award show season, the best time to see my favorite celebs hitting the red carpet looking all kinds of fabulous. Sure, I love seeing who wins the awards and what the “experts” consider the best movie of the year, but everyone knows the best thing about these award shows is checking out what everyone is wearing.

What a celebrity wears on the red carpet is usually the most important thing she can wear all year. It’s always fun to point out the what-was-she-THINKING? outfits, but looking at the most gorgeous dresses is always a pleasure that everyone can indulge in. That is exactly why the majority of the female population (myself included) will be sitting in front of the TV tomorrow night with a bowl of popcorn, drooling over each beautiful dress that struts by.

So who will work the carpet the best? Here are five starlets I know will be looking divine based on their glamorous appearances from Red Carpet’s past.

Penelope Cruz
This year, Cruz is nominated for Best Supporting Actress for her performance in Nine. She always brings the Latin heat, showing off her admirable curves in classic, tasteful gowns. Cruz is the picture of red carpet elegance, and never fails to disappoint.

Kate Winslet
Although Winslet is just a presenter this year and not nominated for an award, she is sure to still be a hit on the red carpet. Winslet brings old-school Hollywood glamour to any award show she attends in simple gowns that are still classically beautiful and perfectly flatter her body

Reese Witherspoon
As a presenter this year, Witherspoon is sure to bring a girly flair to the red carpet. Similar to Winslet and Cruz, she also wears elegant and tasteful dresses, but she adds a pop of color that always complements her and sets her apart, whether it be bright yellow or deep purple.

Halle Berry
Berry’s gowns are definitely never boring. She tends to choose dresses that are form-fitting without revealing too much – just enough so we can all continue to envy her body. She mixes it up with different colors and styles, and I can’t wait to see what she chooses this year as a presenter.

Emily Blunt
Nominated for Best Actress for her performance in The Young Victoria, Blunt is sure to wear something extra fabulous this year. She has mastered the art of looking refined and elegant while still looking a young and fresh. Plus, she’s always down for some sparkle, which I’m looking forward to seeing on the carpet this year. I’m also looking forward to seeing her finest accessory of all, fiance John Krasinski (sorry, couldn’t resist!).

When real-world guys just don’t do it for us (like when they string us along and make us think they want something only to send us an IM saying they’re not looking for something serious….Sorry, I’m bitter), we love to escape to our favorite TV shows and live vicariously through the ladies with great boyfriends, even with all the baggage and dramz. There’s just something about leading men that makes us go crazy with adoration/jealousy/excitement/OMG-THEY-FINALLY-GOT-TOGETHER!

Oh, and the guys on TV are usually so. damn. cute.

But with all the amazing TV shows out there and their equally amazing hunks, how do you pick one to swoon over? I know, it’s a tough choice, but this guide might help you decide which boy is right for you:

Jess Mariano (Gilmore Girls)

When Jess first arrives in Stars Hollow, it’s obvious that he and Rory are going to collide somehow. And when they finally do, after a tumultuous season full of romantic tension, it is awesome. I’m extremely biased, but Jess is, and will forever be, the ultimate TV boyfriend. Sarcastic and mysterious, yet intelligent and (in his own way) caring, Jess is simply the ideal man. Who can resist a leather jacket-clad guy with a Hemingway novel in his back pocket?

Ryan Atwood (The O.C.)

At the start of the series, we get a taste of how bad boy Ryan is going to shake up the posh community of Newport Beach, California that leaves us begging for more. He meets Marissa Cooper, the girl next door, and thus begins a whirlwind romance. Ryan eventually steals Marissa from her banal beau Luke, and our hearts sing when they share their first kiss. Although he comes from a troubled past, he’s really a sweet guy with a caring heart underneath it all.

If you like…a loveable geek:

Seth Cohen (The O.C.)

Seth Cohen made being a nerd a cool thing when the show first debuted. From Batman comics to Dynasty Warriors video games, Seth just screams geek. And yet, Summer still falls for him, as do we all. It’s inevitable, really; he’s sweet, sensitive, and is just too damn cute to resist when he starts rambling. Plus, a Spiderman-style upside down kiss? Isn’t that every girl’s fantasy…and not just mine?

Jim Halpert (The Office)

It’s a familiar story: two best friends who have feelings for each other and, after a long, tormented struggle, finally get together and live happily ever after. Somehow, the writers of The Office managed to skillfully weave such a fairy tale storyline into the mockumentary aspect of the show. They also managed to make Jim absolutely perfect while still grounding him in reality. He’s smart, funny, adorable, and a total sweetheart, even if he is a bit on the dorkier side. But, like Pam, we love him that way!

