Even though Olivia Palermo hasn’t graced our TV screens in a while, the paparazzi is still following her around. I don’t know why, but she’s stylish and I covet many of her ensembles, so I’m cool. She’s like the American Kate Middleton, but way more visually interesting (and personally I think she has better hair).

Sweaters have a tendency to be kind of blobby and unflattering, so I really love this colorblocked one because it breaks it up and gives the illusion of structure. Combined with some leather leggings, this becomes a cozy but still fiesty ensemble. Burgundy booties are an unexpected color choice, but it’s neutral enough to work. The fur vest is a little over the top, but that’s exactly why I love it. It should be noted, though, that the ensemble would look equally as great with a trench or peacoat. A simple black tote is a perfect accessory, or a blue or white one would be fabulous too (basically any color that complements the sweater). This is a delightful day time look that is fun and functional.

Looking back at childhood photos can be a pretty painful experience. While we’d like to blame our parents for dressing us like idiots, the truth is we used to beg them to buy us the most heinous apparel. In retrospect, our multicolored braces weren’t cool, leggings didn’t fit our bodies as good back then as they do now, and our pink fuzzy pigtail holders didn’t make us look like Baby Spice, they made us look like baby prostitutes. But thanks to Angelica for teaching us that the right tantrum can get our parents to buy us anything, we were able to spend an entire decade as a walking fashion mistake. We’re going to recap our favorite fashion faux pas of the nineties.

I am not a leisure-wear person. I only wear hoodies out in public when running errands or when I’m at the curling rink. (Yes, I go to the curling rink. Let’s get over it.) I do dress for comfort when I’m at home, but people rarely see me like this. Want proof? A couple of weeks ago a friend came to my building to grab something and her boyfriend told me he had never seen me dressed casually before (I was wearing a hoodie and jeans).

After receiving my UNCL hoodie, though, this might change.

I am in love with this sweatshirt. Like, I-wanna-find-a-reason-to-wear-it-every-day kind of love. It’s a good fit, not too baggy and not too big, but long enough that it covers my bum (meaning I can get away with wearing leggings underneath it!). And it’s soft. So soft. But it’s also super cute. Unlike most dormwear that has massive school logos all over the front (what do you think I am, a walking billboard?!), the small U embroidered on the left side makes this hoodie totally inoffensive. It is the perfect balance of cute and casual and that’s the kind of lounge-wear I can support….and buy 12 of. Just be aware: the hoodie runs slightly small, so if I’ve sold you on it, I’d go a size up (I’m usually a small, but the medium fits perfectly).

Honestly, everyone should own one of these hoodies. And I’m not just saying that cuz I got mine for free. In fact, I want to buy another one so I don’t have to throw this one in the wash every 3 days.If there’s anything I hate more sloppy dormwear, it’s doing laundry.

After alternating between actively hating and actively ignoring Kim Kardashian’s status as a celebrity for years, I recently decided to let it go and just embrace it. Though I find her by far the least interesting of the adult Kardashian sisters, I can’t help but be in awe by how she stole Paris’s hustle, perfected it, and progressively gets more relevant as time goes on.

How is that possible?

I could probably wrack my brain and crank out a seriously amazing sociology paper on the phenomenon of Kim Kardashian and how she parlayed having a big butt and a sex tape into a legitimate, relatively long-lasting career (if this isn’t a sign of success, I don’t know what is), but I’d much rather talk about her banging sense of style. Kim is all about trendy pieces that accentuate her killer body. It seems like a solid 99 percent of her wardrobe is black, so her aesthetic always looks sleek and sophisticated. Recently, she hit the red carpet in an ensemble that I immediately fell head over heels for, and I hope you will too!

I am absolutely in love with blazers with structured shoulders. They are so bold and add a ton of ‘tude to any outfit. Kim pairs her with gray and black tanks, adding laidback elements to the outfit. To ramp up the sexiness, she goes for a pair of leather leggings, and I totally live for my (p)leather leggings. You can wear them as pants (if you absolutely insist), or under skirts and dresses to automatically add edginess to any outfit. I really think every girl should own a pair… or four.

