Celebrity Chic on the Cheap: Michelle Williams is Polka Dot Pretty

Michelle Williams has had a pretty great year. Between receiving oral from Ryan Gosling and being chosen to play Marilyn Monroe in a critically acclaimed, Oscar-nominated film, I’d say she’s probably one of the luckiest ladies in Hollywood. I’ve been a huge fan of hers since she was the tortured girl next door (not named Joey Potter) on Dawson’s Creek, and I love that she is getting so much recognition for her talent and beauty. Budget Stylista: Polka Dots

Polka dots had a big come back this season. Modern takes on polka-dots have been shown all over the runway by designers who were inspired by the vintage print. Polka dots manage to make a dress look chic without being too busy. They can also make a classic purse look up-to-season. This trend ranges from bold to understated, and is far from just black and white. Seen on the models of Marc Jacobs and Diane von Furstenberg, and now here on CC. Three looks with pieces for just under $35!

Celebrity Chic on the Cheap: Kirsten Dunst is Polka Dot Pretty

Kirsten Dunst hasn’t really been relevant to me, personally, since Bring It On. And I haven’t heard her name with any regularity since the last Spiderman movie she was in. For a long time, I’m pretty sure she was low-key on the Lindsay Lohan lifestyle program. Nearly every time I saw a paparazzi shot of her, she looked strung out and like she had given up on…everything. But she seems to have fought through her existential crisis and is going to be in five movies in the next 18 months (including one with Ryan Gosling, lucky her…). Lately, she has been on the promo circuit and her style has been really cute. Kind of boho, kind of glam, and pretty much consistently adorable. Read More »

Budget Stylista: Seeing Spots

Being a college girl on a budget, my favourite patterns are ones that never truly go out of style. Stripes, plaid and polka dots are a few of the staple patterns that can be found almost every season. These patterns are something that you can’t really ever call a trend, because they will always appear in some shape or form each season. Lucky for people like myself with an eternal love for polka dots, designer heavy weights such as Marc Jacobs and Stella McCartney had us seeing spots for their F/W 2011 collections. Yes ma’am, the polka dot is big (but not literally) this season.

What I love about polka dots, is that they have a playful, feminine, flirty vibe to them. That and they are one of the easiest prints to wear (and mix and match!) The size of the spots vary as do the colour combinations, meaning there are spots out there for everyone. Though polka dots are still a pattern, it is quite subtle for those gals just dipping their toes into the world of patterns. Read More »

Celebrity Chic on the Cheap: Kelly Osbourne is Breezy and Beautiful

[Welcome to Celebrity Chic on the Cheap, where our style guru takes a celebrity look and breaks it down for you, our poor college fashionista. What does that mean? It means that while the celebrities (like fashion winner Whitney Port) are spending $5,000 and more on an ensemble, you an spend way less...and save the rest for Margarita Mondays.]

Kelly Osbourne’s career is a total mystery to me.

So, her rock star father gets an MTV reality show where she gets to be a bratty, gothy, embarrassing teenager in front of millions of people, falls into oblivion after the show is cancelled, stays there for a few years, loses weight, learns how to apply makeup, goes on Dancing with the Stars…and is suddenly a red carpet staple?

Um…what? I’m baffled.

I can’t knock the girl’s hustle, though. I mean, she has the Joan Rivers’ stamp of approval and I don’t, so all I can do is bow down to her greatness…and try to recreate her fresh, young, trendy, bold-without-being-tacky style for myself. Read More »

I Love Your Style: Diablo Cody

Who or what inspires your style? Many of us use musicians (like Debbie Harry) or movie characters (like Annie Hall) as style inspiration, even though, most of the time, they are being dressed from head to toe by the best stylists. Which we don’t have. And sometimes it’s damn near impossible to work their Hollywood looks into our not-so-Hollywood lives. I’ve made it my mission to tap into the mind of a fashion stylist and show you how to take your style inspiration – whatever it may be – and make it more you!

Diablo Cody is one cool lady.  Not just because she has a wicked awesome tattoo on her arm of a pinup girl, the fact that she won an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay for Juno, her previous profession of being a talented “clothing-remover,” or the fact that her name means “devil” in Spanish.  All of those help make her pretty neat, but there’s just something about her, something I can’t quite put my finger on, that oozes awesome.

And she wraps it all up perfectly in her uniquely fabulous look.

Diablo is pretty under the radar when it comes to her style, but I fell in love with it the first time I saw her being interviewed for Juno.  It’s unlike anything I’ve ever seen before; the innocent ’50s housewife meets the rock-and-roll dominatrix. She’s got the whole pin-up vibe going on, but still manages to look totally modern. It’s romantic yet somehow dark and edgy. Think animal prints and spikes meet polka dots and ruffles, then get married and live happily ever after.

It shouldn’t work, but it does.

Celebrity Chic on the Cheap: Cameron Diaz is All Torn Up

cameron-copyIf it’s two things I love it’s ripped jeans and the Kid’s Choice Awards.

Random I know, but my mom never let me buy ripped jeans saying she wasn’t going to “spend money on something that was already ruined,” and that “ripped jeans are for homeless people.” Now that I’m on my own, I’ve found that there is actually ONE perk of being financially independent and that would be ripped, torn and tattered jeans. Take that, mommy dear.

Second, I know I’m way to old to care about the Kid’s Choice Awards, but – call me a teenybopper or call me a loser – there is just something a lot more fun (like, um, the goo that gets dumped on celebs) than your typical stuffy awards shows.

So it makes perfect sense that I hearted Cameron Diaz’s look at this year’s Kid’s Choice Awards. She looked cute, fresh and not at all like a homeless person.

For those of you who aren’t into watching programs that 10 year olds watch, I’ve broken it down for you here.
