If you haven’t heard already, Facebook bought Instagram today. Mark Zuckerberg has been quoted saying the following:

“For years, we’ve focused on building the best experience for sharing photos with your friends and family. Now, we’ll be able to work even more closely with the Instagram team to also offer the best experiences for sharing beautiful mobile photos with people based on your interests.”

Some have speculated that Facebook’s latest buy is an attempt to box out the competition. Others have also complained heavily that, under Facebook’s administration, Instagram is ruined. While this may be true, Facebook, a billion dollar company, is pretty good at running the show. In fact, Facebook would probably successfully run several other companies as well. Here are some companies I think Facebook should buy:

Numbers released this week revealed that a record-breaking number of American households are  living below the poverty line. The poverty rate spiked to about 15%, or 46.2 million people nationwide- the highest amount since The Census Bureau began collecting the data 52 years ago. Minorities were hit even harder, and the numbers don’t take into account the millions and millions who are struggling just above the poverty line. Let’s hope the too-quickly rising rate reverses soon.

Iran announced they would release and pardon the two American hikers who were being held since they accidentally crossed over the border from Iraq in 2009. The two (pretty cute…) men, Shane Bauer and Josh Fattal, had previously been sentenced to 8 years in prison for what they claimed was an innocent mistake, but what Iran claimed was intentional spying. President Ahmadinejad called the move a “humanitarian gesture” out of the goodness of his heart, but there are some other theories floating around about why he really decided to release them. Some say he might be hoping for PR before his upcoming visit to the United Nations, others think they might’ve never planned on keeping the prisoners for 8 years at all. Either way, the two fine fellas will be returning stateside soon.

Netflix’ stock value dipped sharply this week, after more and more subscribers dropped their memberships due to a summer price hike. A combo plan that allows customers to receive one DVD by mail and stream any available shows or movies jumped $6 a month, or $72 a year. That increase, which Netflix bet would have little or no effect, has led to an expected 590,000 cancelled subscriptions by the end of the quarter. The last time they ended a quarter with fewer subscribers than when they started was in 2007, and back then it was only a 55,000-member drop. In response to the mass Netflix exodus, the company has split in two. Netflix will be a streaming-only company, while the new start-up Qwikster will be a DVD-by-mail service.

After years of airing reality shows that have been progressively more awful, I shouldn’t be surprised that Fox has yet again proven to be the network most willing to scrape the bottom of the barrel. Still, though, I’m amazed that the Hollywood Reporter claims there was “strong interest from several networks” in a TV show based on TFLN. Don’t get me wrong – TFLN is the second best. site. on earth (this is #1), but how exactly do you write a show about funny text messages? How could anybody have thought this would be a good idea? And isn’t there already a show highlighting embarrassing moments of 20-somethings? I think it’s called The Real World.

Maybe Fox is just trying to compete with whichever network ends up with the inevitably terrible Twitter game show, which promises to “harness Twitter to put players on the trail of celebrities in an interactive, competitive format.” Aaron Sorkin, creator of The West Wing, has also announced that he’s working on a feature film about Facebook. Seriously.

After hearing about movies and TV shows based on web sites, the film adaptations of board games like Monopoly, Candy Land, and Ouija Board that are currently in the works sound positively Oscar-worthy by comparison. What’s next, a movie about Netflix? A miniseries about Wikipedia? A weekly series based on FML?

Actually, what am I talking about? I’d totally watch that.

I am a chronic list-maker, whether I have to make a difficult decision or not.  Lists help me organize my thoughts and remember important facts and details that I need for later.  However, there are some things that I would rather forget and that’s what this week’s showdown concerns.

I’m a fan of movies.  Netflix is my homie and I try to go to the movie theater every week.  Every movie is like a 2-hour escape from reality.  Every movie is also 2-hours that you have to spend with the actors and actresses who are trying to convince you that the movie set they’re running around on is actually another planet instead of a back lot in L.A.  Sometimes, those actors and actresses get a little annoying…and sometimes they get a lot annoying.

Today we’re going to look at two pretty annoying actresses – Megan Fox and Kristen Stewart.  Which one makes the title “actress” more of an irony than a career?  Which one is more ridiculously over-hyped? We shall let the list decide.

Career
Megan Fox is enjoying a successful career of acting and posing for provocative photos.  Unfortunately for her acting career, she seems to be much more successful at posing semi-nude for just about any camera that flashes nearby.  Oh well, at least we have such gems as Confessions Of A Teenage Drama Queen to fall back on.

Kristen Stewart is young, but has already been thrown into some pretty serious roles…most of which have already been forgotten (sorry, but I was way distracted by Adam Brody to even notice little ‘ole Kristen in In The Land Of Women).  Maybe if she sparkled like her vampire boyfriend I’d actually pay attention to her while she murmurs her lines.

Point: Megan Fox. Kristen is younger and not quite as skanky as Megan Fox, so there is a chance that she’ll pull some sweet movies in the near future.  That is, if she can speak above a whisper.

Cultishness
Megan Fox has fans like you would not believe.  Most are of the geeky, slightly chubby, and introverted class, but she has a nice proportion of Maxim-reading fraternity brothers avidly following her career as well.  She’s gotten to the point where even her thumbs are famous on their own (toe thumbbssss).