Then, instead of going for the obvious choice of black pumps, Kim went for camel colored pumps. Camel is a great neutral alternative. It doesn’t clash with anything, but since it’s not a common selection, it really adds a bit of unexpectedness to any outfit. To top it off, Kim chose adorable accessories. Her silver headband is absolutely adorable, and with a messy-chic updo like hers, almost looks like a tiara. Hello, totes adorbs and festive.

This outfit is so simple, but also incredibly stylish, flattering, flirty, and fun. I guess it’s always a good idea to take style cues from a woman who spends her entire life in front of a camera.

One of the biggest fashion trends for the 2010-2011 fall/winter season is velvet.  The ultra-soft fabric looks and feels luxurious, so it’s great for holiday parties.  It’s also warm, making it perfect for cold weather.

Just because velvet seems luxe doesn’t mean it has to be pricey, however.  For under $20, you can add any one of these great velvet pieces to your wardrobe this holiday season!

We’re well into another new school year and to honor that, we at CollegeCandy are bringing back the fan-favorite series, “We’ve All Been There.”  (We tried to get another national holiday/long weekend for you guys but it’s way harder than we thought so this will have to do.) Every week, Lauren – University of Michigan will comment on the common experiences all college women share – like procrastinating or using the not-so-private bathrooms. Read, relate, cringe and enjoy.

It might be your roommate’s birthday, or your birthday, or just another Saturday night on campus. Either way, you are currently standing in front of your over-stuffed closet in a towel with wet hair dripping down your back. You’ve got your pre-party mix blasting from your laptop as you scan your closet for something to wear.

To the left is a pile of jeans. 13 pairs of jeans to be exact. Dark wash, light wash, skinnies, trousers, wide leg, bootcut. To the right hangs your shirts: long sleeve, short sleeve, camis, halters, all in every shade of the rainbow.

You put on some underwear and your sexy black going-out bra, pull out a pair of jeans and squeeze/lunge your booty into them. “No late night pizza,” you think to yourself as you suck in your belly to button them.

You pull a low-cut black shirt from the closet and put it on. You check yourself in the mirror. No good.

You grab a different shirt. Nope.

You pull a blue cami off the hanger and put it on. The bra doesn’t work with it, so you slip out of the cami, swap on a strapless bra and put it back on.  Now the jeans don’t work, so you kick them off and grab a lighter pair from the stack.

Blah. You hate the outfit. Maybe a dress will work.

You grab your new green dress from the closet and slip it on. You can see your underwear lines so you take them off and grab a thong. You like your reflection in the mirror – your boobs look good, the dress hides your post-midterms poundage and the color makes you look less pasty.

Only – crap – you don’t have any weather appropriate shoes to wear. At least not a pair that won’t kill your feet in an hour.

You take the dress off and throw it on the floor. “Leggings will work,” you think to yourself. You pull on a pair of black leggings and realize they are the ones with the whole in the butt. You kick them off and grab another pair. You rifle through your drawers throwing shirts on the floor as you attempt to find something long enough to pair with the pants.

Finally, standing in your room in a bra and a pair of leggings with all of your clothes piled around you on the floor you declare, “I have nothing to wear!” You pout, you throw things and you tell your roommates you aren’t going anywhere.

They come to your room – facing the same dilemma in their own closets – and sift through the wreckage.  Eventually, they will grab a few of your things to pair with their own jeans. “OMG, that looks so hot! That didn’t look that good on me!” You scream.

They bring you down a few tops of their own and you try them on. “That looks so good on you!” they exclaim. And soon everyone is dressed and happy. And an hour late for whatever it was you were getting dressed for in the first place.

