In Our Makeup Bag: Urban Decay Vegan Palette

Is it just me or is there another “revolutionary” new makeup product introduced every freaking day?! Just walking into Ulta or Sephora (or even Walgreens!) sends many chicas into fits of hysteria, reaching for the nearest brown bag to regulate their breathing. It’s all so overwhelming.

So how can you know which product – among the sea of thousands – is the best? Which does what you need it to do? Which ones are worth the extra money? Let me help. I don’t know every beauty product out there, but I’ve tested a lot of them and I’ll let you know which are worth the money and which are not.

What it is: Urban Decay Vegan Palette

Why this should be in your bag: Every girl needs a nice eyeshadow palette. They are totally foolproof, since the company itself picked out an array of complimentary shades for you. Whether you’re a shadow newbie, or simply trying to expand your horizons, a palette is a great place to start. It also comes complete with an eyeliner and mini shadow primer. Plus, they are ideal for travel! This palette has a magnetic closure, which ensures that it won’t open in your checked luggage. Also, if you’re an animal lover like me, you’ll really feel good about using totally vegan, cruelty-free products. Even the super cute packaging on this palette is vegan! Read More »

The Clothes Don’t Always Make the Man (Or the Woman). But Sometimes They Can Help

Confession time: I’m a shopaholic. Bags are my weakness. So are boots. I’m obsessed with dark washed jeans and oversize sunglasses and Rachel Bilson’s entire wardrobe.

Needless, to say I take the time to make outfits out of all of these clothes that I acquire. I read magazines and blogs and spend far too much time trying to find the perfect outfit for every occasion. So yes, I am a woman who often worries about her appearance, or at least the appearance of her clothes. And I’m not afraid to admit it, much to the disapproval of the likes of Sandra Bartky.

I first encountered this feminist writer in my Philosophy and Feminism class last semester, when reading her article, Foucault, Femininity, and the Modernization of Patriarchal Power. Bartky discusses the roles men and a male dominated society (i.e.: the patriarchal power), play in the way in which women portray themselves. Women, she claims, feel as though they are constantly being watched by a male power and as a result, we feel it necessary to take part in this “beautification process” society has thrust upon us.

The process of beautification, she claims, is insignificant. It is a practice women take part in only because they feel they have to. Women, Bartky claims, feel as though they must always look perfect, as though they must always strive for the ideal. They are never good enough, but always reaching, always working in an attempt to please that nonexistent gazer. From waxing our eyebrows to straightening our hair, its all for someone else. And by conceding, Bartky explains, the patriarchy remains in control. Men continue to have the power. Read More »

CC Beauty Live: Long Lasting Makeup

Many of you have asked me how to get your makeup to last all day. This has been one of my own questions for a long time, but with one product, I figured it out. I’ve talked to you all about primers, which help at lot. However, what really makes it stick is a setting powder.

I’ve tried products from Maybelline, Covergirl, Neutrogena…you name it. Nothing even comes close to matching up with Make Up For Ever’s HD High Definition Powder (Sephora, $30). Yes, $30 is pricey for some powder. But this isn’t just any powder. This literally keeps your makeup on ALL. DAY. LONG!

$30 is nothing for what this little lady can do.

In Our Makeup Bag: Sigma Complete Brush Kit

What it is: Sigma Complete Brush Kit

Why this should be in your bag: Makeup brushes are essential for any girl who wears eyeshadow, blush, bronzer, etc (read: EVERYONE). Like most, I started out with cheap brushes from the local drugstore, but quickly realized that if I’m buying quality makeup, I should also be investing in quality brushes. A brush of exceptional quality will have soft bristles, little fall-out and pick up lots of product. It’s amazing how much of a difference a brush makes in your application. Good brushes will allow you to look polished and your best, blending when they should and depositing just the right amount of color! However, I have a pretty hard time parting with 50 of my hard earned dollars for one measly MAC brush. I’ve been searching for an affordable alternative to MAC (and other luxury brands) and I think Sigma might fit that bill! Read More »

What it is: Tarte Park Ave Princess Matte Waterproof Bronzer

Why this should be in your bag: Like I’ve said before, bronzer is a total pale-face lifesaver. A swipe of bronzer can literally make you go from dull to glowing. I myself use bronzer in my makeup routine every day of the year and enjoy testing out different formulas. Tarte (along with a few others) have developed waterproof bronzers, designed for use on the beach and at the pool, but also for those humid summer days. I’ve definitely experienced makeup meltdown, despite the use of heavy-duty primer, so I would find a waterproof bronzer insanely useful. Read More »

(Disclaimer: This product was provided to me for review purposes)

What it is: NYX Rouge Cream Blush in Glow & Rose Petal

Why this should be in your bag: Since my eyes have been opened to the wonders of a great blusher, I’ve become something of a hoarder. I’ve got blushes in every shade, for every occasion. Coral, pink, red, tan – you name it, I’ve got it. I find blush really finishes off your look and can make you look so alive and fresh! If subtly done, you have a great, natural flush to your face and no one will even be able to tell it’s from a product. Cream blushes are best for this natural glow, as they blend seamlessly into your skin and just brighten up your cheeks instead of caking on powder. The dewy finish they leave seems real, and I think this is key in pulling off that “Oh I just woke up and left the house”look. NYX Rouge Cream Blushes deliver everything I’m looking for in a cream blush: pigmentation, creamy texture and variety. Read More »

Web Spy: Beauty Story

[There are over 100 million sites on the Internet. 100 million! You might think you know about all the important ones (CollegeCandy, Gmail, Google, TFLN…), but there are thousands of other sweet sites out there (like Dear Blank, Please Blank; Specials Agent; and Shop It To Me) and more showing up every day! We get it – it’s not easy or fun sifting through the crap and porn to find those gems, so we’re gonna bring the gems to you. Just sit back, kick up those feet and allow us to introduce you to the diamonds in the internet rough.]

Confession time!

I am completely obsessed with shopping for beauty products. Lipsticks and eyeshadows and mascaras (oh my!) are my guilty pleasures (OK, just some of my MANY guilty pleasures, right up there with brownie sundaes and True Blood).  I literally have entire shelves and drawers dedicated to my vast collection of body lotions, perfumes, hair products, and makeup, and I’m always buying more.  It’s sort of a problem, but at least most of what I buy isn’t too expensive or it’s from the drugstore, since I can’t really afford the fancy department store and designer brands.

Until I found out about Beauty Story, a site designed just for beauty-obsessed people like me. Beauty Story is a members-only sale site (similar to Gilt, HauteLook, RueLaLa, etc….) that’s dedicated entirely to the beauty industry.  It offers amazing discounts–up to 80% off!–on all things beauty-related, including skincare, makeup, and salon and spa services for its members.

I know – I can barely contain myself either. But it gets BETTER! Read More »
