Have you been singing all your life?
Not really. I really only tried to sing seriously once I started playing guitar… which was, like, 10 years ago. I started with karaoke trying to do Prince and Creed songs if I remember correctly.

How would you describe your style of singing?
People have told me my voice sounds like Lenny Kravitz and I have no idea how… I definitely do have a little rasp. I don’t know, I just sing from the heart to whatever the purpose of the song is.

Do you write your own music? If so, where do you get inspiration for your lyrics?
Yeah, I write everything. I pull from my own experiences a lot, but some is also just from observing life and the things that none of us are spared from. Empathy is so useful in life, and so many of us just neglect giving time and attention to our friends while they’re in flux… so moral is, be a better friend and you may get more lyrics.

What is your ultimate goal for the future?
I would say that it’s just to put everything I have into my music and hope it resonates. I think that naturally, for those of us who aren’t well-known, it’s easy to feel as though you’re forcing your music onto people sometimes. But we all have those deep personal connections to certain music, so I guess the ultimate reward is to be able to do that for someone just like it’s been done for me. That’s the pinnacle of making music— having someone hanging on your every word because they’ve felt the exact same thing that you’re singing about.

What attracts you most when you first meet a girl?
Hmmm, physically, I usually hold judgment off until I’ve assessed the entire package… way too methodical, right?! But as far as personality, definitely a sense of humor and kindness.

How would you describe your type of girl?
I don’t have a type, I swear. I have noticed that I like lower lip piercings, though. And I usually think a girl looks the best with her hair pulled back. Size isn’t much of a factor either. I’m, like, 6’2, so I don’t mind taller chicks at all. And smaller girls can make you feel like you’re their superhero bodyguard so that’s not a problem either.

What’s your biggest turn-off?
Physically… muscles. A lot of muscle definition weirds me out a bit. I definitely like girly girls. Personality… a mean girl. I want a girl with a big heart. I can deal with a little crazy, in fact, I expect it, but a mean girl is not attractive at all.

What’s the best date you’ve ever been on?
I’m super laid back, so the best dates to me are the dates that don’t feel like dates at all. The day I moved out of my parents’ house I saw a pretty girl I knew at the store. I ended up texting her a bit throughout the day, and we ended up buying pillows to make a pretend couch in my new apartment and we watched Zoolander— my favorite movie of all time. I’ll go with that one. Very memorable for me.

What do you enjoy doing besides singing/playing the guitar?
I am a huge gym rat. Lifting weights is probably my favorite thing to do, usually five or six days a week. I’m very tough on myself about diet and exercise. Aside from that I love basketball, MMA, golf, football, soccer, and working on cars.

What’s the best pick-up line that’s been used on you?
A few months ago a girl at a club (she was kinda hammered) just stood there staring at me from a foot away for an uncomfortable, had to be six or seven, seconds then she just says, “can I touch these?” and starts repetitively poking my dimples… That’s my favorite so far.

Any song I can relate to and feel. Genre-wise though, I’d have to say pop/rock type stuff.

What inspires the lyrics for the music you write?
My relationship with everyone and everything in this world. I also write about relationships that I see from my perspective.

What goals do you have for the future?
I’d love to be touring on a big stage one day and have my records in stores. Music is my passion and I will continue to pursue it ‘cause it’s what I love to do and it’s the only consistent thing in my life that can make me happy.

Where’s your favorite spot to sit down with your guitar and sing?
The beach, but since I don’t live by one by one my bedroom is the spot.

How long have you been singing?
Ever since I started songwriting, so probably five years now.

Was getting into the music business something you’ve always dreamt of doing?
I never really thought of music. I was originally going to go to film school but once the opportunity came to go to a recording studio, I kind of just jumped on it and put college on hold because there was a really good chance I could come up with some great stuff.

Do you have any music idols?
My favorite band is Sublime and I also love country music with a good story to it.

What’s your ultimate goal for the future?
Eventually I’d like to get signed to a major record label and put out a full-length CD.