Kristen Stewart shares some of the same fan base with Megan Fox, but she definitely has the pre-teen, vampire-loving market cornered.  Every boy who secretly wishes he was a vampire also secretly wishes he had Kristen Stewart by his side, constantly touching her hair and mumbling something unintelligible.

Point: Kristen Stewart. Sorry, but Megan Fox is ranked way higher on Google Trends (and in every guy’s spank bank).

Pre-Teen Cred
Megan Fox fights robots.  Rad!

Kristen Stewart dates vampires.  Hot!

Point: Kristen Stewart. Yeah, every pre-teen girl (okay, and pretty much every other girl) loves Twilight.  But the reason they love it are those hottie sparkling vampire dudes, not sweet, unassuming Bella.  Megan Fox is hot AND she gets down with the autobots.  Win.

Love Life
Megan Fox isn’t dating anyone at the moment (I think), but she’s romantically interested in just about everyone, women included.  All those Comic Con geeks might actually have a chance after all…

Kristen Stewart is dating (pretty quietly, too, I might add) the cute little dork from her movie, Speak.  Sorry, aspiring vampires.  Guess you’re going to have to find your own Bella.

Point: Megan Fox. She needs to calm herself and just pick a sexual orientation already.

Press Coverage
Megan Fox is all over the internet (and high school lockers).  We’re talking mass coverage here.  So much so that if I see one more blog post about any part of Megan Fox’s anatomy, I will seriously consider turning my computer off for a full three hours.

Kristen Stewart is, surprisingly, well covered in the media.  Apparently, the gossip hounds love Twilight, too (or their children do…).  Otherwise, I can’t come up with an explanation for the countless hours of coverage on her love life, her hair, etc.  Really? I mean…how interesting can her hair possibly be?

Point: Megan Fox. Seriously, we get it.  She’s hot.  Enough already.

Celebretard Prize Goes To: Megan Fox. Girl, you were in Transformers and some crappy Lindsey Lohan movie.  Why don’t you put down the bottle of sunless tanner and try reading a script that doesn’t cater to lonely men and geeky teenagers?

So winter is almost done and over with. Yay!

But we’ve still got a few more weeks of nasty weather ahead. Boo.

Even though we’ll start breaking out the pastels and cute shoes soon (soon being a relative term, as I personally refuse to wear pastels until it’s above 75 degrees), there will still be a host of rainy days and foul weather between now and “running through a field of flowers” weather. And, let’s be honest for a second; warm weather often means a boring desk job, during which time you will need plenty of things to do to pass the time.

So what does one do when they can‘t get out and play? Turn to the internet, of course! Here’s a quick list of ten sites to get you through the end of winter and beyond!

1) Coffeebreakarcade.com

This is exactly as the name implies. It’s an arcade of sorts filled with a ton of games that you can conceivably play on your coffee break. They range from card games to sports games. There are older and familiar puzzle games as well as new action games. The site is easy to navigate and good for a quick time-waster.

2) Y8.com

Another game site. This one has more games and isn’t as easy to find your way around in. The site is primarily for children, BUT there are still a ton of games that an adult will find entertaining. It has a wider selection of game types broken into topics along the left side of the screen. It also has coloring pages,  and what’s better for stress and boredom than a digital coloring book?

3) Bored.com

For when you’re bored. This is an index site to a ton of other sites that have things to do, read, look at, try, etc. Fun and random things from all over the web. There’s something for everyone here. There’s also a music player, but I don’t like it as much as I like…

4) Slacker.com

It’s a personal music player. Not as personalized as Pandora or Jango, but  it is work friendly with a wide array of stations. It plays everything from classical to modern hits.

5)  Web Fiction Guide

Another index. This time of blogs. Finished all the new articles on CollegeCandy? Tired of sifting through blogger.com only to be hit with a load of people whining about their boring life? Just want to read something interesting? These people have done all the leg work for you and came up with the best of the best web fiction (in blog form).

6) Web comics

There are a ton of comics on the web to read for free. Some have been running forever so just catching up on one new one can fill an afternoon. Need ideas on what to read? Look here.

7) OkCupid.com

I know what you’re thinking: dating site. Which I suppose it technically is. But it used to be The Spark back in the day (anybody remember that site?) and it’s still something fun and mindless to do when you’re bored. The quizzes will fill up so much time you won’t know what to do with yourself. Find out which He-Man Character you are. Or which breed of dog. Or what your power color is. Or start chatting with random people from around the world. Penpals and quizzes? The fun is endless.

8 ) Whirled.com

So we all know about the avatar networking sites like IMVU or MEEZ. (Or is that just me?) This one is pretty much the same but I find it has more to do, to look at and to explore when you’re bored. The games are fun and the people nice. Check it out. Get an avatar. Have some fun.

9) Miro TV

It’s TV. Basically. It’s mostly random nature shows and Chinese Drama but still it’s fun and free. Something to look forward to when you don’t have cable. Or Netflix.

10) Netflix

I usually advocate free stuff, but this one is so cheap it’s basically free. You can get a plan for ten bucks and watch as many movies as you can per month. If you like independent films and cartoons, you can watch a huge amount of things instantly on your computer. And seeing how normal movie rentals are over $5 now (and you have to leave the house to get them), Netflix is totally worth every penny. Did I mention they have a free trial?
