It’s my last day as an intern here at CC (tear). And because CC Editor Alex knows me so well, she knows that the greatest goodbye present she could have given me was a piece of 90s nostalgia. My love for the strange/awesome/tacky things of the 90s is well documented. I’m not sure quite why I love it all so much, but 90s kitsch really bring joy to my heart. So what did Editor Alex show me? The commercial for Nickelodeon Magazine!

When I was a kid, this was the most convincing commercial ever – I followed the instructions and got a parent to subscribe me to Nick Magazine. And that’s not the only thing that cheesy 90s commercials convinced me I needed. For your viewing pleasure, here are the top 10 90s commercials you had probably forgotten about.

Garnet is a student at Columbia University in New York City. She is “that person” who starts dancing at a party when everyone else is standing around, and if there were a Facebook stalking Olympics, she would be a gold medalist. We here at CC are pretty excited because we saw The Five-Year Engagement. With Jason Segel and Emily Blunt on board, it was such a great movie. The female stars of the movie, Emily Blunt and Alison Brie, recently sat down for an interview with Yourtango, proving that they are basically perfect. I’m probably one of the most nostalgic people you’ll ever meet. I love to go back to the past and relive simpler times. Reminiscing with friends about great moments, laughing about the funny things we used to do…bring it on! It just feels good. I know some say that nostalgia is just a form of denial, but it’s not like I am denying the present. I know where I am and I’m living in the now, but I don’t see what’s so wrong in dialing back a little sometimes and taking a trip down memory lane.

Now in the spirit of the past, I’ve been thinking a lot about old gadgets, fads and concepts from when we were kids that don’t exist anymore. Even kids who are 13 right now probably won’t have heard of the things that made up my childhood, which makes me feel sad and old. I wanted to compile a list of some of the things that we all grew up with that don’t even exist anymore or will soon be extinct with each new iPad that comes out.

Has anyone else noticed that most TV shows we watch now don’t have theme songs like they did in “the old days?” I completely forgot that TV show theme songs even ever existed. I remember singing along with my sisters as we waited patiently for our favorite shows to start. As soon as we heard the first notes of the telltale opening song, something magical happened.

Listening to these theme songs again, I’m reminded of the age I was at when I watched all of these shows. Rugrats? Eight. The OC? Fifteen (I watched them all on DVD way after the show was over.) Here are a few theme songs that will forever remind us of our favorite shows from the past…

Clarissa of Clarissa Explains It All

Before casting her spell on Harvey Kinkle and tweens nationwide, Melissa Joan Hart was a rather famous, scrunchie-sporting high-schooler. While dealing with annoyances such as her brother, Ferguson, Clarissa philosophized about the happenings of teenage life. After a lull in her career, Melissa Joan Hart has recently hooked up with fellow ’90s star (and fellow DWTS alum) Joey Lawrence as co-stars in ABC Family’s Melissa & Joey. Let’s hope their sitcom is more entertaining than their recent made for TV movie, My Fake Fiance.

Sam of Clarissa Explains It All

Before the days of Joey and Dawson, there was a ladder-fueled friendship that all girls adored. Every time I found myself in some kind of puzzle at the ripe age of nine, I wished I was as lucky as Clarissa. Sam, played by Sean O’Neal, was Clarrisa’s best (and forever platonic) friend. Nowadays, Sean O’Neal describes himself as a “triple threat” that the business loves. But, based on his IMDB profile, I’m not sure what business he is referring to.

Nick of All That

Joining the cast of All That in 1998, Nick Cannon launched his career by entertaining young audiences with skits such as this. He eventually starred in a show of an eponymous title, enjoyed a short-lived vocation as a rapper with hits like Gigolo, and got his band-geek on in Drumline. Now, Cannon has made several career-furthering moves, such as becoming the host of America’s Got Talent and marrying singer Mariah Carey.

Kel of All That

A few months ago, an Internet rumor spread like a Colorado wildfire that Kel Mitchell had died. I was heartbroken, praying that such a tragedy had not occurred. Lucky for me, the only thing that appeared to be truly dead was Kel’s career as a leading funnyman. Starring on All That during its prime, Kel created characters that will forever go hand-in-hand with my childhood memories. Anyone else still crave a Good Burger? With two new movies coming out in the near future, I’ll be keeping my eyes peeled for Kel and a possible comeback. Hopefully, he’ll still be rocking the braided bob and raspy, yeah-dude lingo.

Alex of The Secret World of Alex Mack

Words cannot describe how obsessed I was with Alex Mack. I watched every episode, had the book series, and often wished that I would have some weird reaction to soap – giving me the power to transform into a liquid blob— while washing the dinner dishes. You would think Larisa Oleynik’s coolness had peaked as Alex, but she went on to play Bianca Stratford in 10 Things I Hate About You, helping us teenage girls define the difference between like and love. With a few roles here and there, she also starred in a movie titled Relative Obscurity in 2007, which seems to reflect her current state in Hollywood.

