“I Thought You’d Never Ask” – Glee Teaches Us The Importance Of Listening

Look at Kurt! And Puck! And Mercedes!

It’s official:

Ryan Murphy is obsessed with bringing high profile guest stars onto his show.  And I can’t say I’m too happy about this as it cuts into Lea Michele’s (aka Rachel Barry) screen-time.  You see, I happen to love Rachel Barry a little more than her boyfriend Finn does and a little less than she loves herself.  And that’s a lot.

But I digress: this week’s superstar of the moment, none other than Gwenyth Palthrow, was so much more charming than I expected, not to mention a vehicle for an important life lesson.

The concept of listening to others was a big theme this week.  When an epidemic hits McKinley, (you have to love Glee for giving the common cold the same kind of treatment that most shows would give AIDS) two faculty members are forced to stay away from the school: Principal Figgins and Mr. Schuester.  Their shoes are filled by Sue Sylvester and newcomer Holly Holiday, respectively.  Sure it seems like the only thing these two women share is blonde hair – one is large and incomparably snarky, the other delicate and chipper – but they both succeed in their new positions, and for essentially the reason: both listen to the people over whom they reign, and do whatever they can to give them what they want.  Read More »

The Graduation Speech Mashup [VIDEO]

By now most of the college graduations have come and gone. You (former) seniors have already thrown out that overpriced, hot (as in temperature, not sexy factor) gown; hung that tassel from your rear view mirror; and opened all those necessary-but-totally-boring (luggage? WTF?) gifts. And you’ve probably forgotten the important lessons shared with you by your influential speaker. Or you were too blacked out to pay much attention to them in the first place.

Well, don’t worry, my friends-who-are-now-joining-me-in-the-real-world; the Internet has got you covered. Here, in only 4 minutes and from the comfort of your very own bed (which you are undoubtedly lying in, crying, surrounded by the crumbs/shrapnel of depressed eating), is a little mashup of this year’s best graduation speeches. Maybe they’ll motivate you or inspire you. Or maybe they’ll just give you four minutes free of tears, fears and anxiety. Either way, enjoy. And congratulations!

(And for all you undergrads who can still call college home, you can enjoy this too. Along with another few years of college. Lucky bastards.)

A very big thanks to the Huffington Post for this rad vid.

Cure That NYE Hangover With The 2009 Music Mashup

Right now you’re probably curled up in bed nursing a bottle of blue Powerade. We’re right there with you, sister. As much as we hoped that giant order of Pad Thai post-bar last night would prevent the worst hangover of 2010 (…yet), the garbage can next to the bed proves otherwise.

But, damn, what a night it was. Bottle of champagne in one hand, a cute guy’s hand in the other, we shook our groove thangs to 2009′s hits all night long. And we’ve got the blisters on our feet to prove it.

As we have officially said goodbye to another great year, it’s now time to give 2009 a formal “see ya never.” And there is no better way to do that than with a mashup of the biggest musical hits of the year. You may already be jamming out to our 2009 playlist, but this little ditty is all sorts of awesome.

And you know what they say: nothing cures a hangover like a mashup.
People do say that, right?
No? Well, grab a breakfast sandwich and watch this. It’s totally sweet.

The Weekly Ten: Mashup Mixtape

glee mashup

Normally for the Weekly 10, I find myself counting down things that piss me off. You know, like phrases that suck and uninspired Halloween costumes. So I’ve decided to give you a mix tape for putting up with me airing my grievances Letterman-style.

However, this mixtape is extra mixy. I present to you: my top ten favorite mashups. Wikipedia defines a mashup as, “a song or composition created by blending two or more songs, usually by overlaying the vocal track of one song seamlessly over the music track of another.”  Basically smushing two songs together to make an even cooler one.

Yeah, I was inspired by last week’s episode of Glee; how could you not be? That show is so. damn. good.

Let me know if I missed any other greatness. Read More »
