Every time I see a photo of Olivia Palermo, I remember the days of turning to MTV at 10:00 on Mondays to eagerly soak up the dramz on The Hills, and then immediately going back to my computer the moment The City came on. I’d always have it on in the background and glance up to catch Whitney Port or Olivia making dramatic, over-the-top expressions at each other. And I think Olivia was supposed to be the villian? I never could give The City a real chance to win me over, but Olivia’s status as a socialite keeps her on red carpets all the time, and she has definitely won me over with her classic-yet-modern, dynamic style.

I used to be a vehement hater of all things orange, but it’s one of this season’s hottest colors, and I’m finally convinced that it does indeed have a place in fashion. An orange shift dress is a great because it is simple, but offers a lot of interesting options for accessorizing, whether you want to go minimal or dramatic. Olivia went for a balance, choosing a pink bag that complements the orange nicely. A set of gold bangles adds some understated glamour, and the leopard print heels add daring ferocity and adds some sexiness. This is an awesome aesthetic that can be tailored for day, night, formal, and casual occasions.

The key when shopping for animal prints with your Budget Stylista mindset is avoiding a cheap looking leopard print, which can be hard, lots of them exist. Sometimes it’s hard to determine what is chic and what is downright cheap (and tacky) looking. As a general rule of thumb, I tend to stray away from black and white leopard print (it just doesn’t look right to me) and smaller condensed animal spots.

Not sure about what to wear leopard print with? You don’t need to stick to a white or black base. Leopard print is the new neutral: It goes with nothing, yet everything all at the same time. In fact, I think this print is most fresh when paired with a bright color. Throw a leopard print top on with black jeans and a hot pink bag. Or tie a leopard print belt or scarf over a red dress. Pair the adorable leopard skirt below with a bright pair of blue pumps! Leopard should be fun and playful.

I LOVE the leopard print Keds with jean shorts and a vintage rocker T. The only rule is to stick to ONE animal printed item per ensemble. So don’t go mixing and matching these prints like it’s a denim on denim ensemble (which I don’t care how “in style” it is, I still think of it as what I wore in 5th grade/Canadian tuxedo).

It’s been awhile since Gwen Stefani reigned pop music (yet I know I’m not the only one who still gets “this shiz is bananas, b-a-n-a-n-a-s” stuck in her head), but she definitely hasn’t been slacking on being a fashion icon. Despite the fact that she has two kids, she never seems to leave the house looking anything less than perfectly coiffed and styled. Gwen’s look is so visually inspiring and fun, with tons of vibrant colors and ’80s-inspired festivity.

We’re getting deeper into the doldrums of winter, but our wardrobes definitely don’t need to be as dreary as the weather, right? Let’s all take a hint from Ms. Stefani and turn up the heat for the long, cold winter ahead.

Who doesn’t love a great cowl neck sweater? So dramatic, but so simple. Combined with this great contrasting pea coat, the top half of this outfit is so refined and conservative. Then, hello, leopard print! Animal print always makes a comeback in the winter, but instead of going for shoes/tops/scarves, try these amazing skinnies. They’re eye-catching, spunky, and totally awesome. Paired with neutral colors on top, they’re toned down enough to wear to class without looking like you tripped and fell out of a terrible music video from 1983.

Finishing off the look is a pair of badass knee-high black boots and a black crossbody purse that don’t compete with the crazy print of the jeans. This look is the perfect mix of feminine, quirky, and risk-taking, just like Gwen Stefani.

Animal prints have been hot for the last few seasons, but leopard prints are especially huge this season.  However, this trend can be tricky to pull off–too much and you’ll just end up looking trashy. Or like Snooki. Or worse, Angelina.

The important thing to remember about rocking the leopard print trend is that less is more.  Wear just one piece at a time, and you’ll look classy and trendy.  If you’re still unsure about wearing animal prints, a great way to start is with accessories.  They’re a great way to introduce yourself to the trend by working it in a subtle way.

Here are some great leopard accessories to get you started–and they’re all less than $20!

These flats are not only adorable, but versatile, too!  Wear them in the daytime to spice up your usual skinny-jeans-and-cardigan combination, or at night with a solid colored dress and some black tights.

Patterned nail wraps are a huge celebrity trend, but getting them done in a salon can cost upwards of $40-50!  But you can get the trend for a lot cheaper ($10.95) by doing your own leopard mani at home with these fierce nail wraps. Hotness.