I love most things about fall – anything made with pumpkin, cozy sweaters and my TV shows starting back up – but the one thing I’ve never been a fan of is the dampness and rain that comes with all these wonderful things. At least until I invested in a pair of good quality rain boots. Now on those damp days my toes can stay warm and dry, even when I decide to go puddle-jumping (or am forced to when I try to cross a street and find myself ankle-deep in water).

If you have to walk any distance to school, you should own a pair of rain boots. Period. They are functional (keeping those tootsies dry), yes, but super fashionable as well. There are so many colors and styles out there and they’re just plain cute. And when the temperature starts to drop, many styles even offer fleece liners to keep your toes extra dry and toasty all through the winter, making them a very good investment piece!

For this week’s Shop Your Closet, I chose a pair of black boots that go with everything, but a lot of these looks could be adjusted for patterned or colored rain boots as well!

With a Skirt:

Boots, Skirt, Top, Socks, Necklace.

Yes, you can wear your rain boots with a skirt. In fact, swapping out your usual black knee-boots for a pair of rain boots makes for a completely new take on your wardrobe staples. I paired this super cute military-inspired skirt with knee socks that can peak out the top of your boots (so cute!), but you could just as easily wear tights instead. Add the denim shirt you bought in the spring, and a long necklace over top and you’re all set to go for a beautiful fall day.

With Jeans:

Boots, Jeans, Top, Jacket, Necklace.

Skinny jeans and rain boots make a perfect pair. No need to break into a sweat stuffing your straight leg style into the boot only to have them bunch up your leg for the rest of the day. These little guys slide right in. Add a pretty draped jersey tee (or any of your favorite tees) and a moto jacket for a casual daytime look. On a dry day your boots can easily be switched for a contrasting pair of flats, and when it gets cold you can layer on some tall, thick socks and an oversized sweater for an winter-appropriate version of this look.

With Leggings:

Boots, Leggings, Dress, Cardigan.

This look just screams fall fabulous. The boots, the leggings, the sweater dress, the layers! Sigh. It makes me want a hot cup of chai just looking at it. And it’s so comfy without looking sloppy! Add a scarf for a little extra color, or throw a belt on to cinch that waist up. Beautiful.

I know that off the bat leggings don’t sound like the sexiest garment in the world. You’ve seen all the girls on campus that wear them the wrong way with the too-short shirts, Uggs and panty lines galore.  There are other ways to wear leggings, ladies! Trust me, after the freshmen 15, even though your jeans may no longer fit (it’s not your fault all you can afford is ramen!) and you can’t afford new ones, leggings like these – when worn correctly – can be fabulously slimming.

The number one rule to wearing leggings is to always, always, always wear a top long enough to cover your bum! Leggings truly are not a substitute for pants. (Editor’s Note: Just ask my friend Erica who always screams “leggings aren’t pants” at girls who just don’t get it.) The material tends to thin out around the largest parts of you (read: your butt) and your underwear will not be safe!

The best thing about these leggings from VS is that they’re different. They’re not your momma’s leggings from the ’80s. They have a chic sheen that isn’t overdone and makes them a tad more dressy – perfect to pair with a hot going-out top and a pair of heels or tucked into my favorite wish list wedges from last week!

But the thing I love most about these liquid leggings is what they’re not: pleather. Although I love the look, I just don’t see how it’s feasible. Pleather leggings are too shiny for throwing on for class, and they’re too pleathery for anything else. Hello! Imagine trying to sit on a vinyl chair in a pair of those bad boys? And wouldn’t your thighs get stuck together?? These liquid leggings, however, achieve the hot idea behind the look without sticking you in a fake leather bind.

And yes – leggings are slimming. Fitted, black, luminescent in the best way, investing in a pair of leggings like these will follow you through the ups and downs in your waistline that college is famous for without showing the evidence in your calves. They’re also the best way to expand your summer wardrobe into the fall and winter. You can wear these under a dress or skirt and they instantly make a short hemline that your friend told you was too skanky instantly acceptable. And let’s face it, just because your jeans don’t fit, it’s still not acceptable to wear pajamas to class.
