The most extravagant I’ll go with my nails is alternating polish colors on each finger or painting a coat of glitter over my plain polish. I know, that’s so boring. If only I could be like women in Texas who created a brand new nail trend. A nail salon started putting snakeskin on nails! Not just a snakeskin pattern or airbrushing, ACTUAL SNAKESKIN!
I think we are going a little too far here. I’ve spent hours looking at cool manicures on Pinterest, and a lot of them make me think, “Why would someone do that to their nails?” I’ve seen newspaper nails, lace nails and weird 3-D looking nails, but those seem so tame compared to this freakish, snakeskin nail fetish.
The thought of me biting my nails when I’m nervous right before a class presentation and biting onto real snake body makes me want to vom. Or what about when I’m eating finger food? Will I get snakeskin in my sandwich? I wanted a BLT, not a BLSST. Read More »

There are very few girls out there who don’t like to feel pampered occasionally. Whether it’s getting highlights at a fancy salon or doing an at-home pedicure, we all deserve a chance to feel beautiful. What I’m unsure about is whether to choose the DIY route for my facial/hair treatment/manicure or leave it to the professionals.
Help, I’m torn!
Love it: It’s rainy days like today that all I want is a good DIY pedicure. Why would I venture out of the apartment into inclement weather just to pay someone $20 to paint my toes? I have all of the tools (nail polish, lotion, exfoliant and a nail file), so why not do it myself? Plus, while I’m at it, I could scour the Internet for some other great DIY treatments, like this brown sugar scrub to soothe my skin. Between my fridge and pantry, I probably have all of the necessary ingredients. Plus, with the money I save, I can buy a new pair of shoes! Read More »

Saving money is hard. You spend all your time pinching pennies and putting that money in the bank and the next thing you know you’re drunk at the bar and blowing your savings on a round of shots for everyone within a ten foot radius. Ok, maybe that’s just me, but you know what I mean. No matter how hard you try to save, there is always something to spend the money on: new clothes, a concert ticket, a hot new bag.
On one hand, you know you should hold back on all the spending because you should be saving. On the other hand, you are young, you are in school and you just want to enjoy yourself….with these on your feet.
The good news is, you can do both. Watching your budget is like watching your weight: if you deny yourself everything, eventually you are going to go crazy. For me it was a Burberry trench coat, two new pairs of jeans, and a large pizza with a side of garlic sticks (and Ranch dressing).
After denying myself any sort of shopping (or fattening treats) for months, I just couldn’t stop myself. The jacket was beautiful and the pizza was heavenly, but I definitely regretted both decisions later. Especially after receiving my bank statement in the mail. And trying to squeeze into those jeans. Me and manicures, we have a love / hate relationship.
In my mind, the French Manicure represents a woman who has it all together; she’s smart, has things organized in cute little boxes on her desk, doesn’t have clothes strewn around her room, owns outfits that match, and is successful enough to spend $10 a week on nail upkeep. Perfectly painted fingers are the hallmark of chic and classy.
So, why oh why am I hopeless when it comes to keeping them that way?
Not being able to preserve a French mani makes me feel like a loser. A childish idiot who can’t maintain even the simplest womanly fashion. How hard is it to keep one’s nails at a nicely filed length? How difficult is it to keep that pretty white line from chipping off?
If you’re me, very hard. Incredibly hard. Impossible. Read More »
