Celebrity Chic on the Cheap: Michelle Williams is Polka Dot Pretty

Michelle Williams has had a pretty great year. Between receiving oral from Ryan Gosling and being chosen to play Marilyn Monroe in a critically acclaimed, Oscar-nominated film, I’d say she’s probably one of the luckiest ladies in Hollywood. I’ve been a huge fan of hers since she was the tortured girl next door (not named Joey Potter) on Dawson’s Creek, and I love that she is getting so much recognition for her talent and beauty. Now Showing: Blue Valentine

[You may be wondering why, since I usually write about new releases, I have chosen to review Blue Valentine (which was released in late December most places) this week. Well, despite being out for a month, Blue Valentine remains a water cooler topic. The subject is no longer the MPAA’s original decision to give Blue Valentine an NC-17 rating (read my thoughts on that here), but instead it is Michelle Williams' nomination for Best Actress; more notably, it is her nomination compared to Ryan Gosling who did not receive a nomination for his performance. Aside from that, it is an Oscar-nominated film, which means that if you look hard enough, you can probably find a showing in your area.]

Blue Valentine is the story of a young couple in the process of falling into, and subsequently out of, love. The film masterfully goes back and forth between the two times, providing an amazing juxtaposition. Ryan Gosling and Michelle Williams play the couple and they deserve so much credit for their work in this film. Their performances make the audience see a transformation, while only truly acting infatuation and whatever the opposite of infatuation is.

When I was debating whether or not to see the film, specifically to see it alone, my friend told me I should and had an interesting comment. He said, “It’s the kind of movie that you don’t want to talk about after.” I was sold. And now I know exactly what he was talking about. The film is beautifully shot, wonderfully acted, and perfectly depressing. Read More »

2011 Golden Globes Fashion: The Good, The Bad and The WTF [GALLERY]

Can I get some Red Bull up in here? I’m majorly struggling right now. It’s like the crash that comes after eating a bag of Sour Patch Kids, only instead of sugar I was hopped up on sequins and cleavage and Brad Pitt’s sunglasses.

Yes, you know I’m talking about the glamour that was the Golden Globe’s Red Carpet.

Of course there are always lots of entertaining moments in the award show itself (Ricky Gervais was hosting, after all), but like most ladies with an eye for fashion, the true highlight of the show comes before it even starts. And last night’s show before the show did not disappoint. From the stunning shoes (I’m looking at your hidden feet, Olivia Wilde!) to the bright hues (word to your mother, Angelina) to the style doo doos (how else do you describe Christina Aguilera’s ‘fit?), the 2011 Golden Globes red carpet had me on the edge of my futon.

So after 3 hours of acceptance speeches during which I did some careful consideration (and drank a few glasses of Franzia), I bring you the best dressed, worst dressed, most WTF dressed and, just for fun, the sexiest men of the 2011 Golden Globes.

Enjoy. Read More »

Gossip Cheat Sheet: Everyone Is Having Babies!

Lately, it seems like celebrities are doing things in groups more than usual – one week it was engagements, the next week it was breaking up, and this week, it’s all about babies. Add in some relationship rumors and Britney making yet another comeback, and you’ve got a pretty good week for Hollywood.

A Snow Day Filled With Long Naps

1. Britney’s back, bitches! You didn’t expect her to be gone for long, did you? Britney released her amazing new single, ‘Hold It Against Me’ this week, and it immediately made it to the top of the iTunes charts AND broke radio records. It leaked on Monday afternoon, even though it was supposed to be released at midnight. I, for one, cannot wait for the music video. In more awesome Britney news, she’s rumored to be performing at the Grammys. Yet another reason to watch.

2. Kate Hudson and Owen Wilson are both having babies at the same time. With different people, obviously. Kate announced her unplanned pregnancy with her boyfriend, Matt Bellamy from Muse. I’m guessing this means no A-Rod reunion any time soon. Owen announced he was going to be a father on Monday, Jan. 11, with his girlfriend Jade Buell. Do I hear wedding bells in the future for either of them?

Our Golden Globe Predictions

It’s January, so you know what that means in Hollywood – it’s awards season! Kicking off the big ones is the Golden Globes, airing THIS Sunday, Jan. 16, and I for one cannot WAIT!

The Golden Globes merge television and movie awards and are sure to bring out some truly fabulous celebs. It’s (almost) goes without saying that this is the best awards show out there.  But we all know what’s most important (besides the fashion) and that’s not who’s presenting: it’s who will be taking home the awards. Which movie will be crowned Best Drama or Best Comedy? Which actress impressed everyone the most? Who will make the drunkest acceptance speech?

So, with no further ado, here are my predictions on who will most likely win and who SHOULD win the biggest categories of the night:

The ‘Blue Valentine’ Controversy

Note: As of Wednesday, December 8th, the MPAA overturned its decision, giving Blue Valentine an R rating. I think the subject is still an important one, because it originally DID give the film an NC-17 rating before realizing that it was wrong. Weinstein himself appeared at the hearing to state his beliefs.

Blue Valentine (in theaters December 31st) stars Ryan Gosling and Michelle Williams as a married couple with an imperfect relationship. You may not know that, but you probably know that the film has received an NC-17 rating from the Motion Picture Association of America (aka the MPAA) for a scene in which Gosling’s character performs oral sex on William’s character. If that is all you know about the film, I would highly recommend that you check out the trailer. This is a film that is getting a lot of Academy Award buzz, and yet this controversy may block it from reaching a large audience.

NC-17 is a bad rating for a film to have. Of course, at face value it means that only people seventeen and older can see the film in theaters. And yes, the rating itself may prevent a few wary people from seeing the film, but the problem goes beyond that. Many theaters have policies against showing NC-17 rated films, which makes it so much harder for these films to make money.

Harvey Weinstein, co-head of The Weinstein Company, which is the studio releasing Blue Valentine has been quoted saying that they will not be removing the scene from the film, but will be appealing the MPAA’s chosen rating. I loved his choice to compare the film to Piranha 3D, a much more over-the-top and raunchy film, which got an R rating without any problems.

The way that I see it, one force that may be at work here should really be looked into: sexism. Read More »

Gossip Cheat Sheet: Preggo Pink! Kanye’s Outrageous

I don’t know why I still act surprised when something crazy happens with celebrities.  It’s not really shocking anymore, but some things do give me a “if this shizz didn’t happen all the time, I might be surprised” kind of vibe.  This week Lindsay Lohan seems to be doing well in rehab, Kanye lost it once again, celebs are pregnant, and Taylor Swift is still with Jake Gyllenhaal (and still can’t sing).

Giant Slurpee

1. Kanye West lost it this week after an interview with Matt Lauer on The Today Show about his comments on George W. Bush.  Matt did a long interview with the former president, where he revealed that Kanye calling him a racist “was one of the most disgusting moments of [his] presidency.”  So when Matt talked to Kanye about the situation, he freaked out.  Then he took to his Twitter for a meltdown saying that Matt tried to force his answers (in all caps mind you) and many other outrageous tweets.  Someone needs to get Kanye a sedative.
