Fall semester is in full swing and it’s starting to feel like you’re doing the same thing every week. Class. Study. Drink. Hangover. Poor Theme Party Costume Choice. Homework. Switch things up by taking advantage of a long weekend or your fall break (if you’re that lucky) by checking out our Weekend Getaway guides.   We’ve already covered Boston, Toronto and Austin. Now, we wanna take you on a road less traveled (unless you’re Paula Deen)…to Savannah, Georgia.

To the young, curious child version of myself, Savannah, Georgia was synonymous with Girl Scouts —the scratchy uniform I hated, the vest that always seemed to have less badges than the rest of the other Brownie Scouts, and, of course, Girl Scout Cookies! Yum, I love those things!

However, that’s only one part of Savannah. Yes, Girl Scouts of America was founded there by Juliette Gordon Low and I’m sure visiting brings back many fond memories to the to former Girl Scout tourists.  But, Savannah is filled with centuries of history, charm, and even some ghosts! If you’re looking to get out of the hustle and bustle of your college campus for a long weekend, head down to the ol’ South and check out quaint Savannah, Georgia!

Touristy Spots:

River Street- Located right on the Savannah River, River Street is one of the most historic areas of Savannah.  The cobblestone streets take you back in time hundreds of years as you take in the historic beauty. There are numerous shops, restaurants, and even street performers that will provide entertainment for hours.  One of my favorite shops is the River Street Sweets candy shop.  Here, you will find the most delicious saltwater taffy, as well as fudge, chocolate, praline treats…you name it, they have it!  Seriously, bring your wallet and your sweet tooth! At the end of River Street is the Waving Girl statue.  According to legend, Florence Martus waved at passing ships, waiting for her own true love to return.  She never missed a ship in the forty years that she greeted the passing ships. Tell me that’s not romantic?!

Take a Tour- Seeing Savannah by tour trolley is the best way to soak in all the history it has to offer.  I suggest Oglethorpe Trolley Tours. For only $15 you can see 90 minutes worth of historic hot spots, beautiful churches, and cemeteries. All tours are narrated by a tour guide, so you’ll learn some interesting facts about historic Savannah. Plus, you can get on and off the trolley and explore on your own. Seriously, this is the way to go—you’ll get the most bang for your buck!

Juliette Gordon Low’s Birthplace- In case you weren’t able to visit as a brownie scout, you must visit now and pay some homage to the lady, Juliette Gordon Low, that made those Thin Mints so famous!  Her southern mansion gives insight into early Girl Scout history, as well as shows some of what daily life was like during the early 1900s.

Restaurants:

Huey’s on the River- Located right on River Street, Huey’s on the River offers some New Orleans’ flair in Savannah.  Expect long waits, but the food will make up for it, especially the beignets, or the gumbo, or the muffalettas. Yum! Order anything on the menu, you can’t go wrong.

The Lady and Son’s Restaurant- Paula Deen. Need I say more?! Paula Deen is my absolute favorite chef, so when I heard that she had a restaurant in Savannah I had to try it! Everything she cooks clogs my arteries makes my mouth water! I don’t know if it’s my butter obsession or because when I eat any of her recipes, calories don’t matter to me, but her food is pure bliss.  And The Lady and Son’s Restaurant is no different!  The food will leave you more than satisfied and the dessert will warm your soul! Lady and Son’s is definitely a must-try!

The Pirate’s House- This restaurant has been in service since 1753.  Originally, The Pirate’s House was an inn for seafarers and offered them food and drink in exchange for stories about sailing the seven seas.  Today, it acts as a restaurant serving only the most delicious food! The menu ranges from seafood to pasta to steaks and burgers. Try any of the jolly ol’ grub and you won’t be disappointed.  A fun fact: the restaurant is claimed to be haunted because of the secret passageways under the restaurant that led to the river. Spooky!

Nightlife:

Oktoberfest- One of the biggest festivals in Savannah takes place on River Street each year.  Enjoy a part of the original Oktoberfest, Savannah style.  Between the Weiner Dog Races, bratwurst, and hundreds of beers from around the world, you can’t go wrong. There’s even a fried beer stand this year! At night, you can enjoy the Fireworks put on annually by Wet Willies Restaurant (also another cool restaurant to try)! Sounds like a good October weekend to me!

Ghost Tour- No history is better than haunted history! Savannah is known for the supernatural occurrences so you MUST try out one of these tours.  There are many companies that offer ghost tours, so pick creepiest one and put your ghost hunting skills to work!

Kevin Barry’s Irish Pub- The good ol’ Irish settled in Savannah, so there’s a huge Irish cultural influence there.  Check out this pub for some delicious Irish-American pub grub, grab a pint and enjoy the awesome performers that will have you singing along to “Molly Malone” all night long. Slainte!

