One Very Awesome Reason We Salute You, Khadijah Williams

[Besides being the month of St. Patrick's Day and (really old) CollegeCandy's editor's birthday, March is Women's History Month. Instead of honoring the great women of our past, however, we at CC want to honor the women they inspired, and who now inspire us. Every Wednesday this month we've highlighted a woman who is currently dominating her field and showing us that we can really do anything. Like Chelsea Handler, the woman of late night comedy; Kathryn Bigelow, this year's best director; and Gwen Stefani, rockstar mommy; and Ellen Degeneres, talk show host and gay rights activist.]

Women’s History Month is (unforch) coming to an end, and this week, it’s time to pay homage to a very different type of hero. All month long we’ve been telling you why we worship various female celebs based on their fierce fashion or sense of humor. To finish out the month, I want to share with you all the story of Khadijah Williams, a freshman at Harvard University who proves that a woman, no matter where she’s from or what means she has access to, can achieve anything with the right amount of determination.

Williams was born in Brooklyn, NY, to a 14-year-old mother who soon moved her to California and gave birth to Jeanine, her younger sister. They slept  in shelters and motels and ate out of garbage. Still, her mother sent her to school. Khadijah first realized she had a gift in the 3rd grade when she received amazing scores on a state standardized test, and at the young age of 8 became determined to never let anything stand in her way of an education. The CC Weekly Weigh In: Inspirational Women

March is Women’s History Month and in honor of that we’ve been taking some time to highlight and salute some female powerhouses that inspire us. There are just so many women out there doing incredible things, which is hard to remember when women tend only to get recognized for boobs (Heidi Montag), sex scandals (Tiger’s “friends”) and weight (Jessica Simpson). But they’re out there, doing their thing and inspiring us to break down barriers, go for our goals and be our best selves.

So who are these wonderful women? This week the CollegeCandy writers share who inspires them most. Who inspires you?

Kelly – University of Iowa: Definitely my mom. She didn’t go to college but still managed to work her way up the corporate ladder to a wonderful, well-paying job and always tries to instill the same values into me.

Ness – Sheridan: As weird as it sounds, probably Sue Johanson. I’ve grown up watching her shows, and I think she’s both hilarious and incredibly smart. I just wanna hug her!

Jessica – Hofstra: Anna Wintour, the editor-in-chief of Vogue. She’s probably the most powerful woman in the fashion and magazine industry. She might be tough but she has also achieved an enormous amount and I can only wish to be that successful. Read More »

5 Reasons We Salute You, Gwen Stefani

[Besides being the month of St. Patrick's Day and CollegeCandy's editor's birthday, March is Women's History Month. Instead of honoring the great women of our past, however, we at CC want to honor the women they inspired and who now inspire us. Every Wednesday this month we are going to highlight a woman who is currently dominating her field and showing us that we can really do anything. Like Chelsea Handler, the woman of late night comedy. Or Kathryn Bigelow, this year's best director. These women are strong, powerful, famous, and doing their thing even better than their male counterparts, so let's give them the attention they deserve!]

I remember lying in my bedroom and listening to No Doubt’s “Tragic Kingdom” on repeat for days at a time. I remember how excited I was when my dad surprised me with 4 tickets to the show for me and my friends. I remember watching Gwen Stefani rock out on stage in neon pants with suspenders and knowing, at that moment, that I wanted to be just like her. And that was before she became a rock superstar, solo artist, fashion designer and really awesome mom.

Now, 10 years later, I don’t have her voice, her talent, or her ability to wear crop tops (my abs are a little looser than Ms. Stefani’s….yes, even after her two children), but I am even more inspired by this Jack(ie) of all trades. And here are five reasons I salute Ms. Gwen Stefani: Read More »

Weekly Wrap Up: Kiss Me, I’m (Not Really) Irish

St.Patrick’s Day week has officially begun its course, and I am looking forward to it (since I just discovered everyone celebrates before, after and during the holiday).  Even though I do not have a lick of Irish in me, you better believe I am sporting my neon green wig and the rest of my green ensemble. From now through the end of March. And since everyone is sure to be consuming lots of green beer this weekend, it’s good to know that we’ll all be better off for it.

But, let’s try for just a few minutes before diving into the luck o’ the Irish, to look at the week that was:

- We learned Lindsay Lohan is clearly running out of the “revenue” she gained from her leggings line, because she has resorted to suing an innocent T.V. commercial. Milk-a-wha?

- We discovered jobs after college, are indeed possible! Yet another reason to celebrate this weekend.

- We welcomed back our favorite cast from the Upper East Side this week on Gossip Girl. Thank goodness, I needed a little Chuck Bass in my life…now if only I could get him in my bed.

- We looked at all of the awkward elements Facebook has to offer. Read More »

If you are reading this right now, I think it’s safe to say you have a computer to procrastinate dabble into  the latest breaking news.  Fresh off the press is Kathryn Bigelow’s fantastic ‘Best Director’ win at the Oscars Sunday night for her recent film, The Hurt Locker. Talk about an amazing moment in Hollywood; her win for ‘Best Director’ marked the first ever win by a woman. This (and the fact she beat her ex husband in the race to Oscar victory) is only one reason we are in awe of this woman.

Here are five reasons Kathryn Bigelow is an inspiration to us all: Read More »
