This week, I’m in nostalgia/angry mode. Angry because my Dbag of an ex-boyfriend has decided to try to start calling me again (barf). Nostalgic because when I’m trying to blow off steam, I tend to go into organization mode and this time around, my music collection got my attention. While re-labeling my iTunes collection I came across an old favorite album of mine: AFI’s ‘The Art of Drowning.’ It immediately took me back to my punk rocker days in middle school. The days I would trick myself out in Hot Topic clothes from head to toe before my town even got one. Embarrassing, yes. But while my fashion sense wasn’t top notch, I did have good taste in music as a 12-year-old.

About the Band:
AFI, or A Fire Inside, started back in 1991 in California and currently consists of Davey Havok, Adam Carson, Hunter Burgan, and Jade Puget. They formed when the members were all in high school, but they disbanded when they went off to separate colleges. I’ve always appreciated the phrase “no offense but (insert ANYTHING!)” for it’s ability to take away all offense to the next part of the statement. I went through about a thirteen year phrase where I truly believed that saying “no offense, but” before I said the most heinous thing possible would make it impossible for the person to be mad at me.

Needless to say I lost a few (all) friends over this phase.

As the time starts to tick down at school I’m not only getting increasingly nostalgic (remember that hilarious time I fell on the ice and broke my tailbone!??!) but also increasingly eager to dole out some honesty before certain people go out to the real world. Okay, okay, I may be a bit biased on this topic, due to my heartbreak three years ago at the end of my freshman year of college. But every year around this time, I get a little nostalgic about this issue.

All of my first year, I dated a boy from high school who went to college 14 hours away from me, and we somehow managed to make it through the whole year with visits, emails, and a hefty phone bill. I could not wait to get home for the summer and live in the same town again. But, upon returning, it was evident that things were different between us and he broke up with me. I was devastated and could not understand why this had happened. What did I do wrong?

The thing that I wish someone had told me originally is that, in college, people CHANGE, in some way or another, no matter what. And that’s not always a bad thing! I know I have grown into who I am over these four years and feel confident in what I want to do with my life and how I will get there.
