One sorority at Columbia University decided to be proactive and take matters into their own hands with man-hunting. They gathered to hear speaker, Janis Spindel, author of 365 Proven Ways to Find Love in Less Than a Year give her advice on how to find the right guy. According to the Columbia Spectator, Spindel came to provide them with the secrets to finding handsome and successful men in New York-and, more importantly, how to marry them.

“As Spindel sat answering the sorority sisters’ questions, her rapt listeners sat on the floor, gripping note-cards with questions and copies of her book.”

Girls, girls, girls, why do people think that after college all of our opportunities to find a husband suddenly vanish? And why are we so worried about this now? Regardless of your feeling on that question, Spindel’s advice was somewhat interesting in terms of inter-racial/religious dating.

“Jewish men will date shiksas. They won’t marry them. You don’t want to set yourself up for something you’re not going to finish.” And on dating a different race…”You’re in New York. Find someone from your own tribe.”

Hm, speaking as a “shiksa” (gentile, or non-jewish woman) myself, who is dating a Jewish boy, I take that statement to heart. What’s more, this is 2007 and referring to races of people as ‘tribes’ seems a bit old-fashioned and inappropriate to me. Maybe the intent female listeners over at Columbia should focus less on husband-catching while in college and more on having fun and forming strong friendships. Because as a second semester senior, I know the time goes too fast and the last thing you want to do is regret fretting over boys or finding a husband, and in turn, miss out on enjoying every single part of college.
