Every girl needs a good purse. Whether you’re going for groceries or running from class to class, they are simply essential for holding all your, uh, essentials. Each week, I’m going to show you a fashionable, yet functional purse for the college crowd and let you know why you absolutely need it! I apologize ahead of time to your bank account.

Matt & Nat is the brainchild of Inder Bedi, and it came about while he was completing his degree in Marketing at Concordia University (in Montreal – go Canada!). As part of a course, he was required to come up with a business plan, which of course was Matt and Nat. Because he practiced a vegetarian lifestyle, the line had to be vegan. He was so taken by the idea of a vegan handbag line, that he decided to give up Law School and turn his business plan into a legitimate career.

As the brand is vegan, all handbags are 100% free of leather and instead constructed from a faux-leather, often PVC. Now please don’t start imagining gross, dollar-store “pleather”; this material is gorgeous and unless you were a real leather expert, I don’t think you could tell the difference! The faux-suede linings of the purses are also made from recycled water bottles (on average 12 bottles for each lining) and labeled using cork, which is “one of the most environmentally friendly harvesting processes in the world.” Read More »

Leather is one of the biggest fabrics for fall 2010.  It is also one of the easiest to embrace because EVERYTHING can be made in leather: bags, shoes, leggings, shorts, jackets, skirts…the list goes on.  And I love it all. Leather is sexy. It’s edgy. And it makes everything look cool.

Leather items are almost magical in their ability to transform an outfit. Just add one leather piece and you’ve got an entirely new look. Pair your favorite floral dress with a structured leather belt or a moto-jacket and you’ve got a totally different style. Or add some edgy, buckled boots to a pair of skinny jeans and your favorite camisol from last season and – bam! – your look in updated. (That being said, make sure not to go overboard; you want to look edgy, not like a member of Hell’s Angels.)

Even those opposed to wearing leather (or meat dresses….) can get in on the trend, as many designers and chains are offering up a variety of faux (and fabulous) leather pieces. Most guys we know stay up late dreaming of the day they might end up in a giant orgy with beautiful women. We, however, lie awake at night dreaming of a closet full of beautiful clothes. To the left, a wall of shoes. To the right, shelf upon shelf of delicately handcrafted bags organized by color and size.

Sigh.

If we had to choose two things to take to a deserted island, it would be all of our shoes and all of our bags. That’s only two things, right? We know it’s ridiculous to love inanimate objects so much (especially inanimate objects whose sole purpose is to carry things), but we can’t help it if we’re addicted to bags. Even just looking at them. And how can you not love ‘em? There are so many different shapes, styles, details and sizes.  Whether you need a bag to prepare for the walk of shame,  a cute clutch for going out, or a bag for the beach, there’s something for everyone.
