I love chick flicks. Lots of them. There are so many amazing movies about women and for women, some about love, and some about life, that are labeled as chick flicks. And I’m not ashamed to admit that I’ve watched them more times than I can keep track of.

So with that in mind I thought I’d dedicate this week’s weekly ten to my favorite chick flicks of all time. Some are recent and some are not so recent,  but they’re all pretty damn great.

10. Miss Congeniality. Oh Sandra Bullock, how I love you! It’s refreshing to watch a movie and see a woman who’s more comfortable holding a gun than she is walking in heels. She doesn’t need a man, but she gets one any way and that’s kind of great. Don’t you think?

9. Thelma and Louise. Girl power, ladies. Girl power. This is a story about friendship and fun (and felonies). Even if they do end up driving off a cliff together at the end of it, they do it together, right? Oh don’t look at me like that. It’s a fun movie.

8. Sixteen Candles. Every girl needs to see this movie at least once. It should be a rule. Because yes it’s outdated and yes no one would ever forget a girl’s sixteenth birthday anymore (She wouldn’t let them), but  this one is still so relatable. At the very least, we should all be forced to watch that dance scene before heading off to our own first big dance. It totally puts things in perspective.

7.  Dirty Dancing. Nobody puts baby in the corner. So that line might be a little bit cliché, but it’s also iconic. There’s no way I could make a list of the best chick flicks ever and not have the movie that gave us the time of our lives on here somewhere. Plus, you know, it’s Patrick Swayze.

6. When Harry Met Sally. Can a guy and a girl ever be just friends? Well the answer is absolutely not. And the evidence? This movie. But not only did this chick flick tackle that age-old question but it also gave us Meg Ryan faking it in a restaurant. Best. Scene. Ever.

5. The Devil Wears Prada. It’s Meryl Streep and Anne Hathaway. Together these two could make anything work. But they didn’t need to do much with this one, a chick flick that wasn’t just about the romance, but rather about the struggle to find a balance between work and real life, and trying to determine how much you’re willing to give up along the way.  Plus, the clothes are  fab.

4. 10 Things I Hate About You. Heath Ledger. Need I say more? But no, really, what could have been just another teen movie, another chick flick about a girl and a guy and prom, does something different.  With its strong female lead, quirky characters, and Heath Ledger singing “I Love You Baby” on the bleachers how could anyone not love this movie?

3. Breakfast at Tiffany’s. It’s Audrey Hepburn. I don’t think it’s even possible for her to make a bad movie. But it’s probably the rain scene that lands this one the third spot. That and the adorable cat named cat. Who actually does belong to someone. Just like Audrey.

2. Bridget Jones’ Diary. When it comes down to it I probably love this movie because it’s a modern day retelling of Pride and Prejudice. But also because she tries to keep a diary. And because she tries (and fails) to keep the same new year’s resolutions as all of us. And a little bit because of Colin Firth and Hugh Grant.

1. Pretty Woman. My absolute favorite chick flick of  all time. I can’t remember a time when I didn’t love this movie (which means I was probably watching it when I was way too young.) And sure you can laugh at say it’s completely unrealistic and it’s about a hooker who falls in love with a sleazy business man. But that doesn’t matter. I love this movie. Because of “I want the fairy tale” and “Big Mistake. Huge” and the infamous piano scene, and a younger, cuter Richard Gere.

Glamour had listed their top six movie kisses of all time. And I have to say, I was a little disappointed.

The kisses they chose were certainly swoon worthy, but I didn’t think all of them deserved a top spot. And there were other kisses that were most definitely missing. Lots of kisses missing. Kisses that needed to be mentioned. So I selflessly spent hours and hours poring over YouTube video after YouTube video to compose this list for you, my top ten movie kisses of all time.

10. Jack and Rose, Titanic. Leo has come a long way since his days of freezing to death alongside a glacier, but I don’t think our generation will ever let him forget his days as a teen heart drop. This kiss, though not particularly impressive, sums up our teeny bopper days perfectly. It’s nostalgic and sweet and we’ll never let go.

9. Blane and Andie, Pretty in Pink. This list wouldn’t be complete without at least one Brat Pack shout out. And for me at least, it couldn’t be anything other than this movie. That final scene in the parking lot when Jack and Andie reunite at the senior prom after a huge fight just epitomizes everything I love and hate about teen angst and chick flicks. It’s cheesy and incredibly cliché but I would be lying if I said I didn’t wish something like that had happened at my high school prom.

8. Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth, Pride and Prejudice. Maybe it’s just the literature geek in me, but I find the kiss between Darcy and Elizabeth at the end of the 2007 adaption of Pride and Prejudice to be so romantic. It’s not particularly passionate or steamy, but it’s intimate all the same. It’s a kiss viewers have been waiting for throughout the entire movie. The buildup-from the angry rain arguments, to the subtle hand holding, to the forehead touching makes it totally worthy it.