What do you look for in a girl?
I like it when girls are close to their family because I’m really close to mine.

What’s the most corny pick-up line you’ve ever used?
Well one time I was at a carnival with some friends and saw this girl that I thought was really pretty so my friends thought I should go talk to her. I went up to her and asked if she wanted to go on the Ferris wheel and she’s like, “Well, won’t one of your friends go with you?” I said, “No, no one will go with me and I’m afraid of heights so I just want somebody to go up there with me.” It actually worked!

What’s your idea of a perfect date?
A baseball game. It’s just a fun overall time.

What was your worst date?
Nothing really comes to mind, but one thing that bothers me on dates is when girls are constantly texting. It just makes things really awkward.

What’s your favorite food?
BBQ. Going down south and having really good BBQ is always one of the highlights of the trip.

What’s one of your hobbies?
For awhile I was helping some of my friends who are also artists by doing a little bit of producing and helping them record some of their songs and putting things together.  When I was applying for film schools I needed to have a portfolio so I was also working with music videos, shooting some here and there.

Why He Rocks: Michael’s passion for music is so inspiring. And his voice may or may not take our breath away. Okay, it does. Ahhhh.

What age did you start singing?
There’s no specific age I started singing, as I always loved to sing. I remember singing for hours when I was a little boy and that it really started to bug my brother and sister.

When did you decide you wanted to make your talent into a career?
I always had the dream of being on stage, just me and my guitar in front of a crowd of thousands. But the first time I really realized that this dream could actually come true was in 2008 when I started to post videos on YouTube and people from all over the world were like, “Wow boy, you got it!”

What was going through your mind when you were getting hit after hit on YouTube?
It really was a great feeling to see that more and more people seemed to like my music and my voice. I have always been singing, but never really sang in front of other people. So one day I decided to post a video of me singing on YouTube, and after just one week I had over 1,000 views. People wanted to hear more, so from that point, I kept posting videos. My first goal always was to get 10, 000 views on one video. When I got there my next goal were 100,000 views and then 1 million hits. And I did it! It was also truly a wonderful feeling to see that the number of subscribers was increasing each day.

Now that you’ve been signed, where do you see your career going from here?
There are still lots of things to work on to really make it big. We’re working on an album that will be released by middle of March this year and I really hope that my fans will like it. It’s hard to say where my career might be going from here, but I hope that I can impress more and more people during the next two years and one day play in front of a crowd of thousands. I’d like to play in one of the big festivals. Definitely some pretty exciting years ahead, but where it finally takes me, who knows?

What qualities do you look for in a girl?
Honesty, loyalty, intelligence, good sense of humor, and I really like natural girls!

Where would you take a girl on a first date?
I’d take her to the beach right before sunset, pack a picnic, and maybe bring my guitar.

Yeah, I have!

What’s your most embarrassing moment?
I was on stage ready to perform my third song. I started with the intro and suddenly the guitar strap broke! Fortunately I could catch the guitar so it didn’t fall to the ground, but it was still pretty awkward.

What do you like to do in your spare time?
Even though it’s my spare time, I still like to sing and play instruments. Other than that, I like to do sports (soccer, volleyball, jogging, work out), meet friends and listen to music.

What’s one of your biggest pet peeves?
I guess people who blame anything but themselves for their failure.

Why He Rocks: Ricardo is sweeping girls off their feet all over the world. One of his videos on YouTube has over three million views and the count is going up on a daily basis. (Though that might be solely because of me…) Oh, and he has an accent. Need I say more?

What age did you start singing?
I was around 17-18 when I started singing.

Have you always dreamed of turning your talent into a career, or was it something that just happened?
I’ve been playing the piano since I was around ten years old. I started singing for fun and without any big dreams. It wasn’t until I put my music online and received so much great feedback that it first came to me that maybe I should try to become a singer. Now I can’t imagine a life without music.

Where’s your favorite place to write lyrics and sing?
In the car and in my home studio all alone. But I also love working with other songwriters and musicians. That way I find new ways of doing things.

