At some point in the last few months, I started to actively like Olivia Wilde. She’s refreshingly honest and doesn’t try to present herself as being absurdly free of flaws. She actually seems like someone I would meet in real life. Gorgeous and well put together, but has probably splashed her Starbucks latte on her shirt more than once and stumbles in her five inch heels like everyone else (or maybe I’m just projecting…). I still have no desire to see her play Justin Timberlake’s mother in a movie, but I will continue to appreciate her presence in Hollywood, especially if she continues popping up in adorable outfits everywhere.

Just because it’s November and getting cold doesn’t mean we have to get drab with our wardrobe choices. We can still embrace an uber feminine, vibrant aesthetic. This lace dress is sexy while still being conservative enough for day time. The red blazer adds a great pop of color, and an additional layer for warmth. You could definitely throw on some black tights if bare legs aren’t a viable option right now. Black peep toe stilettos are always glam and chic. I love that Olivia went with a bright blue clutch, as it’s a lot more visually interesting than a black one. This is a beautiful ensemble that would be perfect for any occasion you just want to embrace your uber girly side.

The more time I spend looking at this outfit, the less I like it.

And I love lace. And asymmetry.

It’s just… SJP could feasibly be my mother. I would not want my mother going out in something like this.

Don’t get me wrong, it’s a gorgeous dress. I love the lace, I love the white (who says you can’t wear white after Labour Day?!), I love how she has accessorized with a big floral piece (very Carrie), but I just don’t think it’s…well…appropriate. I think she’s showing a little bit too much skin and it just isn’t the right choice for her- even adding length to it would just make it look too bride-y.

I love the nude bag and pretty jewellery, but I don’t really understand why she chose green Manolo Blahnik shoes- I think nude or black would have been cuter. I do like her makeup, but again, I think the black eyeliner and heavy smokey eye it a little bit too much for her nowadays.

I’m not going to insist that SJP start wearing mom jeans and pant suits, but I’m just not mad on this one.

One of the hottest colors for 2011, whether it’s for fashion or home decor, is navy. With the popularity of nautical inspired pieces the last few seasons, there’s a good chance you already own something in this dark shade of blue. Navy can substitute for black as a neutral in many cases, making it a good addition if you’re trying to banish some of the black from your wardrobe. For example, if you’re tired of your usual little black dress routine, why not switch it up with a little navy dress?

Navy works well with all other textures and trends of the season. Navy lace? Check. Navy stripes? Check. Navy Sequins? Check. So when you’re hitting the mall looking to add new life to your wardrobe, try navy instead of black. You won’t be disappointed.

Dresses are usually the go-to item when getting ready for a night out on the town. And for good reason! Heck, you can even make a skirt and top LOOK like a dress, all while getting the versatility of picking the type of top you want. Want more coverage? Go for a crewneck long sleeve tee. Want to exercise your right to bare arms? Go for a tank. Really the possibilities are endless.

The leather skirt is super versatile and can be worn with a wide variety of items for many different occasions. Though this item may seem tricky to incorporate into your wardrobe, it’s a challenge everyone should take on. Especially because it’s possible to build outfits around a leather skirt with stuff you’ve already got lying around (because lord knows you haven’t had time to hang anything up since midterms started….). And since the leather skirt is so popular right now, everyone from uber expensive Michael Kors to budget friendly Forever 21 has a version to try.

So try it! And then try one of these looks:

For Somethin’ More Serious:

Leather Skirt, Blazer, T-shirt, Statement Necklace, Booties

This first look is perfect for a job interview, internship or other occasion that calls for professional dress (class presentation, anyone?). “How could a leather skirt ever look profesh?!” you ask. Easy! By pairing it with more subdued pieces.

Throw on one of the many basic tees you’ve got and dress it up with a statement necklace (or you could wear a shirt with an embellished neckline). Top on a boyfriend blazer with the sleeves rolled up and a pair of fabulous ankle booties (or your favorite pumps) for a look that is chic, trendy and totally professional. And if the weather is getting chilly, solid black tights will work perfectly with this look.

For Something More Fun:

Leather Skirt, Lace top, Tights, Heels.

For a night on the town, there is no pairing quite like leather and lace. Although, if you want to avoid looking overtly sexy, I’d go with a cami rather than a bandeau under that top. Just tuck it in to the skirt, add a statement shoe (anything from a pump to a flat will do) to finish off the look and you’re done. Seriously, it’s that easy.

For Everything Else:

Leather Skirt, Blouse, Trench, Handbag, Flats.

For another classic look, wear your leather skirt with your favorite button-up shirt – either patterned or solid will work – then toss on your fall trench. Add a pair of comfy, colorful flats for some contrast and your go-to handbag and you’re all set for wherever life takes you.

Outfit #1: Lace and Leather

If you’re brave enough to wear a leopard coat or shirt, hold back unless you’re willing to splurge on a piece that’s very well-made and well-designed – cheap leopard pieces usually look, well, cheap.

Every morning when I get off the subway to go to school, I have to walk right past Forever 21. And it’s torture.  School been in session for three weeks now, and there has been this super hot navy lace dress (I think it’s a dress, but you never know with that store…) every time I walk by.  Seeing as I don’t REALLY need another dress (remember how I bought 3 in the spring?) I’ve been trying really hard not to go in and buy it in all its gorgeous, lacy glory.  So far I’ve been successful, thanks to the fact that my classes start before the store opens (which might be the only redeeming thing about 9am class).

The good news for me and every other girl out there with a closet full of frocks: dresses aren’t the only way to incorporate lace this season. This dainty, feminine fabric is on everything right now (both in and out of the bedroom), even showing up in some new and unexpected ways.