7. Edward and Vivian, Pretty Woman. This one is here more for the dialogue that accompanies the kiss than the kiss itself, but I still felt like it needed to be mentioned. Richard Gere’s character has just climbed up a fire escape to get to Julia Roberts even though he’s desperately afraid of heights. He reaches Vivian and asks, “So what happens after her climbs up and rescues her?”  She says, “She rescues him right back.”  Then they kiss.

6. Edward and Bella, New Moon. I debated putting this one on here, really I did. Because there’s just so much “OMGz” drama that comes along with anything Twilight related. It reminds me of screaming teenage girls and Robert Pattinson’s hair, and Kristen Stewart’s inability to smile (and lots of articles I read in my feminism class last semester). But I put all of that aside, and I’m asking you to do the same. Because that kiss they shared at the end of New Moon, that was hot.

5. Lady and Tramp, Lady and the Tramp. I can never hear the lyrics to “That’s Amore” without thinking of these two. Just the sweetness and innocence of these two little dogs sharing meatballs and slurping on the same piece of spaghetti is too adorable for words. Cutest kiss ever.

4. Peter and Mary Jane, Spiderman. If it’s iconic enough for Seth and Summer to reenact on The OC, then its iconic enough to make this list. Upside down and in the rain, that kiss had every girl wanting to meet Toby McGuire in a dark alley.

3. Rhett and Scarlett, Gone With the Wind. Plastered on every movie poster ever made for this movie, this one is a classic. Against a bright red and orange sunset, Scarlett kisses Rhett just before he goes off to war. These two may not have a happy ending, but this kiss almost makes that worth it.

2. Fred and Holly, Breakfast at Tiffany’s. I apologize to those of you who are not fans of Audrey, but this kiss just had to be here. It had to. Its Audrey and George, looking fabulous in their trench coats, as rain comes down around them and they scream about not belonging to anyone at all. Then, all of a sudden they’re professing their undying love for one another. And kissing. This is the stuff of romance, folks.

1. Noah and Allie, The Notebook. I tried to be objective when ranking these kisses. But before I even sat down to write this, I knew Noah and Allie were going to be my number one. When I think of movie kisses, this is what I think of.  In my opinion nothing can quite compare. I mean first off, it’s raining, and second of all they’re fighting, and third, these two have been pining away for each other for years.  All that pent up emotion, and anger and passion finally explode. In the best way possible. They just can’t be beat. Period. The end. Cue the hot sex.

I don’t know about you ladies, but Sixpence None the Richer’s Kiss Me is on repeat in my head right now. And I’m just going to go with it…and maybe head over to YouTube and check out some of those movie clips again.

Sigh.

“Eat Pray Love” is a non-fiction book written by Elizabeth Gilbert. Gilbert has found herself with the perfect American life: a gorgeous house, a good husband and a successful career. But, she is consistently unhappy and one day realizes that she just doesn’t want to be married anymore. This “perfect life” is just not for her. So she leaves her husband and after being inspired by three different countries and their cultures, she decides to spend a year traveling to Italy, India and Indonesia. She chooses Italy because she has always wanted to learn Italian, India because she has recently gotten into the yoga lifestyle and Indonesia because she traveled there once and was told by a medicine man that she would return. She uses the advance from this promised book to fund her whirlwind adventure and sets off.

This book was somewhat of a sensation. For a year, it felt like someone I knew was always reading this. So, of course, I resisted, as any good book snob does. I’m really happy that I picked it up though! Gilbert is a charming and hilarious narrator. She’s so open with her experiences and feelings, it seems like I’m reading a letter from an old friend. I constantly found myself smiling while reading this one, that is, when I wasn’t laughing at her quick wit. But, besides being entertaining, I also found this one quite inspiring.

I think most of us dream of taking a year from our hectic lives and going to exotic places simply because we want to. I was so jealous of Gilbert’s trip, but, as I said, also inspired. “Eat Pray Love” really reminds you to be grateful for your life and all the wonderful things you have and to celebrate your blessings. It’s also courageous and, I believe, has probably served as a wake-up call for many people who are just rushing through life, instead of actually living.

I think “Eat Pray Love” is a perfect book to finish off the summer with. Go into your school year with a clear head and your goals set. But most importantly, remember to enjoy yourself and always so something you love!

What’s going on this week? Apparently not much besides Eat Pray Love. At least that’s all I’m hearing about these days in Hollywood. I swear, if I see Julia Roberts sitting innocently on that bench suggestively eating her cup of fro yo one more time, I’m going to scream. Eat it like a woman, Roberts. Stop looking at the birds, OK? At first I really did want to grab my girls and sneak a tube of cookie dough into the theater for a little Eat Pray Love action. But now? I’d rather eat, eat, sleep.

