This season leather is back, and with that so is greaser-inspired fashion. From Johnny Depp in Cry Baby to Sandy post-make over in Grease (get it Olivia Newton John, get it), the renegade rebel-inspired look is in. For inspiration think the Teddy Boy movement from London, Greasers from The Outsiders, and even the Sharks from Westside Story.

The classic greaser look is comprised of Levi’s 501s, a slightly oversized leather jacket, and Harley Davidson-inspired biker boots. But nowadays this look has been reinvented time and time again. This 50s-inpsired look includes a fusion of structure and slouch, chains, bulk, and general badass.

Look #1: The Jacket

As plaid never really goes out of style, it’s one of those things that everyone (and their purse-sized dog) has in their closet. If you haven’t jumped onto the plaid bandwagon, or only have your school skirt in your closet,  it’s easy to find plaid on the cheap. As everyone owns plaid, if you’re sick of your current pieces, try swapping with a same-size friend.

As much as I love plaid, there are some challenges with it. First, there’s Catholic school girl stereotype. Second, the farm girl image. And third, the punk-rock princess with safety pins in her skirt. If you play carefully with plaid then it’s pretty easy to avoid these not-so nice plaid stereotypes.

If you don’t want to look like an extra from Hit Me Baby One More Time, avoid knee socks, mary jane shoes and a tied-up shirt with a plaid skirt. To steer clear of a cowgirl get-up, stay away from wearing both jeans and cowboy boots with your plaid. And unless you’re channeling your favorite punk rocker you might want to avoid the ripped mesh shirts. Just some suggestions.

For those looking to keep their plaid looking fresh, here are two suggestions on how to rock plaid on a budget.

The Plaid Shirt: 

For early fall, I love me a plaid shirt with denim shorts. I like the shirt tucked into the belted short, for some preppy flare. A simple flat with bow embellishment and a beaded bracelet in a complimentary color finish off the outfit. When it starts to get a little colder you could add some tights under your shorts, and add the jacket from the outfit below. Transition pieces are the greatest.

The Plaid Summer Dress:

I love toughing up a simple, summer dress. While for the final days of summer you can enjoy wearing your plaid dress with sandals, it’s another piece that’s easy to transition. A faux-leather jacket and 3-finger ring are a nice contrast against the girly dress. This is a beautiful blue scarf that would contrast nicely with the pink, but also look good against the black jacket. A pair of trusty Toms finish off the outfit.

Halle Berry is a critically acclaimed, history-making, Academy Award winning actress. A former Bond Girl. A mother. And, obviously, a regulation hottie. She made super-short hair desirable. One of my absolute favorite things about fall, besides the pumpkin spice lattes and the boys in scarves, is the plethora of (faux) leather. The boots. The skirts. The bags. And of course, the jackets. What I love about this particular jacket are the ruffles, which add a glorious burst of femininity. Though this is one of the pricier items I’ve posted in this column, it is a total investment piece. Leather jackets (and ruffles) will never fall out of favor. Ever.

Halle decided to pair her leather jacket with a delicate lace top, which is one of this season’s trends. Lace and leather, when they’re both neutral colored and not too revealing, can easily be sultry and appropriate for daytime. Jeans dress this everything down, while the strappy platforms are simple but still very stylish. The oversized hobo bag adds another casual touch, and the pearl and chain necklace is perfect because it encapsulates the girly-yet-edgy motif of the outfit. Halle Berry’s style is proof that sexy is timeless…now if only I could steal her ability to constantly bag sexy model-actors as easily as I can steal her style…

Leather is one of the biggest fabrics for fall 2010.  It is also one of the easiest to embrace because EVERYTHING can be made in leather: bags, shoes, leggings, shorts, jackets, skirts…the list goes on.  And I love it all. Leather is sexy. It’s edgy. And it makes everything look cool.

