So if you’re like me, part of the fun of being a girl is getting all beautified and purtied up. I mean, beyond the fun that is playing with makeup, what’s the point of putting together a cute outfit if your skin looks dry, your hair looks flat and you smell like a thrift store?
Obviously, my all-time favorite one-stop-shop for all my beauty needs is Sephora. That place has it all… not to mention you can pop in there while you’re shopping and freshen up with their variety of samples. (Confession: sometimes I’ll make Sephora my last stop so I can use all their expensive makeup to get ready for the night!) The sad fact is, beauty products are muy expensive-o and can quickly add up.
Good thing Sephora has a nice stock of too-good-to-be-true goodies for under $20. Let the beautification begin! Read More »

(A girl and her boyfriend at a large restaurant table.)
Girl: He’s really wonderful. He doesn’t speak a lot of English, though. Right, honey? Not so much English?
Boyfriend: *shrug, smile of confusion*
(Sad girl, on the phone.)
Girl: I know. I should really stop dating boys when I realize they’re evil overlords.
(A bunch of people sitting around a campfire.)
Girl 1: Marshmallows are kinda gross, when you think about it.
Girl 2: I think it’s a good kind of gross. Like tiny, edible fat people. Read More »

So, apparently ‘fruit salad’ on the east coast is literally just a bunch of chopped up fresh fruit, cohabitating in one bowl, possible even in a watermelon carved into a bowl shape. Sounds good to me, I love fresh fruit. I just hate buying it because if I don’t eat it all, I hate the guilt that goes along with it (not to mention the smell of fruit that’s gone bad…).
So a slightly less-healthy version of the fruit salad follows, because a) its ingredients are all canned or pre-packaged (which means you do not have to rinse or chop a damn thing) and b) it’s not THAT bad for you, and is a great summery treat. And also, this is what I grew up with, and why I am always confused when fruit salad does not come with marshmallows…
So here goes:
1 small can mandarin orange slices, drained
1 small can of pineapple chunks, drained
1 can chunky fruit cocktail (I hate the word chunk too, please go with it), drained
1 small jar maraschino cherries, drained
1 cup sour cream (again, I use low fat/no fat but please go with your gut)
½ bag shredded coconut
¾ bag of mini-marshmallows Read More »

Days as a Freshman: 6
Current Mood: Confused
So, it’s almost been a week since I got here. A week and already it feels much longer. It must have something to do with living in the same place you to go to school at. You never leave anyone, so people and days just drift into each other to make this huge vague cloud of time.
Six days in, and its 50% great and 50% I want to turn around and go home. Part of that 50% of awesomeness is Sasha. The kid who sat next to me during orientation and who I’ve seen a few times since. He’s got a smile that makes me forget my name…and my ability to put words together to make a sentence.
I attempted to talk to him the first time at a bonfire that followed the ‘Welcome’ ceremony.
Standing with my roommates, shielding my face from smoke and wayward sticks piled high with marshmallows, I felt someone brush by me in an effort to get closer to the fire. Without looking I moved over, but stopped when I heard his voice.
“Hey. That speech took forever, huh?”
He was smiling at me again, a huge grin that took over his entire face. It was almost completely dark outside but I could still make out his smile. The first real friendly smile I had seen since coming to college. Read More »
