[Besides being the month of St. Patrick's Day and CollegeCandy's editor's birthday, March is Women's History Month. Instead of honoring the great women of our past, however, we at CC want to honor the women they inspired and who now inspire us. Every Wednesday this month we are going to highlight a woman who is currently dominating her field and showing us that we can really do anything. Like Chelsea Handler, the woman of late night comedy. Or Kathryn Bigelow, this year's best director. These women are strong, powerful, famous, and doing their thing even better than their male counterparts, so let's give them the attention they deserve!]
I remember lying in my bedroom and listening to No Doubt’s “Tragic Kingdom” on repeat for days at a time. I remember how excited I was when my dad surprised me with 4 tickets to the show for me and my friends. I remember watching Gwen Stefani rock out on stage in neon pants with suspenders and knowing, at that moment, that I wanted to be just like her. And that was before she became a rock superstar, solo artist, fashion designer and really awesome mom.
Now, 10 years later, I don’t have her voice, her talent, or her ability to wear crop tops (my abs are a little looser than Ms. Stefani’s….yes, even after her two children), but I am even more inspired by this Jack(ie) of all trades. And here are five reasons I salute Ms. Gwen Stefani: Read More »

Seeing as the Olympics are being held on my home soil, I should be paying closer attention. But last week I was distracted by my real love: Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week. Though I’m craving spring clothes more than anything else right now, NYFW kept me on the edge of my seat as I excitedly began planning next fall’s outfits.
As always, there were a lot of amazing collections during Fashion Week, but there were five designer gold medalists that really blew the rest away. Their designs were sexy, sleek and wearable…. and assuming I somehow make $1 million between now and September, I will be grabbing every last one of their pieces. Read More »

For us single girls, Valentine’s Day can seriously suck. Even if you love being single, all the PDA (puke), listening to what your coupled friend’s boyfriend did or (more likely) didn’t buy them, and the concerned phone call from your mom checking up on you, gets real old, real fast. And, for the love of god, if one more coupled friend tells me I’ll “find someone soon,” I’m going to scream.
But you can make Valentine’s Day better. Why should you miss out on the gift-giving and indulgence V-Day has to offer just because you’re single? Yes it might just be another day of the year, but it’s also the perfect excuse to buy you yourself a fabulous gift. Read More »

I rarely keep clothes I get for Christmas – there’s usually something just not quite right with them (read: they’re totally not me). However, this year, I was gifted this gorgeous BCBGeneration blouse (thanks, Mom & Dad!) that is absolute perfection. It’s slate grey, it fits perfectly, and it has ruffles (!!) which are oh-so-hot this season.
Ruffles are my latest obsession and they should be yours, too! They are not only a soft detail that instantly feminizes a piece, but they are also ultra forgiving when worn in the right place (there’s nothing like a tiered-ruffle top to camouflage your over-indulgence at the end of ’09). And they can be worn just about EVERYWHERE – on your tops, cardigans, dresses, and even bags and shoes! Meaning that there are many, many ways to incorporate ruffles into your everyday outfits.
And why wouldn’t you want to? Soft ruffled details add a romantic feel to the most basic of pieces, while the sculptural ruffles on skirts and dresses make a bold statement. As ruffles have been popular in seasons past, you probably have a few pieces you can bust out again this season. But with all that holiday money burning a hole in your pocket (not to mention the holiday sales that are still going on right now), how could you not afford to pick up a few new ruffles for your winter wardrobe? Just because summer is over, doesn’t mean you have to mourn. With the start of fall comes new opportunities – including new clothes (!!!). And what’s one piece you just gotta get this season? The skirt. It’s chic and fun and more versatile than a pair of jeans.
Yes, really!
Skirts can be worn dressed up or dressed down. You can wear them over bare legs to show off that tan, or layered over a fun pair of tights when the weather gets cool. You can rock them to class with a tank and flats, or pull ‘em up a little higher with a tucked in cami and some heels for a night on the town. There is so much fashion opportunity with a skirt, you’d be a fool not to get at least one. Or, you know, all sixteen of these. Read More »

One of the first CDs I ever remember buying was No Doubt’s Tragic Kingdom. I remember being mesmerized by the unique style of Gwen Stefani before I even had a sense of style. Almost instantly, I was crushing on Gwen.
Since Tragic Kingdom, my girl crush on Gwen has only grown. She’s rocked steady alongside No Doubt since 1986, despite her relationship with band mate Tony Kanal ending, proving that you can remain friends with your exes. No Doubt continued to pump out hits, until they hit a rough patch with their fourth album, Return of Saturn. Between this and recording Rock Steady, Gwen appeared on tracks for Moby and Eve – the beginning of her career separate from No Doubt.
With the help of band mate and former flame, Gwen decided to release a solo, dance record. The result was bananas (b-a-n-a-n-a-s) – Love. Angel. Music. Baby. was a hit, selling over 300,000 copies in it’s first week out. With the launch of her music career, came the arrival of Gwen’s Harajuku Girls. While their inability to talk in public is a little odd, these ladies are very talented dancers.
Gwen has won awards for both her work with No Doubt, and her solo career. She’s won three Grammys; two with No Doubt for Underneath it All and Hey Baby; one for her first collaboration with Eve – Let Me Blow Ya Mind. She’s also won numerous MTV Video Music Awards and Teen Choice Awards – proving this women has talent.
And not just with music.
Drawing from her unique style as inspiration, Gwen has produced two clothing lines. The first, L.A.M.B., is a high fashion line that can be seen on the runways during New York fashion week. Her lower-end line, Harajuku Lovers, is more casual, and often features cartoon pictures of Gwen and her Harajuku girls. I love them both almost as much as the woman herself. Hell, if I can’t actually be Gwen Stefani, at least I can dress like her.

[Most guys we know stay up late dreaming of the day they might end up in a giant orgy with beautiful women. We, however, lie awake at night dreaming of a closet full of beautiful clothes. To the left, a wall of shoes. To the right, shelf upon shelf of delicately handcrafted bags organized by color and size.
Sigh.
We all have our fantasies.
Since guys can turn to the interwebs to get their daily fantasy fix, we thought you should, too! So, we’re bringing you some fashion porn. The best of the best in all things fashionable. Sure, it may be out of your price range, but it’s a fantasy, so live it up in all its delicious glory.]
Sometimes it’s just too cold to go jacketless on a summer night – but that doesn’t mean you have to ruin your perfect summer outfit with a heavy coat, or warm sweater. While you could chance it, and pray you meet a hot (and chivalrous) man that will keep you warm on those chilly nights, sometimes a girl has to take care of herself.
Fortunately for you take-action girls, there are plenty of cute and cozy coverups that will complete and not clash with your ensemble. With so many sweaters and jackets, there is a perfect match (or several matches) for every outfit, regardless of your style or budget. So you don’t have to wait for Prince Charming (because he probably isn’t all that reliable) to keep you warm, because not only can you do it yourself, but you can also look fabulous in the process! This season it seems like anything goes for shoes. There’s a multitude of colors, styles, and, most importantly, details. But one thing is for sure: boring shoes are definitely out. This season’s shoes are often gorgeous, always interesting, and many are pieces of art that look almost too good (and painful) to put on your feet. There are some that are inexpensive (one pair is on sale for $4.99!!!) and others that we college gals will admire in the shop windows, praying the recession is over (and that we’re millionaires) by the time we get our diploma so we can “invest” in them.
