Is Rihanna Looking for Love in a Hopeless Place?

Rumor has it that Chris Brown is the ‘shocking’ guest to appear on Rihanna’s ‘Birthday Cake’ track. Is this for real? That shit cray. The fact that this is even circulating is so disappointing. Surely a woman talented enough to be one of the top-selling artists in the world at 24 is smarter than this? I understand that people make mistakes (or totally f*ck up in Brown’s case), and I do believe it is possible for them to earn the privilege of a second chance. But there is a certain responsibility Rihanna has (whether fair or not) that comes with being a influential pop icon. For an artist whose success is founded on songs of female empowerment, this sends a pretty mixed message. There is nothing ‘hard’ about being in a physically abusive relationship. And it’s not like Chris Brown has been working to change his ‘I’m quite possibly the biggest douche in the world’ image. No one should think Chris is a ‘new man’ after the Grammy twitter fiasco. Dude’s List: 11 Things No Woman Should Put Up With In a Relationship

A relationship often requires a bit of sacrifice and a lot of compromise. We all have to learn to accept and roll with aspects of our partner, or his/her life, that we don’t always understand or necessarily agree with. That’s called maturity, right? And building intimacy? Here are 11 things that no woman should ever put up with in a relationship… Read More »

Rutgers Reminds Us: Why Do We Haze?

Photo and girls involved totally unrelated to story.

What is the meaning of a sorority exactly?

As an outsider, a self proclaimed anti-sorostitute, I’ve never really understood the purpose.  It’s a “special bond” they tell me.  A “sisterhood” they say.  Here is what I know:  I have a sister, and I have never struck her with a paddle 201 times in one week.  She has never been at the hospital with blood clots and welts on her ass that somehow symbolize our “loyalty” to each other.  I have not forced her to endure this pain to prove to me that she is worthy of being my sister.

Unfortunately, an anonymous Sigma Gamma Rho pledge at Rutgers University cannot say the same.  When she began to pledge the sorority, she was told that they do not condone hazing.  It took her one whole week, until she couldn’t even sit down, to finally go to the hospital and turn in the girls who had been beating her endlessly during the duration of her “non-hazing.”  Six girls were arrested and charged with aggravated hazing.

We are all thinking the same thing: how could these girls do this to her and the other pledges? It is cruel, evil, and outrageous.  But here is the bigger question: how could the pledges allow this happen to themselves? Joining a sorority is an elective activity.  No one forced these girls to pledge.  It was their choice.  Even though they were told that hazing was not condoned, why didn’t they opt to leave once they saw a paddle?  And even if they were too afraid to leave, why the hell did they go back for day two, three, four, etc?  Read More »

Cannibal Family ‘Was Just Following Their Religion’

steak.jpgThis is one of the worst news stories I’ve ever, ever heard.

Two young boys in the Czech Republic were kept for months in a basement dungeon by their mother. Not only were they sexually and physically abused, naked in their own urine and chained up, they were also forced to cut themselves. Why? So that their mother could feed their raw flesh to their relatives.

The entire torture was conducted in accordance with text messages from the leader of their “religious” group, the Grail Movement. This leader is referred to only as “The Doctor.”

And this is a true story.

The mother, who is currently on trial, now claims that she was brainwashed. She says she’s sorry and doesn’t know how she could have done such things.

I don’t buy it for one second. You know how this was discovered? A neighbor caught it on his baby TV monitor. According to various articles, that is because the mother had her own TV monitor hooked up so that she could watch the boys while they were in agony whenever she felt like it. To me, there is no coming back from that.

Now the questions seem to be (1) will the court buy the “brainwashed” excuse, and (2) how far is a religious organization allowed to go in the name of their beliefs? Read More »