A scarf is essential for the cooler months, so why don’t you switch out your old boring black fleece one for this leopard one instead?  You’ll instantly look more fashionable, and at only $5, how could you pass it up?

I know this time of year isn’t the usual time people think about buying sunglasses, but it’s important to protect your peepers year-round. (And, no joke, when the cold wind is blowing, sunglasses really do help keep your face warm!)  I’m obsessed with these ones–retro cat-eye shape, leopard print, and only $5.80?  I imagine this is what love feels like.

The latest trends for fall 2010 range from ’50s chic to elegant velvet, but perhaps the hottest trends are all about the balance between sweet and sassy: mixing ladylike lace with tough leather, infusing infantry inspiration, and daring to wear bold animal print. Here’s how you can wear these three toughened-up-good-girl trends without breaking the bank:

Outfit #1: Lace and Leather

Lace is big for fall, and when paired with leather (or faux leather, for the budget or eco-conscious), the ladylike classic makes a big statement.

Above, lace helps tone down leather’s severity, which makes for a hot evening ensemble that doesn’t scream “Jersey Shore extra.” Tuck this loose-fitting sheer top into the faux leather mini, wear a basic cami or bandeau underneath, and add neutral accessories for a sexy yet sweet look.

Many girls are scared of leopard print — if that’s you, fear not! When worn the right way, leopard will add sizzle to your outfit, without making you look tacky or cheap.

The key to pulling off leopard on a budget is keeping the dose of animal print small. A leopard print clutch, pair of shoes, or scarf will incorporate a bit of the jungle into your closet, without giving off a tasteless vibe. If you’re brave enough to wear a leopard coat or shirt, hold back unless you’re willing to splurge on a piece that’s very well-made and well-designed – cheap leopard pieces usually look, well, cheap.

Animal print is one of the hardest prints to incorporate into your wardrobe. And it doesn’t matter which you choose: leopard print, zebra print, faux-fur (because, for the love of PETA, please go faux) or snakeskin. But, as with most things in life, the harder the challenge, the bigger the reward. And in the case of animal print, that reward is instant sex appeal.

This fall, take a walk on the wild-side and add a little jungle-fever to your outfits.  There are tons of accessories to choose from if you’re going for subtlety, or entire pieces if you’re looking to make a statement. Just remember to keep both fit and texture in mind when you’re shopping to ensure a look that is tres chic, not uber trashy.

Every year when I start school I get so excited to show off my summer wardrobe (that no one got to see for three months) for a few weeks. But then the leaves start to change, the Halloween stores pop up, and my cute summer clothes get banished to the back of my closet, where they sit taking up precious space for the rest of the year.

It’s a shame, really. I hate forking over cash for cute clothes that I only get to wear for maybe 4 months (and that’s only because of Global Warming….). Not anymore. I’ve started looking at my summer staples in a whole new way, coming up with fun new outfits that let me wear them long into the fall. And the results have been stellar! You want to give your summer goods a little more traction? Just add layers!

Outfit 1: With layers
For those that can still bare their legs for a few weeks, pair your shorts with layers on top for balance (and snuggly warmth). Any layers will do, but nothing says fall like a plaid boyfriend shirt with a cozy sweatshirt on top. Throw on a pair of flats (or some Toms!) and a long necklace for a little extra somethin’ somethin’. And if bare-your-legs weather has already passed you by, just add a pair of black tights and you’re good (and bundled) to go.

Outfit 2: With a Patterned Cardigan
If you need a day off from your favorite skinnies (those thighs have to breath, you know!), put a pair of opaque black tights on under your black shorts for a streamlined look that mimics pants.  Add a pair of black boots and your legs will look miles long.  On top, layer on a trendy piece, like a leopard cardigan, or any bright and funky cardigan you’ve got in that stack in your closet. Top it off with one bright or bold accessory (be it a bag or a stack of bangles) to finish off the perfectly fall look.

Outfit 3: With a Cocktail
Casual shorts gone dressy? Yup! It’s possible and it’s as easy as dressing up a pair of jeans. All you need is a little glitz (on top) and a whole lot of leg (accentuated by a great heel). You could really make any top work with a pair of shorts, but I highly recommend going for something a bit looser (as opposed to some sparkly cami) to balance things out. Let your jacket to double duty (fashion AND function) by opting for faux leather instead of that boxy North Face fleece you love so much. Then add a bright pair of shoes for a little contrast and a whole lotta fun and hit the dance floor. Hard.
