Well, I’m just gonna give it to you straight. Despite having some great music to jam out to, this past month was a rough one. Besides having to cut back on the excessively unhealthy and inappropriate lifestyle I’ve become so accustomed to leading in college—to face the inevitable reality of returning home for the holidays—my favorite site to download music was shut down. Pushing aside my own concerns and complaints for a second, though, I’m pleased to inform you it was not, however, a rough month for music in general.
Like I raved all about last time, phenomenal artists came out with albums last month. Kanye West’s album, My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, and Nicki Minaj’s, entitled Pink Friday, are really the two big ones to pay the most attention to and give a full listen as soon as soon as you get a chance. They’re both nearly flawless, in my opinion. If you happen to have some sort of inexplicable resentment or animosity towards either one or both of them, I’m sure you’ve found it nearly impossible, at this point, to avoid hearing them somewhere or another. Not only are some of the tracks from their new albums already topping the charts, but Nicki and ‘Ye are also being featured in nearly every other popular hip-hop song out there right now. They’re basically the unofficial king and queen of hip-hop these days. Thus, unavoidably, (and to my great satisfaction) they’re also all over this month’s playlist. Read More »

I spend a lot of time looking for new music. I’m one of those people that gets gratification in having music that no one else does. I don’t know why, and I know its stupid, but… it’s just the way I am. I take pride when my unknowns turn into knowns, and get agitated when the Grammy’s give someone a Best New Artist award on their fifth album.
But I waste a lot of time on music blogs, weeding through the one’s I find to be bullshit, and searching for the songs I like on Limewire, or I mean, iTunes. I tell myself I’ll just look around for a little bit, and before I know it, it’s 3 in the morning, and the good night of sleep I was looking forward to is almost over.
Someone has decided to make my life a little easier—and I think I’m kind of in love with him for it. Meet The Hype Machine, maybe one of the coolest music sites I have come across. The people at Hype go through the bajillion music blogs out there, and post all the most talked about tracks in one place.
It’s pages, and pages of new songs and artists, and I’m so excited about it I think my head may explode. I haven’t been this happy since Christian Bale took his clothes off in American Psycho. Read More »

So you fancy your downloaded music? Well, guess what, you pirating son of a bitch: the Man’s gonna getcha. Believe me; I know firsthand. One moment, I was floating through the web, using Kazaa and Limewire to download my favorite Ace of Base songs, then BOOM! I’m doin’ time. Well, not really, but you’ll see.
Let’s backtrack a bit. I had just persuaded my mother to bring my desktop to the fraternity house. Let the guiltless hiding-of-the-porn-in-a-separate-folder, illegal downloading free-for-all commence! An album here, a movie there, it was cooler than penguin shit. My roommate wanted in. “Do you mind if I download this new song I love?”“Sure,” I said confidently, feeling like Jesus Himself, feeding the masses with fish and bread, well, username and login, in this case.
Then all the brothers in my ‘fraternity’ file started sharing off the same machine. Before I knew it, the popped-collar posse and I had gathered more than 200,000 downloaded pieces of media.
One day, the phone rang. Read More »
