Growing up in Los Angeles, I frequently heard mixed opinions about gay marriage. While LA is fairly liberal, I have, too many times, witnessed homophobic responses to two men holding hands on the street or out on a date. Truthfully, for a long time I tried to avoid having an opinion about gay marriage because I was always hearing mixed messages and both sides seemed convincing. “It goes against the bible. Your religion.” Or, “everyone has the right to marry the one they love.”  I struggled with my opinion for quite a while.

However, especially since going to college, I have been able to form my own opinion free from those around me. Out Magazine recently did an adorable photo shoot spread with Neil Patrick Harris and his “better half,” David Burtka. The article describes the men’s relationship in a way that only fortifies my belief that all people should be able to get married, regardless of sexual orientation. Part of this article is an argument against the belief that two gay men can’t have a family because they can’t reproduce. They are not any different than two parents of opposite sexes. This article also argues against the belief that gay marriage destroys the sanctity of marriage. To be honest, it seems to me that Neil Patrick Harris and David Burtka’s relationship may be more stable than most heterosexual relationships I see around me.

Yesterday, two years after Prop 8 – a proposition to ban gay marriage in California – was passed, Federal Judge Vaugh Walker released a 136-page document deeming the proposition unconstitutional. To say it was a big day for the gay and lesbian community in this country is an understatement. In fact, to say it was a big day for this very straight woman is an understatement, too.

Having been raised in a liberal household before attending an extremely liberal college, I literally cannot understand the idea of banning gay marriage. Say what you will about the whole “marriage is between a man and a woman” thing, making it illegal for a gay couple to get married is unfair, unjust and in opposition to the morals and ideals this country was built on.

America is (supposedly) a country that accepts all people, and that includes both straight and gay. We create laws to keep order and safety, but the law proposed by Prop 8 does neither. It is based on hatred, bigotry and ignorance. Will allowing gay couples to get married wreak havoc on our country? Are they more dangerous than straight couples? No and no.

Let’s be real: we have much larger issues to focus on in this country (um, the economy/the war/rebuilding New Orleans post Katrina…) than worrying about who is getting married. And it’s nice to see that someone with a voice has finally realized that too.

While we are still a ways away from having equal rights for the gay community, yesterday’s ruling gives me hope that one day – in my lifetime – we will live in a country that doesn’t ban gay couples from prom; doesn’t oppress millions of innocent people; gives everyone the right to love who they want to love, no questions asked; and has the (obviously fabulous) Neil Patrick Harris/David Burtka wedding televised.

I can’t wait for that day.

GQ magazine has unveiled its annual “Men of the Year” list. They have men in every category from Leader of the Year: Obama, to Badass of the Year: Clint Eastwood. While GQ did a comprehensive job of compiling the best men out there (who will all have starring roles in my sexy dreams tonight), it got me to thinking.

What about Best Gay Man of the Year?

It seems like every day I fall in love with yet another unattainable man. There are just so many of them out there showing off their goodness and reminding me that I can’t get a slice. But I love them anyway. So I decided to compile a wishlist of my favorite gays; the best of the best from all corners of the entertainment biz. And no that does not include Dwight from The Real Housewives of Atlanta. (Editor’s Note: Wait, he’s gay?!) That dude may look great in a pair of heels, but he’s got some real ‘tude that I don’t appreciate.

Intelligence:

Anderson Cooper is my personal hero.  An anchor on CNN, author and television personality, he is living my dream. He epitomizes journalism eye-candy and for that I admire him. Although he keeps his personal life private, his recent trip to India with his boyfriend Benjamin Maisani left women’s hearts shattered across America.

Fashion Design:

Just looking at Marc Jacobs makes me giggle. As far as fashion designers go, he definitely tops the charts of the cutest gay men in the industry. Honestly, who can pull off a Spongebob tattoo and the red M&M dude on the same arm? But all of his poor body art choices aside, I would die to sport his threads. That man knows how to create a show-stopping look and if there’s one thing I want (besides a chance to bring Marc back to our team) it’s one of his signature quilted bags.

Humor:

Neil Patrick Harris had me at “Hello, my name’s Doogie.” And he may be gay, but I still chuckle at his womanizing antics on How I Met Your Mother.  What’s not to love, really? He’s cute, he’s funny, he’s sexy, and maybe the only example of a child actor not gone horribly awry in their later life. He has been dating actor David Burtka since 2004 and admire them for being an openly gay couple in Hollywood.

Style:

If anyone is going to publicly humiliate me on television, throw out my entire wardrobe and mock me to my face, it better be Clinton Kelly.  A fashion consultant known for his role on What Not to Wear, Clinton is the only man in my life who could tell me I look fat in these jeans without getting smacked across the face. Partially, because he knows what he’s talking about, and partially because he won’t care if I withhold sex that night.

Adorableness:

Sometimes the only reason I tune in to Oprah is in hopes that Nate Berkus will be giving me design advice. He’s super talented, totally generous, funny and pretty much the sexiest guy alive. If Nate was my interior designer and decorator, I’d have to seriously consider re-doing every single room in my house. He’s just that fun to look at.

Style…again (Come on; gay guys just know their style):

Tim Gunn always has that quizzical eye when he’s looking over designers’ work on Project Runway and he may instill fear in the contestants hearts, but not mine. It’s all love and adoration for Tim Gunn. The man knows what he’s talking about and his presence just commands respect. Plus, there’s something about an older gay man in a suit that just makes me swoon. When he tells you to make it work, you better make it work, or you know you’re screwed.

If only I could find one of these fabulous men wrapped up with a bow under my Christmas tree this December. We would have the best time getting dressed up for New Year’s Eve together.

Vermont just became the fourth U.S. state to legalize gay marriage, and that makes me really happy.  When California passed the law permitting gay couples to marry last year, tons of couples, like Ellen DeGeneres and Portia DeRossi (cutest couple EVER), tied the knot.  The law was overturned only a few weeks after it was passed (sigh), but now that Vermont has legalized gay marriages we can celebrate again!

Who is going to tie the pink, ruffly knot first? Here are a few gay celebrity couples we’d love to see move to Vermont and get married:

Marc Jacobs and Lorenzo Martone – Marc Jacobs is an amazing designer, and his boyfriend Lorenzo Martone is a hot Brazilain.  What’s not to like?

Lindsay Lohan and Samantha Ronson – They may have just broken up, but I was always a big fan of these two together, because I thought Sam might be the reason Lindsay’s been staying out of trouble lately.  Here’s to hoping they decide to reconcile, leave LA behind and live happily ever after in VT.

Nathan Lane and Robin Williams – No, they’re not a couple, and Robin Williams isn’t even gay.  But they were so good in The Birdcage, that I can’t help but hope that they’ll get together someday in real life, too.

Neil Patrick Harris and David Burtka – NPH is one of those guys who you really wish wasn’t gay… but if we can’t have him, we want him to be happy.  And his boyfriend, actor David Burtka, is definitely the kind of guy who can make anyone happy. (Dear God, maybe I should move to Vermont too and hope for a threesome?)

Aubrey O’Day and Lydia Hearst – Whether or not they’re actually a couple or just publicity whores, we’re going to need another hot lesbian couple to fill the spotlight if Lindsay and Sam don’t make it.

Callie and Erica from Grey’s Anatomy - These ladies were the first openly lesbian couple on network television…and then they broke up. But we all know that you never know what will happen on Grey’s, so just because they aren’t together anymore doesn’t mean that they won’t be taking jobs in a Vermont hospital and walking down the aisle (when someone will suddenly come in missing both legs with a shark hanging off their arm) next season!
