Memorial Day weekend is here! School is out, barbecues are in and it’s that in-between week where you’re home from school and not on to your summer plans yet, be it trip or internship or job. So the perfect thing to do with mom this weekend (aside from eating hot dogs and slaw)?!

Sales are EVERYWHERE. Seriously, now is a great time to get everything from shoes to mattresses. Where do you start?! What should you stock up on?! So many choices and so little time to hit all the stores! Life is so hard! Wah.

From Nordstrom’s Half-yearly Sale (I enjoy this weekend more than my birthday weekend) to Gap, Macy’s and Old Navy, there are deals to be had, people. I am a long-time resident of Madison, Wisconsin. We’re surrounded by lakes, there are nice bike paths, and we have a bangin’ farmer’s market, but my very favorite thing about this place is Brat Fest.

For those you not familiar with brats (rhymes with knots) or bratwursts as they’re formally known, they are delicious sausages hailing from Germany that found their way over to the states and are now a staple on mid-western grills. You usually soak them in beer and onions before you cook them, then you can top them with assorted condiments and relishes. It’s essentially what a hot dog aspires to be.

Brat Fest is exactly what is sounds like: thousands of people converging on a park in the middle of the city to listen to local bands, sit in the sun and gorge themselves on these unique sausages. All the proceeds go to local charities, and boy do they rake it in. So a guy friend is hosting a barbecue this weekend on the terrace of his apartment building. In Manhattan. It’s not quite the same for me as a traditional backyard gathering, but these are the things we sacrifice to live in the city.

At least there will still be some classics in the way of burgers, hot dogs, and chicken. But the rule of being a dinner party or barbecue guest is you can’t show up empty handed. While ordinarily I prefer to contribute something of the beverage variety, or pre-washed-and-cut fruit from the nearest grocery store, I’ve decided it’s time to man up and cook something. I don’t want to be shown up by a bunch of boys, even though without question they can cook better than me.

Barbecue essentials that the boys will be providing consist of meat. I don’t cook meat, so I’m opting to make cole slaw.
