The LBD is essential to any wardrobe, even if fashion isn’t your favorite pastime. Slimming, chic and eternally in style — the little black dress is perfect for every body type. Wear a LBD to turn heads, to look chic or just polished in class. This must have can come cheap, in fact for under $30! Read More »

I am obsessed with little black dresses. Quite literally obsessed. So obsessed that whenever I am shopping for a fancy dress I have to avoid even trying on the black ones because I know I will buy them. They’re slimming, dressy and I already have all the accessories I need to style them. My closet is in desperate need of a bit of color… but we’ll deal with that another time.
I think RTR is perfect for my problem because I really (REALLY) can’t justify buying another black frock. But renting? That’s still fair game.
When searching for a lbd to feature this week, I wanted to find something a little different—not your standard tube dress or sequined one. I was hoping for a dress that mixed things up a bit. Read More »

The Little Black Dress: consider it your wardobe’s secret weapon. It can be styled hundreds of different ways and is therefore the perfect outfit for almost any occasion. Every woman should own at least one that she loves and she looks great in.
While it’s definitely a good idea to invest in a classic LBD you’ll wear for years, not everyone can afford to splurge on a designer dress while on a college-student’s budget. Luckily, there are lots of options out there for $20 or less (so you can start saving for that designer one now)! Read More »

If you’re like the majority of women, you’ve had it drilled into your head that the “little black dress” is the answer to all your wardrobe issues. It’s listed in every “must-have” wardrobe list because it “looks soooo great on everyone!” But experts now say that in actuality, only 1 in 5 women look good in black.
Cue my heart shattering.
According to some, black has the ability to “severely age” a woman’s face. It can “highlight dark lines under the chin, shadows around the eyes and wrinkles on the face.” Plus, wrinkles and other sunken areas can “appear darker and more pronounced.” (Someone should clue Kelly Cutrone in on this one…) This means the older you are, the more haggard black can make you look. And no matter how slimming that LBD is, it won’t matter when your face looks like this. Read More »

When we finally finish up finals and return home for the holidays, of course we must run to the mall and soak up the holiday cheer: hum along to the cheesy department store music, watch some kiddies take a picture with Santa and sip on a to-die-for Starbucks Peppermint Mocha (seriously if you haven’t tried it, go get one immediately). And then, after an hour of battling the crowds, we realize we can’t afford anything and walk back to our cars with nothing but a caffeine buzz and an empty red Starbucks cup.
And that, my friends, is when you should head to Target. Not only can you get a gift for everyone on your entire list there, but you can also pick up stuff for yourself without feeling guilty. Seriously, they’ve got a ton (and I mean a TON) of really great stuff under $20 lining those racks. I just want it all. And at these prices, I may just get it all. Read More »

I’ll be honest: I always thought Alloy was for the 12-17 age group, but then I started flipping through their merchandise and realized that they have a ton of cute stuff for us more sophisticated ladies. I mean, how could you not love this dress!?
Their regularly priced stuff is already reasonably priced, but they have a huge sale/clearance section that is even better. Another bonus: they have a wide range of sizes from petites up to plus-size so it’s a great option for you skinny minnies and us curvier gals. Here are a few of my favorite things (besides raindrops on roses and whiskers on kittens, of course)… Read More »

God, what did we ever do without the internet? Besides the amazingness that comes from sites like this, there’s online shopping. And it rules! You can get all your favorite things without leaving the house and online stores can charge less for all of it since they don’t have to spend all that extra money on actual storefronts. That means lots of fabulosity without spending lots of money.
And one of those great stores is a recent CollegeCandy find: Anique Michelle. It isn’t well known – yet – and might just be one of the best kept secrets of the world wide web. The selection is small, but everything Anique stocks is adorable and affordable. Nothing costs more than $60! I’m totally digging the accessories and can’t wait to spruce up a few of my outfits with some of these. Read More »

So it’s Friday night. You need to get ready and you spent far too long watching GLEE on your DVR and chatting with your roommate about the best mode of communicating with your crush tonight. Text? G-chat? BBM? You just don’t know! And now you have – uh – 20 minutes to get I-look-damn-good ready.
Enter from stage left, MAJOR problem: you are oh-so-sick of wearing a black dress with black tights and black shoes and a black bag. “Wouldn’t it be so nice if I had a style genie that could just pop in and show me ways to rock my plain black dress with, like, 3 different looks and 8 different trends for the season?” you think to yourself while sighing in front of your drab looking frock. Life is so hard sometimes.
Well call me a mind reader, call me a genie, call me amazing – I will answer to all. Because I have done just that for you (I know, I’m great).
From lace to leopard there are TONS of options to spruce up that ordinarily dark, boring ensemble of yours. Not to mention it’s a much better way than falling all over yourself while dancing on the tabletops to stick out a bit from the other 9,999 chicks dressed in solid black as well.
So here we go: One Dress, 3 looks, 8 different trends to rock with it. Read More »

[Every week our style guru takes a celebrity look and breaks it down for you, our poor college fashionista. What does that mean? It means that while the celebrities are spending $5,000 on an ensemble, you don’t have to. All you have to do is click on the goods and - boom - you can buy the entire ensemble. Yes, we know; there is a spot for her in heaven.]
As much as I love the elaborate looks of our Monday night addiction, Gossip Girl, there is something to be said about looks that are simple yet fabulous. Enter Blake Lively in real life. This outfit needs no accessories. It doesn’t need a flashy handbag or bright colored pumps. It is simple, flattering… and still sexy.
Simple outfits like Blake’s let the focal point of the outfit be YOU. So many times in Hollywood (and in our own lives) we see people acting as walking, moving hangers. But like our gal pal Blake, it is so much sexier when you wear the clothes and the clothes don’t wear you. With the season’s chain necklaces, gladiator sandals, bright colored rompers, braided headbands, and multicolor scarves it gets harder and harder to keep it classy and simple and not let the trends overpower you.
But Blake proves it’s possible…and totally chic.
So with that I bring you this week’s Celebrity Chic on the Cheap: Blake Makes Basic Look Goooood. Read More »