Anyway, besides the cutesy movie about a women traveling the world to find herself (I personally don’t need to leave America and In & Out Burgers to find myself), what else is going on in Hollywood, you ask?  Well, Rachel Bilson recently went on a Costco shopping spree. (Welcome to singlehood, homegirl!) Aaaaand that’s about it.

J-Lo’s Diva Ways Ruin Her Chances As An Idol Judge. J-Lo was given a chance at career redemption on a silver platter courtesy of American Idol, and what did she do? Chuck that platter across the room. Don’t you know this diva only accepts platinum, FOX?  Due to her high demands and general diva-ness, JLo has officially lost the gig… and any future in Hollywood. FOX refuses to comment, but I don’t. Way to go, Jenny from the Block. Being a super bitch doesn’t always pay off, does it?

Bill O’Reilly gets all up in Jennifer Aniston’s business. Not sure why anyone cares what he thinks, but O’Reilly made some snide comment about Aniston’s choice to let science determine her future as a single mother, reportedly saying her decision was “destructive to society” and “diminishing the role of dad.” Obviously, Jen handled his douchebaggery with poise and class. Way to go, Aniston. Can we all just leave her alone now?

Fantasia Is Headed Home From the Hospital After Suicide Attempt. After overdosing on aspirin and sleep aids, Fantasia Barrino is home and doing OK.  Though her people are claiming it was all a big misunderstanding, we’re just hoping she gets help and gets better.

Judge Revel Removes Herself From Lindsay’s Case. It’s official, La Lohan’s judge (Marsha Revel) has had enough of those leggings and straggly blond hair.  She has removed herself from the case after allegations she improperly contacted people involved in the case. Did she DM Samantha Ronson on Twitter?? Not quite.  Reports state she contacted “participants and experts” without notifying lawyers in advance.  Whatever it is, she’s outta there, which seems to be quite a trend when it comes to Lohan’s case.

Glee Clothing Line on Sale Sunday! I’m so excited I could break into song right on my kitchen counter! The fashion line will be available exclusively at Macy’s and will include t-shirts, tops and hoodies priced $19.99-$34.99.  Wait, does this mean there will be Cheerio inspired uniform tops? Finn inspired jock-wear? Sue Sylvester wind pants? Be still my heart.

Swiftie has released a new song about drawing an X through an old boyfriend’s face in permanent marker.  It’s called ‘Permanent Marker’ in case you missed it and despite the terrible song name, it’s surprisingly sweet and cute for such passionately angry lyrics.

Christiano Ronaldo Reaches 10 Million Likes On Facebook. This dude is becoming cooler than J-Beebsie. He’s reached 10 million likes over Facebook and counting! I think it has something to do with pouring ice cold water all over his face. I would like to take this moment to cordially thank H2O. That is all.

Joe Jonas Gets Arrested. Sorta. I’m really not sure what to say about this.

Nick Cannon Nominates Mariah to be Next American Idol Judge. Oh Nick Cannon, this is so cute! He’s nominating his little love muffin Mariah to be the next American Idol judge.  He says, “I know she would love to do Idol, let’s start a campaign!” With Jessica Simpson and J-Lo out of the running, Nick and Mariah’s dream may just come true.

Oh and one more thing before I go!  I’m sorry but Marc Jacobs is making my face melt off and steaming up my reading glasses (yes, I’m wearing them, and yes I can barely see) in the new Harper’s Bazaar photo shoot. Yum. O.

Julia Roberts, where you been girl?! For a while, you were the hottest mama in Hollywood. Your megawatt smile, great acting chops and beachy waves won us over (and also made us intensely jealous), then out of nowhere, you disappeared. Poof! You had to go get married and have babies…twins and all. We had to salvage what we can and pretend we were happy for you. But thank god you’re back. We’ve really missed you.

In honor of your return to the silver screen as Elizabeth Gilbert in the movie adaptation of the book, “Eat Pray Love” (which is, BTW, honestly the best soul-searching summer read ever), we here at CollegeCandy like to pay homage to your top 5 roles. No matter who or what you played, from a classy (relatively speaking, of course) hooker to a mastermind thief’s wife, we can’t help but love you.

1) Vivian Ward in Pretty Woman

Seriously. I don’t know a single person who doesn’t love this movie. Not only does Julia Roberts make the transformation from ugly duckling to beautiful swan, she gets to do the sexy with Richard Gere. Yes, freaken Richard Gere. He’s ancient but still hot. She was every hooker’s idol. Go Julia!

