Fashion Porn: Plaid Orgy

plaid introI had an aversion to plaid for a really long time. Seeing it gave me hives as I remembered the days I was forced to wear it every day in the form of a pleated skirt paired with an ill-fitting polo and some tall navy socks.

Shudder.

But that’s all changed thanks in part to my (Gossip) girls doin’ their thing on the UES of New York City. Well, that and the fact that designers have embraced the classic pattern this season. Plaid is everywhere right now and it’s so cute I can’t even think of a good enough word to describe my newfound love for the stuff. Yes, I’ve gotten over my plaid-allergy and I want it all. There has never been a better or easier time to reclaim this fabulous fabric. Just leave your old plaid skirt in the closet (unless it’s Halloween… or you’re into role playing) and embrace a more sophisticated and updated plaid piece instead.

There are many ways to wear plaid, despite your shape, style or budget.  Every type of clothing and accessory imaginable can be found in plaid this season.  Whether you want to make a statement with a plaid coat, or embrace this trend secretly (via Victoria), there’s the perfect piece (or pieces!) out there for you. 8 Under $20: JC Penney

8under600x360

The recession is bad news for anyone looking to get a job, save some money or sell a house. But it’s great news for fashionistas! Stores that were once dowdy and just screamed “crazy cat lady” are bringing in new designers to create chic lines at lower prices.

Take JC Penney. When was the last time you stopped in there (not counting those post-Starbucks bathroom emergencies)? I know: never. Because their clothes were cheap, outdated and just not cute. Well, that’s not the case anymore! JCP now sells several lines by popular designers (Charlotte Ronson, Nicole Miller, and Allen B. Schwartz, to name a few) and they not only have stuff that is totes cute, it’s totes affordable as well.  I can’t wait to add some of these pieces to my closet… Read More »

Spring 2010 Fashion Week All-Stars

fashion_week_runway_show

This week our usual Fashion Porn was placed on the back burner to make room for the fashion lover’s Christmas: Mercedes Benz Fashion Week.

As fashion week wraps up, I already have a long shopping list of what I must find once Spring clothes hit the shelves.  While I’m aware that this is months away, the collections this year were so beautiful that I’m going to have to start saving up in order to stock my closet with the affordable versions of the designs I saw this week.

And although it’s hard to play favorites with the many diverse collections that walked the runways, there are five fabulous designers that really stood out amongst the prints, sky high heels, and oversized accessories at this year’s NY Fashion Week. Fashion Week MVPs, if you will

Celebrity Chic on the Cheap: If I Were a Boy, I’d Look This Cute Too.

beyonce[Every week our style guru takes a celebrity look and breaks it down for you, our poor college fashionista. What does that mean? It means that while the celebrities are spending $5,000 on an ensemble, you don’t have to. All you have to do is click on the goods and - boom - you can buy the entire ensemble. Yes, we know; there is a spot for her in heaven.]

It is this picture right here that really makes me hate lady B. We all know she can sing, she can dance hella good, she has a mom who can make her clothes on command and lady love looks daaaamn good in a leotard.

So it’s not fair that she can pull off both the leotard AND the boyish look. Can’t you share some – a smidgen of – that posh, fierce, damn-I-look-and-sound-good with the rest of us mere mortals? She takes a ‘fit that most of us woudldn’t know how to make look like we didn’t grab from our 80 year old grandpa’s closet (or 30 year old brother’s wardrobe from high school) and turns it into something worth pining for.

Not to mention the suspenders are probabaly the BEST way to keep from giving the paparazzi (or in my case, my boss) from seeing some crackage.

So here is this week’s Celebrity Chic on the Cheap: If I Were a Boy, I’d Look This Cute Too Read More »

Rock The Look: Fall Fashion Trends Courtesy of New York Fashion Week

ny_fw_f4kq.jpg

Even the glamorous world of fashion has been hit hard by the recession. In a time where most people are cutting back, spending money on designer outfits just doesn’t seem reasonable. At this year’s New York Fashion Week, many designers have cut costs by hosting smaller runway shows or gallery presentations.

But more than how, designers have changed what they are showing. Their goal is to show women looks that they must have; looks that will get them reaching for their wallets. So what can you expect to be snatching up for fall? A little of this, a little of that and a whole lot of 80s… Read More »

A Look Back at Fashion in ‘08.

2008-fashion-trends.jpg

2008 was an interesting year for fashion. Gone (thankfully) were the maternity tops of 2007, replaced by blasts from the past inspirations from the 20s through the days of our best pals on Beverly Hills 90210. We saw everything from the mom-jean to the 90s flannel button down. Some of it was fab, and some of it… not so much. So, let’s take a look at this year’s fashion highs and fashion oh-hell-no’s.

Because without the crap we can’t appreciate the couture. Read More »

Love It Or Hate It: Plaid

plaid.jpgI’m itching to go shopping. You know how it goes – everything you see in ads, on commercials and on the street looks so cute you have to have it. I am having one of those weeks, which is never good during holiday season. Between the sales and the amount I have to spend on other people, getting near a mall to shop for myself is dangerous.

I don’t even have anything particular that I want or need. I just want. Gimme, gimme, gimme.

I want new jeans, new boots and some new tops to wear to class. No more sweatshirts for this lady; I am ready to dress cute for class. And I think the perfect look would be plaid. It is cute without trying too hard, it is versatile, and the flannel shirts are nice and warm. But is it ugly? Sometimes I wonder if I really like something, or if I convince myself I like it because it is at Urban Outfitters.

Yes? No? What do you think about plaid?