If you like…the artistic type:

Lucas Scott (One Tree Hill)

Whether you wanted him to end up with Brooke or Peyton, you have to admit that Lucas Scott is one fine specimen of a man. He may have been an athlete in his high school heyday, but in his heart he’s always been a writer. He has the brooding artist thing down perfectly – and it never fails to make us swoon! It’s no surprise that three women on the show (plus the millions of fans out there) all want a piece of him for themselves.

Charlie Pace (Lost)

What is it about a boy with a guitar that drives us crazy? Well, if he’s Charlie Pace, we have other reasons to swoon like mad. It’s easier to overlook his troubled past when you see him with Claire, caring for her and for Aaron as if he were his own son. In addition to being a brooding artist, he’s a real sweetheart. And the accent…oh, that accent!

If you like…someone out-of-this-world:

Max Evans (Roswell)

Roswell may have been a short-lived and little-known show, but the romance between human Liz Parker and alien Max Evans was cosmic in scale. Imagine dating an alien with amazing powers such as healing! Not to mention the complex inner-workings of Max Evans that made him a completely human character in a different way. He’s shy and quiet, more of the sensitive type, and completely in love with Liz. If only I had a guy like that! I could watch the pilot’s opening scene over and over…

Bill Compton (True Blood)

The recent vampire trend has graced both the silver and small screens with un-dead hotties. (Editor’s Note: Anyone else think those two words would never be strung together in a sentence?) But the hottest of them all has to be Bill Compton of True Blood. Besides being, well, gorgeous, he’s a well-mannered gent who dearly loves his human girlfriend and will do whatever it takes to keep her safe. Sure, his language is a bit antiquated, but he can’t help it; he was turned into a vampire when he was a soldier in the Civil War. And I happen to think his old-fashioned vocabulary adds to his charm. I don’t know about you all, but he could call on me any time he wants to!

If you like…a guy who’ll make you feel good better:

Derek Shepherd (Grey’s Anatomy)

McDreamy truly lives up to his nickname on Grey’s Anatomy. He’s a charming, handsome, intelligent doctor – and, conveniently, a bachelor (after his divorce goes through, of course!). Meredith really hit the jackpot with Derek, even if she doesn’t always realize it. Their relationship is proof that something good can come of a drunken one-night-stand, although you have to make sure to go to the bar near the hospital where all the doctors hang out.

Christopher Turk (Scrubs)

Turk and Carla’s romance on Scrubs is often overshadowed by Turk and JD’s bromance, but if you look hard enough, you see a sweet love story. Turk may be somewhat of a buffoon (especially when JD is in the picture), but at heart, he’s a great guy and loves Carla. Plus, a sense of humor is an absolute necessity when it comes to a guy. Turk has plenty of it, so if you like to clown around with your man, he’s not a bad choice at all. He can also be quite sentimental when the situation calls for it.

If you like…a party animal:

Chuck Bass (Gossip Girl)

When it comes to Chuck Bass, you either love him or hate him. Although he often is a disgusting pig of a man, you have to admit that he has style. Chuck Bass parties only with the best, so if you’re sole purpose is to have a good time, get on the guest list to one of Bass’s bashes. If he likes you, he’ll make sure you have the time of your life. In fact, he’ll guarantee it. Oh, did you feel that shiver down your spine?

John Krasinski

We all love Jim Halpert from The Office. He is utterly adorable and clearly too smart for a desk job selling paper. And, as luck would have it, so is the actor that plays him! John Krasinski studied theater at Brown University, even writing a play as his honors thesis. Not bad, Halpert, not bad at all.

Kal Penn

Don’t let his antics in Harold and Kumar fool you, because Kal Penn is one smart guy. His character on House was written out of the show so that Penn could take up the post of Associate Director of the White House Office of Public Liaison in the Obama administration. Plus, he’s currently pursuing a graduate certificate in international security at Stanford. Stanford? Obama? He’s making me swoon already!

Hugh Grant

We all know that Hugh Grant is a little…well, awkward, in the way that British actors often are. But he’s not just a bumbling, pretty man – he’s a smart, bumbling, pretty man! Grant attended Oxford University on a scholarship, studying literature and even graduating with honors. That explains why he was so wonderful as Edward Ferrars in Sense & Sensibility!

Jon Stewart

Jon Stewart is pretty much the rockstar of late-night satirical news. Despite his height and, well, age, he’s one silver fox! But that’s not all; Stewart attended the college of William and Mary and is the host of The Daily Show, perhaps the only news show that actually forces the viewer to think critically about politics and events in the news. And, admit it, you try to incorporate his musings and witticisms into your political science and government papers. You know you do.

