Are you guys excited to see The Vow? I’ve heard some of my friends say they’re hesitant because all “these type” of movies end the same way. Well here’s the gist with The Vow: A man and his wife get into a horrible car accident, she wakes up with amnesia and he has to make her fall in love with him again. Sounds like The Notebook, right? But it does have Rachel McAdams and Channing Tatum. That alone makes it worth a trip to the movies. And I hear the movie ends in a way that we wouldn’t quite expect. Since I haven’t seen it yet, I can only guess about how things turn out. Here are a few possible scenarios I’ve come up with.

1. The Bourne Vow. Rachel McAdams’ character doesn’t remember any of her past life, but she has badass fighting skills and multiple fake identities, a la The Bourne Identity. She sets off on an epic quest to take down the corrupt government agency that trained and then abandoned her. This leaves Channing Tatum confused but strangely aroused.

2. The Vow of Lies. Channing Tatum planned the car accident. He was cheating on Rachel McAdams with a younger woman, and they were planning on robbing a bank and running away together. He had to set up the car accident so she couldn’t turn him in. Think Law & Order on this one. McAdams miraculously regains her memory in the last five minutes of the movie and turns him in.

3. The Double Vow. Rachel McAdams has secretly been leading a double life. She actually has two families, complete with husbands, houses, kids, etc. In reality, she remembers everything, but she pretends to have amnesia to escape her messy situation. She runs away to the Caiman Islands. Eventually, Channing Tatum and the other husband figure everything out, but they don’t blame each other. Instead, they move in together and raise all the kids as one family.

4. The Star Vow. Rachel McAdams wakes up and thinks she is Ke$ha. Channing Tatum loves her so much that he sits patiently while she teases her hair, cakes on eyeliner, and buys huge amounts of glitter. She and her family go on tour. Her kids are a little embarrassed, but she builds up a fan base and becomes a millionaire. Happily ever after.

5. (500) Days of the Vow. Despite his best efforts – and his rock hard abs – Channing Tatum cannot make Rachel McAdams fall back in love with him. Eventually, they break up and Rachel starts dating someone else. But in the last five minutes of the movie, Channing meets a new girl and they live happily ever after. He and Rachel remains friends.

I’m a dancer, so you can bet that the second anyone starts to dance in a movie, I’m paying attention. Sometimes I go on YouTube binges where I spend hours and hours looking at dance videos. But I don’t just enjoy watching videos of professional dancers onstage – I love movie dance scenes, too. And believe it or not, great dancing pops up in unexpected places. Sure, Dirty Dancing and Center Stage have big group dances. But do you remember the dance scene in (500) Days of Summer? Check out these videos of some of the best movie dance moments.

I’m originally from Jackson Hole, WY – one of the coldest, snowiest places in the country. But even though blizzards there are as commonplace as rats in a subway station, I never had a single snow day growing up. Why, you ask? Because when it snows all the time, it’s nothing special, and school just goes on. But I always wanted a snow day so, so badly.

New Year’s Eve is seriously THE most overrated holiday of the year. Valentine’s Day is the day that all lazy boyfriends have to get up off their asses and remind their girlfriends why they should stick around, and Halloween is the night to dress up like someone else and make out with someone whose face you don’t ever really want to see. So why celebrate NYE?

People say it’s the end of a year and the beginning of another. Well thanks, Captain Obvious, excuse me while I go “celebrate” the end of one minute and the beginning of the next sixty seconds of my life! That justification only works in a game of Power Hour, and besides, we all know that NYE isn’t actually about a night at all; it’s about a ten-second countdown and how you think you’ll feel afterwards. And unless you hit the lottery when the clock strikes midnight, absolutely nothing will change in your life after you spend an entire night getting drunk and flirting with the person you’ll make out with later on. Take it from those who do it regularly: it’s fun, but it’s definitely not life-altering or magical like Harry and Sally portray it to be.

I think all our ideas about an ideal NYE are actually rooted from the media anyway. How many times have we watched Bridget Jones’ Diary and that NYE episode of The OC as a child and awaited the days when we could cover ourselves in too many sequins and kiss the loves of our life’s during the first few seconds of the New Year? How hard did we wish to be those people freezing their faces off in Times Square as they watched a giant light bulb drop a few feet – live- while we sat warm in our pajamas and saw the entire thing at a much closer view through our televisions?

Well, I’d say that true definition of NYE can also be found in the media too, like on MTV’s super exciting television special and in Garry Marshall’s latest box office name dropper: it’s completely overrated. Often it’s overhyped and a waste of money, and in a few years, you really won’t remember it anyway. “The One Night Anything Is Possible” is the most inappropriate tag line for that movie…have you ever tried to drive across town on NYE? It’s the everyday tasks that are actually IMpossible on the last day of the year!