Ray of The Secret World of Alex Mack

Darris Love played Alex Mack’s best friend, Ray. Thinking her powers were “cool”, he kept Alex’s secret. Since, Darris had several guest roles on shows like Sister, Sister; Buffy the Vampire Slayer; and CSI. Bet he wishes kids were still into chemically mutated teenage girls instead of blue, 8-foot tall aliens.

Big Pete Wrigley of The Adventures of Pete and Pete

Before joining Pete and Pete as one half of America’s favorite red-headed duo, Mike Maronna starred in both Home Alone movies. With lines like “Kevin, you’re such a disease” you would think that Maronna had a bright future ahead of him. He’s had a few small roles recently, including a stint in a Nada Surf video, but nothing of great significance. Perhaps if he followed his old pal Artie the Strongest Man in the World’s workout plan, he would see some better results.

Shelby Woo of The Mystery Files of Shelby Woo

Cracking spooky cases with the help of her friends, Irene Ng portrayed whip-smart teenager Shelby Woo for three years on Snick. Turns out her intelligence was no act. After playing adolescent Lindo in critically acclaimed The Joy Luck Club, she went on to attend Harvard and work at Merrill Lynch.

Bobby Walker of Cousin Skeeter

My love for Cousin Skeeter may have to do with my childhood fascination with all things puppet-related. Or, it may have been due to Robert Ri’chard and his gorgeous green eyes. He put up with all of Skeeter’s craziness for 16 episodes. Since, he’s had many small roles (with real people) and was seen most recently as recurring character Derek on Meet the Browns.

Who or what inspires your style? Many of us use celebrities (like Zooey Deschanel or Sofia Coppola) as style inspiration, even though, most of the time, they are being dressed from head to toe by the best stylists. Which we don’t have. And sometimes it’s damn near impossible to work their Hollywood looks into our not-so-Hollywood lives. I’ve made it my mission to tap into the mind of a fashion stylist and show you how to take your style inspiration – whatever it may be – and make it more you!

I know, I know – blast from the freakin’ past, right?  I think we all remember sitting in front of the boob tube as a ’90s kid watching Nickelodeon like it was our job (well, it kind of was besides sandboxes and swing sets).  I didn’t know it then, but those childhood TV shows I was obsessed with, like Clarissa Explains It All, would later serve as my style inspiration as a college kid.

OK, at first glance Clarissa’s wardrobe choices remind of something Ms. Frizzle (The Magic School Bus, come on people) would wear if she suddenly joined the biker gang, Hell’s Angels.  She’ll mix a striped shirt with polka dot leggings and add a leather jacket on top.  Now, I wouldn’t dare try that because I’m sure people would consider checking me into a mental institution, but Clarissa could pull it off because she wanted her style to represent the only person she wanted to be: herself.

Now, as we have noticed, Clarissa’s style is borderline impossible to pull off if you don’t do it perfectly (hell, it was nearly impossible to pull off in the ’90s, when it was actually happening!), which is why I kind of, sort of love it.  Because it’s a challenge.  It mixes everything wrong and turns out right.  It’s bold and risky and makes you wonder, “How are you leaving the house like that?” which is exactly what we all look for in a style icon. And the fact of the matter is, you can do it right and look cute and  unique.

Shirt, Shorts, Lace Leggings, Sunglasses, Shoes, Earrings, Bracelets

The basic idea here is to just start basic with some fun ’90s-inspired pieces, but then add a bit of you to the outfit so you stand out and look chic in the process. The good news for Clarissa style fans is that ’90s style is back this year. And what was big in the ’90s? Denim on denim. This chambray button-up is perfect – it’s light, soft, a bit oversized and looks like you nabbed it from your moms closet in ’93. Throw it on with an pair of cut-offs (style classics that will work no matter the year) for a very casual-cool Summer look.

Now, most people would stop there. But not Clarissa, and not you.

Layer lace leggings under the shorts to add that rocker edge Clarissa tried on for size as a teen, and is still very much wearable today.  Tossing in some fun accessories, like the white wayfarers, braided blue bracelets and lips earrings, add just the right amount of quirk and fun to the outfit without getting you sideways looks across campus.  And the floral low-top sneakers tie the entire look together. (Because it’s pretty difficult to wear chunky black boots in the 21st century) If floral sneaks aren’t your thing, a bright flat would stand out (in a good way!) as well.

This look is easy, it’s cute and it’s very ‘now’. And who knows? Rock this with Clarissa’s confidence and you might find your very own Sam climbing through your window.