Matt Damon

Matt Damon must’ve had himself in mind when he co-wrote the screenplay of Good Will Hunting with his buddy Ben Affleck. Damon attended Harvard University and studied English there, although before he could graduate, he dropped out to pursue his acting career. We can forgive that, Matt, since your career has been a success…and since you’re so nice to look at…

James Franco

James Franco has a reputation for being – well, a bit too similar to his drug-dealing character in Pineapple Express, although he’s a major hottie even with the greasy hair. But he’s definitely no slacker; just look at his pursuit of higher education. Franco attended UCLA, graduating with a degree in English, and is currently pursuing an MFA in Writing at Columbia University and studying filmmaking at New York University. I have to say, I’m impressed with his ability to juggle two schools as well as a movie career. Now that takes a lot of talent!

Chris Noth

We know Chris Noth for his role as the enigmatic Mr. Big on Sex and the City. And, as you can see, he’s one good-looking man. But did you know that he received an MFA from the Yale School of Drama, acting in twenty-five plays while he was there? One thing’s for sure: this man was born to act. And his ability to make Carrie Bradshaw (and her loyal viewers) swoon is proof of that!

George Clooney

It is only fitting that George Clooney continues to help others after achieving stardom thanks in part to his role on ER in the 90s. Now, he is not only an outspoken liberal and supporter of President Barack Obama, but he is also a leading voice in the campaign to end the genocide in Darfur. Time Magazine named him one of the 100 Most Influential People for “using star power to illuminate the crisis in Darfur.” Now here’s a man using his celebrity power for good. A lot of celebs can learn a thing or two from him. *cough cough Paris Hilton cough cough*

Will Smith

Newsweek has it right: Will Smith is definitely the most powerful actor on the planet. He’s gorgeous, a successful actor, a musician – and, pretty damn smart! Smith once won a scholarship to MIT, but he turned it down in order to pursue music. Not a bad move, Will. Look at where you are now!

Edward Norton

Edward Norton is the actor’s actor. He is very serious about his craft and reluctant to embrace his celebrity status (as evidenced by the furrowed brow and whisper of “Who’s he?” that is undoubtedly falling from your lips right now). The fact that he studied history at Yale University might explain his uncanny level of dedication and discipline. Norton is a certainly gentleman and a scholar…and quite a good-looking specimen!

Like our previous girl crush, Natalie Portman, Maggie really does seem to have it all: beauty, brains, an impressive list of roles and award nominations, and a totally cute daughter named Ramona who took no toll on her model-like, 5 foot 9 inch body.

Whenever I’m discussing my female loves with friends, she always comes up as the “cool, retro looking” actress, and you gotta love an alternative to all the Paris Hiltons out there (no Paris, I do not want to be your new BFF). Her unconventional beauty reminds me of the Hollywood starlets of the past, and this paired with her immense talent qualifies her as my girl crush of the week.

Other reasons why we love her?

She has managed to avoid a negative rep and is never caught by the paparazzi looking cracked out or overexposed, which is more than some Hollywood moms can say for themselves. (Britney… Britney’s private parts…). She has a bachelor’s degree from Columbia University and is very politically active, having spoken out against the Iraq war a number of times and campaigned on behalf of a number of political organizations.

In addition to starring in films, she performs onstage and sings – recently, she recorded songs for the soundtrack of the 2005 drama Happy Endings, in which she starred.

She’s starred in a ton of great movies ranging from the indie hits Donnie Darko and Secretary to the blockbusters Stranger than Fiction and The Dark Knight, and she manages to model for Miu Miu, Reebok and Agent Provocateur on the side. (She took over Kate Moss’s position as the face of the racy lingerie line, which gives her a ton of points…)

She’s not afraid of racy, spunky roles (she had a full-frontal nude scene in Secretary), and she’s not overly worried about what other people think of her. While breast-feeding her daughter, she was snapped sitting at a restaurant with her boob hangin’ out for the whole world to see. (I guess she over-exposed a bit here, but I still don’t think we can compare her to good old Brit…).

She has been dating actor Peter Saarsgard for 7 years, which is pretty rare among Hollywood starlets. She’s been quoted saying that they’ll “get married sometime in the next 20 years,” which I think is kind of cool. And she’s royalty! Her father, poet and director Stephen Gyllenhaal, is a descendant of a Swedish family ennobled by Queen Cristina of Sweden in the 1600s. She will star alongside John Krasinski in the upcoming movie Away We Go, which will be released this year.

We spent so much time checking out the fashion from last night’s Emmy Awards that we almost forgot about da boys. And boy did they look goooooood.

There were the usual drool-worthy dudes – John Stewart, David Boreanaz, Adrien Grenier, Patrick Dempsey, (and hottie newcomer John Hamm) – and then there were the surprises. The guys who were always so-so, but somehow looked so good last night that we wanted to hump the flat screen.

My favorite: Jeremy Piven.

Second Best: Josh (normally nerdy) Groban.

I don’t know if it was Piven’s 5 o’clock shadow or Groban’s charming little smile, but these guys looked really f–ing good. Better than the rest. Yes, even John Krasinski.