Here’s the fact that everyone seems to forget once December 31st rolls around: it doesn’t matter how you start the year or end the year; these things have no reflection on the value of the year altogether. You know what went down during the other 364 days: all the amazing things that happened that didn’t involve wearing a exclamatory greeting on your headband or a bunch of numbers over your eyes. Times that didn’t involve counting down to anything because you were having the time of your life in the moment already. Drinks that were cheaper, weather that was warmer, and dresses that fit better than after a week of indulging in holiday meals prepared by the best chefs in the family. Seriously, who’s idea was that?!

So what’s the best way to not have an overrated NYE? Don’t take it so seriously. Realize that NYE doesn’t necessarily require overpriced cover charges, overpriced alcohol, overpriced outfits or overpriced hotel rooms. Hang out with people you actually stand rather than joining groups of acquaintances who can’t hold their liquor. And if you find yourself with no comment-worthy Facebook photos to upload afterwards, let it go, it’s not the end of the world. In fact, it’s only the beginning, right?

If you’re looking for a way to spend time with family members without actually interacting with them, do as you did on those dates back in high school: go to a movie. There are plenty of feel-good flicks conveniently released for the holiday season; bond with your little brother while watching The Adventures of Tintin or fill out an entire row in front of Matt Damon and ScarJo in We Bought A Zoo. Too many opinions? Tickets to the movie with too many plot lines, please — New Year’s Eve!

The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo: December 21st

It’s the highly anticipated movie based on the best-selling book, and even if you didn’t read it, it’s still a solid mystery/thriller film. Directed by David Fincher (Fight Club, The Social Network), starring Daniel Craig and introducing Rooney Mara, who just earned a Golden Globe nomination for this role.

The Flowers of War: December 21st (limited release)

Directed by Zhang Yomou (Hero, House of Flying Daggars), Christian Bale stars in China’s “non-foreign foreign film” about an American priest who helps save the lives of Chinese citizens during the Nanjing Massacre. And it better be good: The Flowers of War is the most expensive movie ever made in Chinese history.

In The Land Of Blood And Honey: December 23rd

Why the heck hasn’t Angelina Jolie come out with a third Tomb Raider movie yet? She’s been writing and directing (her directorial debut!) In The Land Of Blood And Honey, a romance between a Bosnian Muslim woman and a Serbian army officer during the Bosnian War. Croatian journalist James Braddock accused Jolie of stealing the plot from his book published in 2007, but she denies ever having seen the book. Ever. Even though the premises are incredibly similar.

Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close: December 25th

The film based on the best-seller by Johnathan Safran Foer stars Tom Hanks and Sandra Bullock. Warning: you will cry, since it’s about a boy who begins an amazing and unique search after his father dies in the 9/11 attacks, in the same way you were affected by the other movies that Stephen Daldry has directed (The Reader, The Hours, Billy Elliot).

The Iron Lady: December 30th

Meryl Streep has already collected nominations for her portrayal of Margaret Thatcher, the former Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. Judging from the trailer, it’s an ideal mixture between her roles and Julia Child in Julie & Julia and Miranda Priestly in The Devil Wears Prada, with just a hint of Donna’s self-doubt from Mamma Mia!.

Between Harry Potter, Bridesmaids,  and what will now be known as the Ryan Gosling 2011 Breakout Year Film Collection, this was a phenomenal year for the movies.  I laughed, I cried, and I regretted buying a $6 soda all at the movie theater this year. There aren’t many other places that can take you on such an emotional roller coaster  in just one year.  (But really, $6 for a small soda!?)

And now the year is over and it’s time for reflective blog posts and 9 billion lists summing up the year by cateogory (spoiler alert: CollegeCandy will be indulging in some of these end of year lists. Stay tuned!).

So let’s kick it off with the 26 Best Movies of 2011. How many have you seen?

Breaking Dawn came out on Thursday night and in it’s four-day span in the box office, it’s already earned $140 million. Now, I know Twilight is really awesome to Twilight fans, and I used to be one. But I simply can’t bear seeing Kristen Stewart be awkward anymore, and it still bums me out that Robert Pattinson has forgotten his Harry Potter roots. I’m not judging anyone for  seeing Breaking Dawn because I did it for all of the Harry Potter movies, and I’ve spent a lot of money on that franchise. I started to wonder what I could do with all of that cash if I hadn’t spent it on seeing Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 like six times. In 3D. With popcorn.
