Dear America: Let us Actually Celebrate the Holidays!

Alright, here’s the deal: Target, Macy’s Inc., Gap Inc., Kohl’s Corp., Toys “R” Us Inc. and Best Buy Co. are all opening on Thanksgiving to boost sales. Target employees will have to start their shift at 11 pm, meaning in order to survive the Black Friday madness they have to sleep in the afternoon. They have to sleep to prepare for work instead of spending time with their families on a holiday that is about giving thanks for the things you love. Target employee Anthony Hardwick has started a petition, which has already gained over 37,000 signatures in protest of the change in holiday hours.

I say good for you, Mr. Hardwick! What is going on with the holiday craziness? I remember when the holidays were actually celebrated in the month that they fell. I used to go into stores in October and only see Halloween decorations, but in recent years it seems corporations are trying to fast forward everything all the time. I don’t want to see Christmas decorations in October! I don’t want to see cornucopias and turkeys until November 1. And I most certainly don’t want people to be forced to give up one of the most family oriented holidays for the sake of Christmas sales! Read More »

Win Lauren Conrad Jewelry from Kohl’s [Giveaway]

Fall is officially here and I’m drinking Pumpkin Spice Lattes like there is no tomorrow. When I’m not chugging down $45 drinks, I’m splurging on sweaters, apples (nothing like a crisp fall apple) and fall-foliage-inspired clothing. Which means one thing. I’m broke. Damn that burnt orange zip-up that I just had to have. Anyways if you’re also fall-broke like me, don’t worry, because we have a treat for you. The ultimate fall accessory to top of your new wardrobe — Lauren Conrad Jewelry! Your favorite stylish galpal is giving away FOUR necklaces to FOUR lucky readers.

You can’t pass a magazine rack, turn on the TV or browse online without hearing about Lauren Conrad. She’s made a name for herself as an actress, fashion designer and New York Times bestselling author. In 2009, Lauren launched her LC Lauren Conrad collection exclusively at Kohl’s. 8 Under $20: Kohl’s

One of my favorite stores to shop for cute clothes is Kohl’s. One reason I love it so much is because it’s always been there for me. So many times I’ve needed something last minute, like a pair of slacks for a job interview or the perfect pair of shoes for an outfit, and I can find the perfect solution almost instantly at Kohl’s, while other stores didn’t have anything. On top of all that, I love that mostly everything is pretty affordable — especially when there’s a great sale (and there’s almost always some kind of sale going on). Check out these great picks from Kohl’s for under $20!

Surprisingly Cute: Kohl’s [GALLERY]

We all have our go-to stores that we, uh, go to when we need to stock up on some new wardrobe essentials (or when we have an hour to kill and the mall reaches out and wraps us in its warm embrace). But what about all those other stores? The ones that you walk past on your way to Auntie Anne’s without a second glance? The “mom” stores, the old department stores, the stores that don’t start with “Forever” and end with “21″? Surprise! Many of those stores are filled with major cuteness that you’re missing out on! (Except Chico’s – keep walking, little lady.) We know you’re not one to pass up a cute cami, so we scoured these under-the-radar shops (Walmart? New York and Company??) and pulled out all the goodness you never realized existed.

Since I live in Canada, and rarely make it down to the US, I haven’t actually stepped foot in a Kohl’s before. There are several similar stores to Kohl’s around me, and one thing I can say is that I would never go browsing the clothing aisles in any of them. I mean, my mom buys sheets there.

However, if you’ve been thinking the same think about Kohl’s, it’s time to throw out the ‘tude and get your shop on.

The Kohl’s online store has become one of my go-tos for Fashion Porn and Shop Your Closet. Every time I pull an item to use in one of these posts, I curse the fact that Kohl’s doesn’t ship to Canada (neither does Target – seriously, what do the discount fashion Gods have against us?) Why such a love for Kohl’s? Well, beyond the fact that everything is c-h-e-a-p and then they throw an additional 30% off on top of that, the stuff is cute. Like their line, Simply Vera by Vera Wang. Unlike most diffusion lines, this one is available 24/7 so you don’t have to fight throngs of women to get the goodies before they all run out. “Fashion designer” (if you can call her that) Lauren Conrad also has her line available at Kohl’s, and while it’s nothing extraordinary, there’s some great pieces to choose from in a reasonable price range.

If I haven’t sold you on checking out Kohl’s next time you need new clothes, maybe these nine items will help. Read More »

Fashion Porn: Tweed Orgy

Tweed might make you think of a stereotypical professor - the old man (who doesn’t know how to use email) with elbow patches on the tweed blazer he wears every single day, the one that looks like he’s wearing since he started teaching 30 odd years ago. Well throw this image out the window, because tweed is a gorgeous fabric that should be in every college girl’s (and guy’s for that matter) wardrobe.

This gorgeous textured fabric is perfect for fall, especially for the college girls. It’s a thicker fabric that will keep you warm. It comes in several neutral shades, making it the perfect compliment to your rich colored tops. And while the tweed blazer is always a classic, if you feel too stuffy in one, there are many alternatives to work it into your wardrobe. Think winter shorts, dresses, bags, and even the knee-high socks that are so popular this season.

So forget about Professor Boring McTweed and embrace the new tweed of 2010.

Fashion Porn: Lovely Lace

Every morning when I get off the subway to go to school, I have to walk right past Forever 21. And it’s torture.  School been in session for three weeks now, and there has been this super hot navy lace dress (I think it’s a dress, but you never know with that store…) every time I walk by.  Seeing as I don’t REALLY need another dress (remember how I bought 3 in the spring?) I’ve been trying really hard not to go in and buy it in all its gorgeous, lacy glory.  So far I’ve been successful, thanks to the fact that my classes start before the store opens (which might be the only redeeming thing about 9am class).

The good news for me and every other girl out there with a closet full of frocks: dresses aren’t the only way to incorporate lace this season. This dainty, feminine fabric is on everything right now (both in and out of the bedroom), even showing up in some new and unexpected ways. Our girls over at CollegeFashion have even put it on their Back to School shopping list; do you even need another reason to stock up?

Oh you do? Well here are 15.

(And if you do happen to find and purchase that little navy lace dress, let me know so I can live vicariously through your closet.)

Fashion Porn: Olive Orgy

If you haven’t caught on by now, it’s official: I’m smitten with all things military-inspired.  Despite the short summer season, by the time fall clothes begin to hit shelves, I’m already swooning over cardigans, boots and fall jackets.  After spending all summer trying to dress in ways to prevent heat exhaustion (and hide pit stains), I crave layers and structured clothing.

Sure I love cute summer dresses, strappy sandals and bright colors, but right now all I want is olive (and not just garnishing a martini).  Olive is technically a shade of chartreuse – meaning it’s partially between yellow and green. When it is closer to yellow, it’s referred to as ‘olive’ and when it’s closer to green it’s called ‘olive drab.’  (There, that’s your color lesson of the day!)  Olive drab was the standard color of fabric for American military uniforms in World War II – hence the association with the military trend.

This year there are many pieces, both military-inspired and otherwise, made in olive, meaning you have one more neutral to incorporate into your everyday life. One of the best things about this color is that since it’s quite similar to the color of dirt you can wear your olive goods one more time before you have to wash them. (Score!) And if the structured pieces with masculine details aren’t your choice of garnish, try an olive colored jersey top or maybe an accessory, because there are so many choices out there! Read More »