Who or what has inspired you to continue with your passion for music?
I think all the great artists and songs in the world have inspired me. I never was quite sure about what to do with my life. When I started to make my own songs and learned how to sing it all just made sense.  I never feel as happy and in my element as when I’m writing, recording, or performing, so my passion for the music keeps me going. Alright, being signed to Universal Music helps, too!

What’s your favorite experience with your fans?
I love getting those special messages from fans like ‘every night I put my baby to sleep with your songs, she loves it’. This could be insulting (are my songs that boring?)…but yeah, I think it’s really sweet!  I love hearing that my music/voice helps them through a rough time or puts a smile on their faces.

What catches your eye most when first meeting a girl?
Her eyes and her smile! I think her voice and sense of humor are important, too.

What’s your ideal first date?
On my ideal first date she asks for a second date! Okay, well, the first date should feel like ‘wow’… then it really doesn’t matter where you are or what you’re doing together.

What’s the most romantic thing you’ve ever done for a girl?
I took the bus for about 30 hours to surprise her for her birthday. She didn’t know about it but was happy to see me. Is that romantic? I don’t know… 

What’s your biggest pet peeve?
Liars… and when someone doesn’t believe me or judges too soon even if my hands are clean!  Where’s the justice in that?!

What’s one thing you can’t go a day without doing?
Music– I’m really a workaholic when it comes to music. It’s something I can’t switch off… Like right now, I’m working on my single ‘Just One Day’ and because it will be released soon there is just so much going on in my head about song production, live band, video clip, promotion, and so on. Love it!

What’s your favorite food?
Chinese food and shrimp.

Who the F is Ke$ha??

The girl wears glitter. A lot of it.
She totally ripped off my girl Uffie.
She has a dollar sign IN HER NAME.
She has one song out…and it’s about getting wasted.

But girlfriend is everywhere. She’s all over the internet, the radio plays her song religiously and she’s even found a spot on my workout playlist. And my getting ready to go out playlist. And my walk to class playlist…

Now, I know the stars of pop music have been a little ridiculous lately (Exhibit A), but this new-found obsession with Ke$ha has me a little worried; bad romance outfits are one thing, but brushing your teeth with a bottle of Jack? Come on now, girl.

I mean – really, Kesha? – you “wake up in the morning feeling like P. Diddy”? What does it feel like to be an angry, controlling, egotistical rap mogul with a Twitter obsession?

And really, it’s great that you have set such lofty goals for yourself (“Tonight, I’ma fight until we see the sunlight”), but shouldn’t you be thinking about a few more serious things like, I don’t know… getting a job? Or giving back to the poor? Or getting proper dental care? I know that you  “Aint got a care in the world, but [you] got plenty of beer,” and that’s great; we all need a night off to just let loose. I feel ya, sister. But I really worry about the mental health of anyone who wants a dude that “look[s] like Mick Jagger.”

Is this the kind of person we want millions of little girls to look up to?

And why you gotta make your song so catchy, Ke$ha? Do you know how much I hate myself when I’m jumping around the bar and know every single (terrible) verse? I want to hate you – I really, really do – but hard as I try, I just can’t get enough. And that might be the worst thing of all.

Damn you, Ke$ha. Damn you.

And then I realized: here was a girl that has zero (zilch, nada, NOTHING) talent getting the opportunity of a lifetime while there are so many real singers out there that the world is truly missing out on.

Singers like Jesse Palter, one of the best new artists I’ve heard in a long-ass time. Jesse, who is well known and celebrated for her abilities as a Jazz singer, has a rare voice and a distinct sound that you can’t help but fall in love with. Her latest music (which I just downloaded from iTunes and is already on my most played list….) makes you feel good. Feel happy. Feel like dancing around in your undies (even with the drapes open!). And on top of all that, this girl is a major sweetheart. I’m not sure what I love more – the girl or the music – but either way you should get to know Ms. Jesse Palter:

1. What is the most trouble you’ve ever gotten into?
Trouble? Who, me? I’ve never gotten into any trouble! Except for the time I dyed my hair blonde and left my eyebrows dark brown… Does that count? That was TROUBLING!