Leather items are almost magical in their ability to transform an outfit. Just add one leather piece and you’ve got an entirely new look. Pair your favorite floral dress with a structured leather belt or a moto-jacket and you’ve got a totally different style. Or add some edgy, buckled boots to a pair of skinny jeans and your favorite camisol from last season and – bam! – your look in updated. (That being said, make sure not to go overboard; you want to look edgy, not like a member of Hell’s Angels.)

Even those opposed to wearing leather (or meat dresses….) can get in on the trend, as many designers and chains are offering up a variety of faux (and fabulous) leather pieces. One mom approved must-have for both fall and college is a chic fall jacket.

The perfect fall jacket is neutral, goes with all your favorite clothes and fits just right.  Not to mention, it “keeps you warm on those walks to class. You don’t want to catch a cold!” (Thanks, ma.)

This year there are lots of options out there regardless of your style: denim, military, leather, oh my! With so much variety at so many price points, why choose a favorite?

A fall jacket will take you to the field to watch football, on a walk home from an evening class when the air starts to feel crisp, and even out at night.  Though if you’re going to a party, and don’t want to lose your coat, see if you can find a hot yet chivalrous boy to lend you his oversized jacket. If you’re wearing a feminine outfit underneath you’ll instantly achieve the “Cardellini effect” and have an excuse to find Mr. Hottie another day!

White jeans are everywhere these days: magazines, store windows, tampon commercials (I don’t care how maxi that maxi tampon is, I do not believe you will have my back – or my underwear in this case – in white pants!) And they’re cute. They are a great way to lighten up denim for the summer and look so great with so many things.

I’m especially a big fan of white pants with bright tops, printed tops and denim/chambray tops. I don’t care how much the Gap or famous stylists try to tell me that denim on denim (or a chambray shirt with  jeans) is back in style, I will NOT be rocking a Canadian tuxedo of any kind any time soon. [Note: CollegeCandy loves Canada. Please don't hate us.] But pair a cute denim button down or jacket with white jeans and you’ve got yourself a hot little number. Holleration!

Here are three examples of crisp white denim for summer. And with Memorial Day/Summer BBQs/excessive day drinking around the corner, you can start rocking these ASAP. As in now. As in get yourself a pair and rock them.

White Shorts
Paired with this cute crop top and white sandals this outfit screams “I like pina coladas and getting caught in the rain.” Or “I like to spend my days on the beach with a boom box.” Pair with white shades OR go for the lavender, which adds a fun ’80s twist paired with the coral top. Oh, and if crop tops don’t really do it for you (like they do for Brody Jenner), just throw on a basic white tank underneath to get the same look without showing off your belly button.

White Boot Cut Jeans
The boot cut jeans are the most flattering white denim style for most figures. The key to wearing white denim is to remember two things:

1. Wear nude underwear/thong.
2. When in doubt go a size up.

White denim is not nearly as forgiving as your favorite pairs of super dark skinnies, so a little looser is okay. In fact, it’s appreciated by your fellow citizens. The boot cut is great paired with a wedge and, in this case, a bright tank (tucked in) with a super cute, loose denim bomber jacket (worn open or closed- the choice is yours!).

White Skinny Jeans
The white skinny is paired best with a more flowy top. Go for a long tunic if you wish and add a belt or something that draws your eye up. I love the brightness of the plaid and the femininity of the ruffle in this shirt! Pair with patent heals for night or black leather sandals for the day. And if it gets cool, a leather jacket paired with white jeans is, well, amazeballs. (I know $75 is pricey for a jacket, but as far as leather jackets go, this is still a pretty great steal, not to mention something you can wear all year long!)

Who or what inspires your style? Many of us use celebrities (like Sofia Coppola) or TV characters (like Clarissa Explains It All) as style inspiration, even though, most of the time, they are being dressed from head to toe by the best stylists. Which we don’t have. And sometimes it’s damn near impossible to work their Hollywood looks into our not-so-Hollywood lives. I’ve made it my mission to tap into the mind of a fashion stylist and show you how to take your style inspiration – whatever it may be – and make it more you!