It wasn’t until 3 years ago, at the age of 23, that I realized that a red ring won’t show up around you if you pee in my parents’ pool. I had been living in that house and swimming in that pool since the ripe age of 6, running into the freezing cold basement and struggling to pull a wet one-piece up over my ass whenever I had to pee, and it took me 17 years to learn that my parents had been lying to me all along.

Yes, I could have been peeing in that pool for years!

After spending most of my life living a lie (one that protected everyone else swimming with me, I suppose) I started to think back on other things my parents may have been lying about. Like when they told me and my brothers that they didn’t have a favorite child, when clearly that child is me. Or when they told me they’d never done drugs. Bullsh*t, parents!

And I know I’m not the only one who’s been lied to! Apparently it’s a parent’s job to seriously mislead their children. Our friends over at Lemondrop have been lied to, and the CollegeCandy writers have been living some lies, too.

John – UConn: My parents told me that any Nickelodeon show with live actors would corrupt my morals.

Elise – Stanford: My parents told me that they had Santa Claus’ phone number and would actually stage phone calls to him saying I hadn’t cleaned my room.  They even wrote it down in their address book.

Nina – Michigan State University: We’re a traditional, old world kind of family. My parents told me (half jokingly) that boys won’t like me if I don’t keep my room clean. I’ve proven it false several times throughout my life. But at the moment, considering that I don’t have a boyfriend and I have yet to see my bedroom floor, I think they could be onto something…

Brianna – Fordham University: My dad left me under the impression that I had been drinking iced coffee every morning until the age of 13, when it was actually chocolate milk on ice. I’m getting my revenge now by using his credit card to indulge my Starbucks addiction.

Lexi C – Brown: They told me that Santa Claus wasn’t real and that I was made through vaginal penetration at the age of 4. Yeah, they didn’t tell me lies.

Lauren H – The New School: I was a terrible nail biter when I was a kid (didn’t stop until I got braces and couldn’t get my fingers in there) but my mother once told me that fingernails don’t dissolve in your stomach and can get stuck and fill up your intestine. I carried that image for far too many years

Caitlin – University of Alabama: They told me we had hidden cameras in the basement so they could see what I was doing.

Brithny – Duke: That the Tooth Fairy only gave money to children whose tooth was white and sparkly. Thus began my 3-minute teeth-brushing OCD tendencies.

Rosie – Duke: My parents always told me I could be anything I wanted to be when I grew up, as long as I believed in it hard enough.  When I told them I wanted to be an elephant at age 4, my dad encouraged the idea and acted like it was totally possible if it was truly my dream. So until first grade, whenever people asked, I told them I wanted to be an elephant, and when they laughed, I thought they just didn’t understand the power of believing in yourself.

Desiree – Columbia University: My parents didn’t lie to me much. In fact, there were times when they were all too honest. Like when my mom told me I smelled like a man after volleyball practice.

Laura – St. John’s: When I was really young, my dad would tell me that eating bread crusts would make my hair curly, and since I craved long wavy hair, I did as I was told.  It didn’t take me that long to figure that one out… and I still don’t eat the crusts off my sandwiches.

Kim – University of Delaware: If I didn’t dry the pots and pans completely and put them away, centipedes would grow in the kitchen cabinets.

Kelly – Simmons College: My parents made up some crazy story about a fat man in a red suit who broke into our house by climbing down the chimney and left me presents, which he was always too lazy to wrap.

Kiki – University of Missouri: My parents allowed me to pronounce “nostalgia” as “nosta-gala” for 14 years of my life, under the pretense that it was too cute to correct. Sometimes I still slip up, and at 20 years old, it’s a little less adorable.

Samantha – UC Santa Barbara: My parents were always pretty straight-up with me, but it was my grandma who told me that if I pouted a little birdie would come and poop on my lip and if I crossed my eyes they would get stuck like that. I’m 20, and still need my looks for a few years, so I’m not taking any chances!

Cristina – Michigan State: My dad would always tell me he had a mini-TV and was watching me all day in case I did anything bad.  I think I still believe it.

Sarabeth – University of Texas: Now that I think of it, my parents didn’t really lie to me because I was the smart-aleck who called bulls*** on everything, even when I was 5.

Random I know, but my mom never let me buy ripped jeans saying she wasn’t going to “spend money on something that was already ruined,” and that “ripped jeans are for homeless people.” Now that I’m on my own, I’ve found that there is actually ONE perk of being financially independent and that would be ripped, torn and tattered jeans. Take that, mommy dear.

Second, I know I’m way to old to care about the Kid’s Choice Awards, but – call me a teenybopper or call me a loser – there is just something a lot more fun (like, um, the goo that gets dumped on celebs) than your typical stuffy awards shows.

So it makes perfect sense that I hearted Cameron Diaz’s look at this year’s Kid’s Choice Awards. She looked cute, fresh and not at all like a homeless person.