In the bar: “Man In The Mirror” or “Living On A Prayer” – Afterall, I am a child of the 80s
In the car: “You’re So Vain” (Carly Simon), “Different Drum” (Linda Ronstadt), “Come Together” The Beatles, “You Oughta Know” (Alanis Morissette)…and a lot of Motown.
Karaoke: **gasp** Uhhhh…I hate singing karaoke. I feel more comfortable performing in front of large crowds with a live band than singing karaoke. True story! I get sweaty palms and clamped hands and everything! But, I do get a kick out of watching other people sing Bohemian Rhapsody karaoke style.

5. Ten years from now you will be….
Doing exactly what I’m doing now, only BIGGER! I see myself traveling the world and spreading a positive message with my music. I see myself having collaborated with other artists that I admire and am inspired by. I see myself writing for/producing/mentoring up-and-coming talent. I see myself having opportunities to be philanthropic as a result of my hard work. And…I see myself ten years older.

3. If you could go open up for any artist on tour right now who would it be?
Well, the Jonas brothers called me and said, “Yoooo Jesse P! Can you come on the road with us? This tour is Burnin’ Up!!!” And although the proposal was quite intriguing, I ultimately said, “Sorry Jo Bro’s! I’m waiting for Elton John & Billy Joel’s call”… or Coldplay. They’re incredible musicians and great songwriters. Really, though, we would bring the heat to any opening slot! We’re saddled up and ready to rock.

4. So, what’s your favorite thing to do when you aren’t writing/producing/playing etc? Do you like Jenga? I loooove Jenga.
Anything active or outdoorsy! Running, hiking, biking, yoga-ing, dancing – summers in Chicago are great because the weather is often conducive for walking. I like to go to new parts of the city that I’ve never been and discover new restaurants, shops and people watch! If I can actively explore, I’m there!

5. You write all of your own music; where do you draw inspiration from when you write songs and what’s your favorite part about the proccess?
Anything and everything. My life. My friends’ lives. The person I overhear at a coffee shop’s life. Pop culture. Historic culture. Evolution. Colors. Love. Hate. Insecurities. Opportunities. The unknown. Nature. When I’m processing my emotions I ask myself “what melody would this be?” and I’ll try and put my feelings to song. Sometimes a catchphrase pops out and then I’ll marinate on that and write a melody and harmony to it. Sometimes a series of chord changes play over in my head and won’t quit until I write it. Sometimes I wake up or am woken up humming a melody. It’s really an organic process. The idea manifests randomly and spontaneously and I know that I have to go with it or I’ll lose it.

Dear (See Below) Bands,

I love your music. Love, love, love. But can you maybe try to be a little less annoying? It makes it so hard to defend you when I tell my friends about my favorite artists. Actually, it makes it hard to admit to anyone that you happen to be one of them.  And I want to make them like you, really, I do. But like that friend who has a minor character flaw that now pisses you off enough that you really can’t see the good in her anymore,  I’m finding it difficult to enjoy your music knowing how annoying you are.

Here are some heart-to-heart tips from your loving (secret) admirer to be a little less annoying and a little more rock and roll.

Fall Out Boy

You always have a spot in my 6-CD player in my car. Sugar, you’ll never go down on the playlist for me if you continue to make some of the sweetest pop punk music out there. But please, Pete Wentz, I’m begging you – cut your hair, lay off the eyeliner and put on a damn shirt when you are on a magazine cover. You need to settle down – you play bass. And, um, you have a kid?

Also, Patrick, can you please enunciate your song lyrics so I can actually sing along and not just randomly open my mouth while humming the tune to look like I know what I’m singing? And what’s up with the weird syntax and bizzare punctuation in the song titles? Thnks Fr Th Confusn. I mean, e.e. Cummings was a legit poet, while you’re just… an antithesis of all semblance of reason. And grammar. My English teacher highly disapproves.