Sometimes I will find myself enjoying things that clash in a good way.  Things like dipping tortilla chips in hummus, or writing an article about fashion inspiration while listening to the Red Wings hockey game in the background.  But if there’s one clash that I find myself diggin’ this week, it’s that between Willa Holland’s real-life style and her on-set style.

On Gossip Girl, Willa Holland played Agnes Andrews, a frenemie of Jenny Humphrey.  On the show, Willa’s character would prefer a more high-fashion, Upper East Side wardrobe. In the real world, though, Willa wouldn’t be caught dead wearing lace leggings, heels or high fashion dresses.

Willa Holland stays pretty under the radar and hasn’t been shown in celebrity Twitter fights of flashing her vajay while climbing out of a car.  To be honest, she hasn’t really even been involved with much to do with fashion, but still has the ability to inspire many people with her subtle, down-to-earth edge.

I think that’s pretty friggin’ cool if you ask me.  While many young celebrities of our generation send the message that what designers you wear dictate who you are, that ain’t Willa’s thing.  She’s got a more chill, alternative, “indie earth-child trying to find herself” approach to her style, which is painfully chic. The best part, her super cool (there’s no other way to describe them) outfits are all made up of things that I could probably find in my own closet, which means anyone can pull off her signature sorta-rocker style.

And here’s one way to do it:

Boots, Jacket, Necklace, Shorts, Shirt, Sunglasses

The key to Willa’s style to to mix basics with some harder elements. In this case, it’s some cut-offs and a flowy tank with a fitted leather jacket and some toughened up ankle boots. The result is feminine without being too girly, and edgy without being too intimidating. When you pair it all with the chill wayfarer sunglasses and feather necklace, you’ll have a complete look that is at once fashion forward and totally laid back.

Which is yet another clashing idea that I’m totally into, and which everyone who sees you in this outfit will be into, too.

We all have that friend who can wear the same dress over and over and over again, but each time it somehow looks new. Or different. Or cooler. “I wish I could do that,” you think as you stare at your dress and think that by wearing different shoes you will somehow achieve a whole new look.

FAIL FAIL FAIL, my friends.

Fact is, in order to make a dress look new and different you must change all components surrounding it. If you wore tights and heels last time, wear leggings and flats this time around. If you rocked red lipstick before, do a smokey eye and a muted lip. Add accessories, switch out the belt that came with it for a new chunky detailed belt, throw on a blazer…

Think about that piece in your wardrobe like your favorite fro yo place with an add-your-own-toppings bar: Oreo makes everything better the options are endless!

I know it can be a bit overwhelming (lord knows you can’t pile everything on top of a cotton tee like I pile on every. single. topping at Yogurtland), so let me help. As an example I took one simple gray conservative-ish looking dress and broke it down into 3 totally different, totally awesome Budget Stylista ensembles.

Look #1: Rocker Chic
Throw some lace, patterned or colored tights into the mix with a leather jacket. Add some rocker chain earrings and a pair of sky high platform pumps and this dress just laughed in the face of Hilary Clinton’s conservative pantsuits.

Look #2: Casual With a Twist
Take that gray dress and work it for daytime with a pair of leggings and some adorable flat booties. Add a little touch of sparkle with a fun headband and make it more Fall-appropriate with a cozy scarf. If you wanna add more layers, slip on a long cardigan and you’ll be comfy and put-together.

Look #3: Day or Night Glam
I love the option of this over the knee boot because you can rock it high or fold it down! Hide the tie that comes with the dress under this sequined belt (or put the belt on over the sweater in place of the cardigan tie), throw on black opaque tights and the beret and you are good to go! You can wear this for day (especially those days when your hair is dirty but you don’t want anyone to know) or trade the cardigan for a vodka soda and hit the town at night.