Lodging:

The epicenter of Savannah is River Street. Some recommended hotels are the Hyatt Regency or for a more historic feel the River Street Inn, which dates back to the 1800s.  Both are quality hotels, located right on River Street, and provide you with easy access to numerous historic hot spots, restaurants and shops!

4th of July weekend is almost here! Can I get a woot woot? Anyone? No?

Well, you will be woot-wooting when you know how much easier I am about to make your life. Surely you are going to a BBQ of some sort this weekend and as if figuring out your outfit isn’t hard enough (something that says, ‘yeah I’m patriotic’ but doesn’t look like it came from your dad’s closet) you also have to figure out what to make for your friend’s/aunt’s/brother’s best friend’s girlfriend’s BBQ. You want to look like you tried (showing up with a bag of Tostitos and salsa, albeit tempting, is not on your radar) but you are NO Paula Deen.

Hell, you’re not even Rachael Ray.

Well, thank god you know about this article. Drinks and desserts, my friends. Drinks and desserts. These are the crowd pleasers. The attention getters. And I’ll be damned if I send you to a party and let some other chick’s dish get more attention.

So here you go: two easy to make – but delightful to look at  and delicious to eat/drink -  4th of July BBQ potluck showstoppers.

The Drink to Know about:
The Strawberry Sucker
Add a skewer of blueberries for a splash of blue! So easy to make, so yummy to drink and the more your guests drink, the more impressed they will be with your creation!

Ingredients:
Ice cubes
1 ounce vodka (2 tablespoons)
2 ounces strawberry schnapps (4 tablespoons)
Club soda
1 strawberry, halved

Directions:
Fill a highball glass with ice cubes. Add the vodka and schnapps and top with club soda. Garnish with the strawberry.

The Dessert to Know about:
Red-White-and-Blue Strawberry Shortcake
So simple yet so pretty and it makes you look SO creative. Throw some coconut shavings in between the strawberries for texture if you’re a fan of the coconut! And if you’re feeling daring, go for a funfetti cake instead of a yellow. Whatever makes you happiest.

Ingredients
1 (18.25 ounce) package yellow cake mix
1 (8 ounce) container frozen whipped topping, thawed
1 pint blueberries, rinsed and drained
2 pints fresh strawberries, rinsed and sliced

Directions
Prepare cake according to package directions and bake in a 9×13 inch pan. Cool completely.
Frost cake with whipped topping. Place blueberries in a square in the corner, and arrange sliced strawberries as stripes to make an American flag.

Chill until serving. And then chill with a Strawberry Sucker as everyone licks their plates clean.

I want to go to there.

Could life be any more stressful right now? If midterms weren’t enough, we have to find the time to get our bodies in shape for Spring Break, watch a buttload of TV, and figure out what we’re going to wear for St. Patrick’s day.

I have been an anxious mess all week; even last night’s 90-minute yoga sesh didn’t ease my mind. Instead of letting everything go and focusing on my breathing, I used Downward Dog as a time to notice how fat my thighs were and how badly I needed a pedicure. Then I started thinking of all the other things I could be doing with that time, making a mental list in my head.

It’s exhausting. I just wish I could be somewhere else for an hour. Somewhere with no stress, no assignments, no anything but pure bliss and relaxation. Like in bed…with Joel McHale and Paul Rudd…while Paula Deen feeds us big, buttery cupcakes. Or on a yacht with Beyonce and Jay-Z, just hanging out and admiring the brand new Louboutin pumps they got me for my birthday.

Just thinking about it all makes me feel a little less stressed, less anxious. Since I know I’m not the only one freaking out right now, I asked the CollegeCandy writers to tell me what they would do if they had an hour of total freedom.

Rachael- University of Miami: Given the way this week has gone, I’d say sleep, but assuming I’m not in the middle of midterm madness, either be in a Broadway musical or speak at a General Assembly meeting for the United Nations.

Jasmine – Northern Arizona University: I would live out “Tik Tok” with Ke$ha and Rihanna.

Lauren – University of Michigan: I’d be on the Chelsea Lately round table for two episodes.

Kelly – University of Iowa: I would make sweet, sweet love with David Beckham while the rest of the AC Milan soccer team furiously made enough barbacoa burritos to last me my lifetime.

Jessica – Delaware: I would have great sex followed by eating giant ice cream sundaes with no calories.

Noa – CU Boulder: I’d smoke a bowl with my parents (because that would be really funny, no?) and then eat my mom’s famous lasagna. The whole thing.

Melanie – Northeastern University: I’d freeze time and raid Saks 5th Avenue

Anna – Northeastern: I would eat a never ending bowl of tomato chicken and orzo soup, with extra crackers.