Avril Lavigne

“I’m with you” on how most of your songs are about girl problems to which every teenager can relate. And I love how you have other gigs too, like co-writing “Breakaway” for Kelly Clarkson and even recording The Spongebob Squarepants Movie theme song (my little bro totally agrees).  But I’m pretty sure that hot pink hair, combat boots, and thick-enough eyeliner to paint a mural were out of fashion like 10 years ago. You remind me of the wanna-be punk-rocker chicks at my old high school who stood in their corner by the snack machine and talked about how “complicated” their life was and how their parents didn’t understand them. You’re married now, for goodness sakes, so do your husband a favor and stop wearing pink angel wings and acting like a “sk8er boi.” Oh, and learn how to play the guitar for real. You’re kinda getting “under my skin.”

Coldplay

The first time I heard “Clocks,” it changed my life. And continued to do so for the 100 times I listened to it on repeat afterward. You should even see my wall – there’s a giant banner that shouts, “viva la vida,” my adopted mantra para mi vida. But enough with the same gloomy, sad looks while you play haunting, heart-wrenching melodies on the piano, Chris Martin. I’m wondering if you’re able to play some different chord progressions as well, since you only seem to stick to one particular one on every. single. bloody. song. Can we maybe change it up a bit, with chords and tempos and basically not have the same harmonic patterns last throughout the whole album? Or four? Keep the accent though, please. Oh, and tell Gwyneth to lose the GOOP.

Simple Plan

My friend saw you in concert in Japan, and just like her, I must say: I’m “addicted” to your music. In a “perfect world,” I would hang out with you guys all day and do crazy stuff like dye the neighbor’s pool yellow or something, because, let’s face it, “I’m just a kid.” You seem like a bunch of cool, fun kids just making music because you can, and I love that about you. But unfortunately, you kinda remind me of blink182. But not in a middle-school-memories, emo-phase, dress-like-a-punk, nostalgic sort of way. More like a trying-a-little-too-hard, bad-album-titles, life-is-so-unfair-let’s-cry-about-it sort of way. Skateboarding is a sport, not a prop, and yelling at your parents on a rooftop in the pouring rain? Effective, but kinda cheesy I must say. Maybe there’s a reason you’re “still not getting any”…

My guilty pleasure of all things guilt-full and pleasurable is “See You Again.” It’s on my workout playlist, my clubbing/dance-party playlist, and my blasting-in-the-car playlist. To the point where I’m headbanging and screaming out the lyrics with my girlfriends, and looking like a mad woman to the car next to us. But oh mah gah. There is so much advice and wisdom I wish to impart upon you that’s long enough to last a whole Oprah episode. You’re obviously not as big as a band, but your ego is big enough compete with one. Can you please act your age and stop dating older men that are probably not into you and more into your…assets? And stop taking those trashy MySpace pictures that even my 12 year old cousin knows not to take? You’re probably one of the reasons sexting is such a problem these days among teens. Or maybe just why television shows are going down the drain. Whatever happened to old Disney classics like Even Stevens and Sister, Sister? Dump the TV show and the drama queen act and just behave more like the role model you’re supposed to be for young girls. Then I won’t be so embarrassed when someone sees you on (every single one of) my iPod playlists.

Hair Salon: Fact is our boys need hair cuts too…. Meeting one while your hair is wrapped in foils that make you look like you are channeling outer space? Always Special. But if you are confident to talk to him looking like that, chances are he is going to appreciate the gesture and ask you out.

New Kids on the Block (or other pop-star) Concert: Sure you are chomping at the bit to get your hands on tickets to see your heart throbs back in concert- but while you were 7 screaming about the Right Stuff, our male counterparts were playing with Ninja Turtles and GI Joe’s. But you never know; there are always the guys who are forced to go for work or who work for the band… or who are IN the band.

Yoga Class: There is nothing like being in a Downward Dog peering at a HOT guy with no shirt on from between your legs. Just what you needed to get you through your workout (and coming back all week). Now you get to stare at his ass all class long. I will Namaste to that. Best. Day. Ever.