2) Tinkerbell in Hook

Deviating from her usual rom-coms, Julia took up the role of Tinkerbell in a new adaptation of the much beloved story, Peter Pan and Captain Hook. Julia was funny and witty and actually looked good in green (unlike the rest of the human race). Of course, when she sprinkled pixie dust and flashed her Hollywood smile, we all melted.

3) Erin Brockovich in Erin Brockovich

The role of a lifetime, Julia Roberts played Erin Brockovich, a real-life, cut-the-crap, no-nonsense single mother of three who managed to uncover a secret about a major corporation. Not only did Julia win Best Actress for her portrayal and solidified her career as a serious actress, but the dress she wore (by Valentino) to the Academy Awards is still ranked as one of the best dresses ever worn. Yowza.

4) Tess Ocean in Ocean’s 11 and Ocean’s 12

So who do you cast when you need an actress to play the wife of a mastermind thief? You cast Julia Roberts, duh. Not only was she witty and smart, Julia was the perfect foil to her street-smart George Clooney husband. I’m starting to see a trend with casting her and insanely famous and sexy men. I want to hate her, but I just can’t.

5) Anna Scott in Notting Hill

Probably one of my favorite movies starring Julia, the actress played, well, an actress, in the romantic comedy co-starring Hugh Grant. Probably because I was always insanely jealous that she got to make out and “whoopsie daisy” Hugh Grant, the whole movie was just a 2-hour feel good session that made me want to become an insanely famous actress who falls in love with a normal British man. I mean, it can still happen right?

- And while we’re talking about things people care too much about, what’s the deal with all the people sipping the Miley Cyrus Haterade?

- Fall clothes are starting to show up in all our favorite stores and that means one thing: SUMMER SALES.

Okay, so how excited are you for Eat, Pray, Love to finally come out?  Because I know I’m absolutely dying to see Julia Roberts and James Franco and Javier Bardem all together in one glorious movie.

If you haven’t read the book (which I highly recommend you do), here’s a quick rundown:  Julia Roberts’ character has a “perfect” husband, gorgeous home, and dream career.  Turns out the girl who has it all, actually doesn’t- she’s completely unhappy.  Throwing caution to the wind, she divorces her husband, takes leave from her job, and sets out for a yearlong adventure where she plans four months each in Italy, India, and Bali.  Her goals are simply to enjoy life and get back in touch with herself.

Well, I think we can all relate to the confusion and pain of ending a relationship, but unfortunately most of us don’t have the time or resources to do it Julia-style.  Luckily, it doesn’t take a million frequent flier miles to mend a broken heart.  Here are some real life ways to Eat, Pray, and Love your way back to fabulous:

Eat
Dinner parties aren’t just for couples.  Call up your best gal pals and invite them over for a night of bottomless wine and delicious pasta.  There’s nothing like comfort food to get you back on track.  Don’t worry about the carbs or going to the gym the next day.  Just put your feet up (preferably not on the table) and laugh a little.  It’ll feel good.

If you want to take the party on the road, stage a food tour of your campus.  Every school has those guilty pleasure places you go out of your way to avoid because they’re just so darn good (hello Chick-fil-A!), you’d eat yourself into a food coma.  Now is the time to dive in head first.  Tackle those waffle fries, enjoy that pizza, and wash it all down with an extra-large Diet Coke.

Pray
If you’ve never tried yoga or meditation before, then let me welcome you with a great big Namaste!  Both practices work wonders to clear your mind and make you feel energized.  Check with your college to see if your health center offers classes; if they require a pre-paid pass, ask if you can sit in on a class as a guest.  Also, iTunes offers free podcasts that specialize in guided mediation and yoga.

Download a few and you can practice right in your room.  No need to change out of those sweatpants or wash your hair just yet!

Love
Love yourself, all of yourself – not just your funny personality; you know you’ve got great legs, too. Grab an iced tea, sit in a comfy chair, and listen to your iPod for thirty uninterrupted minutes.  Savoring the details of your day can do wonders for your state of mind.  So claim some “Me Time” and do something you love.

Love your friends. The fact of the matter is that when you’re in a relationship, sometimes your friendships can suffer.  However, now is the time to plan girls’ nights and rent all those chick flicks you missed out on (because some loser needed to watch Die Hard for the twentieth time).  Round up the troops, throw on some sweats, and have a little good old fashioned, guy-free fun.  After all, laughter and margaritas are the best medicine.

Finally, get back out there.  Take your time.  Whether you need two weeks or two months to get back on your feet, don’t feel rushed but do acknowledge that eventually you need to reenter the dating world.  Sitting at home weekend after weekend isn’t healthy.  Human contact is the spice of life!  Put on a hot outfit, opt for the higher heels, grab your besties and chat it up with a cute stranger.

Even if you don’t find love right away, know that your Javier Bardem is out there somewhere.  At least that’s what I’m keeping my fingers crossed for…