Carly – Grinnell: Oh, wow. I’m pretty sure I would choose to spend an hour learning how to temper chocolate from a world-class pastry chef. Yeah . . . that seems like a skill that would come in handy for hundreds of future occasions.

Sarabeth – University of Texas: I’m going to have to go with being able to buy whatever I want for an hour with everything absolutely free. Think supermarket-sweep but in Neiman Marcus.

Desiree – Columbia University: I’m dying for an massage. Exam stress almost always ties my back in knots, so I’d spend my hour being rubbed head to toe with the richest oils and lotions.

Brittany – University of Saint Thomas: I would spend an hour spooning with Sidney Crosby in bed. Eating french silk pie.

Christie – NC State: If I could do anything for an hour I would want to ride a gondola in Venice, on a beautiful sunny day, with David Beckham giving me a back massage and an orchestra playing along the side of the river as I rode by.

TV is like real life, right?

First, every television set in America goes digital, and now TV is going 3D? Yes, people, the future is here. According to MSNBC, ESPN will be the first network to go 3D this June, dubbing their new station ESPN 3D (rather original) and fulfilling every sports fanatic’s wet dream for a decade.

One of the main purposes is to help take a step for all TV to become 3D. While we can all do without A&E’s Hoarders popping out of the TV and taking over our living rooms, I’m sure we can all agree that there is nothing more heavenly than being able to reach out and touch Dr. McDreamy’s fine looking bod. In fact, much like adding a little extra buttercream on top of a cupcake, shooting my favorite shows in 3D will only make them that much sweeter:

Sex and the City: Who wouldn’t wanna reach out and give Samantha a high five while she gets it on with one of her (many) hotties in 3D?

Hung: For those of you that don’t know, Hung is about a man who is, well, hung. Enough said.

Portuguese soccer: Okay, what would you do if Cristiano Ronaldo was in your TV room in 3D?  If your answer is “nothing” you’re a big, fat liar.

The Food Network: There is nothing I want more than to have Paula Deen in my living room. OK, so maybe in my kitchen. Cooking me something. With lots of butter. But I’ll take her Krispy Kreme Casserole in 3D any day.

Gossip Girl: Chanel bags, YSL heels, Chuck Bass and Dan Humphrey nose to nose with me?  I’m not leaving my couch ever again.

Paula Deen’s Home Cooking: You see, I’m a nutrition major. This (in theory) means that I should be a pretty healthy eater. The thing I love about Paula Deen’s cooking is that she makes the unhealthiest food possible. I have yet to see one of her southern dishes prepared without butter, mayonnaise, shortening, or some combination of the three. Watching her make disgustingly delicious food makes me feel like I’m indulging without actually consuming and subsequently gaining ten pounds of lard.

Sandra Lee’s Semi-Homemade: Sandra Lee basically embodies who I want to be when I’m in my 30s. Why? Because she’s hot, knows how to enjoy a good cocktail (or five), and can whip up an amazing meal without actually doing any of the dirty work herself. Plus, she makes the cutest little “tablescapes” out of practically nothing. Basically, watching her show gives you hope that you can be old and still have a life (and good looks to boot).

Barefoot Contessa: First of all, the host of this show is named Ina Garten. (I’m a sucker for a good name pun). Secondly, you get to watch her make amazingly complex food that you would never dare to prepare yourself without a culinary degree. The real kicker about this show, however, is its attempt to include acting along with food preparation. There is nothing better than watching Ina make an obviously fake phone call to a “friend” that she probably met minutes before filming the show. Purely hilarious – you really gotta see it to believe it.

Good Eats: Now, I’m usually not a fan of the nighttime shows, but this one really does have its moments. Alton Brown takes a quirky science-y approach to all types of food ranging from cole slaw to beef jerky. Most of his comedic attempts are a tad over the top, but Mr. Brown does have his moments. For some real entertainment, I strongly suggest you check out the episode on gumbo. Seriously, it’s a winner.

Some other shows to check out while you’re flipping through the channels: Everyday Italian with Giada De Laurentiis, Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives, Throwdown with Bobby Flay (hottay), and Unwrapped. Oh, and don’t miss the newest show, Will Work for Food, coming out January 19th. Word on the street is that the star, Adam Gertler, is quite the looker (for a Food Network host, of course).

You know who agrees with me? Paula Dean. You know, the lady with the best show on the Food Network, hands down? Paula cooks with enough butter to grease the entire state of New Hampshire, and never apologizes. I love her. I want to be like her when I grow up. Also, she has this recipe for scrumptious banana french toast. It’s not light, it’s not healthy, but I have made it before and it is worth every. single. carb.
